Problems of DPA cross-sections above 20 MeV in FENDL-3.1d found in A-FNS neutronics analysis

We found out that there was a questionable iron DPA value just above 20 MeV neutron energy in neutronics analyses of A-FNS using FENDL-3.1d. Our detailed investigation on the iron data in FENDL-3.1d figured out that residual nucleus production yield data of $$^{56}$$Fe just above 20 MeV had a problem, which caused a sharp spike just above 20 MeV in the DPA cross section of $$^{56}$$Fe. Thus we modified the yield data of $$^{56}$$Fe and verified that the questionable DPA value disappeared using the modified data. We also examined DPA cross sections of other nuclei in FENDL-3.1d. It was found out that DPA cross sections of more than 70% of nuclei in FENDL-3.1d have similar problems as that of $$^{56}$$Fe.

We performed a TENDL-2017 benchmark test with iron shielding experiments by using 40 and 65 MeV neutrons, in order to verify a nuclear data library above 20 MeV for neutronics analyses of A-FNS. We found out that the calculated neutron spectra with TENDL-2017 unnaturally increased near 30 MeV. We figured out that incorrect secondary neutron spectrum data in $$^{54}$$Fe, $$^{56}$$Fe and $$^{58}$$Fe at 30 MeV caused the increase of the neutron flux. Similar problems occurred in a lot of nuclei of TENDL-2017, TENDL-2015 and FENDL-3.1d from TENDL-2010 and TENDL-2011.

IFMIF is an accelerator based neutron facility having two set of linear accelerators each producing 125mA/CW deuterium ion beams (250mA in total) at 40MeV. The LIPAc (Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator) being developed in the IFMIF-EVEDA project consists of an injector, a RFQ accelerator, and a part of superconducting Linac, whose target is to demonstrate 125mA/CW deuterium ion beam acceleration up to 9MeV. The injector has been developed in CEA Saclay and already demonstrated 140mA/100keV deuterium beam. The injector was disassembled and delivered to the International Fusion Energy Research Center (IFERC) in Rokkasho, Japan, and the commissioning has started after its reassembly 2014; the first beam production has been achieved in November 2014. Up to now, 100keV/120mA/CW hydrogen ion beam has been produced with a low beam emittance of 0.2 $$pi$$.mm.mrad (rms, normalized).

Development of the prototype accelerator (LIPAc) for the engineering validation of the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) which is an accelerator driven neutron source has been progressed at Rokkasho. The LIPAc is a deuteron linear accelerator consisting of an injector, a radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) linac and a superconducting linac. The objective of LIPAc is to produce a CW beam with the energy and current of 9 MeV and 125 mA, respectively. The injector was developed at CEA/Saclay and succeeded to produce CW proton and deuteron beams of 100 keV/140 mA by autumn 2012. After the test at CEA/Saclay, the injector was shipped to the International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) in Rokkasho, Aomori and started to reassemble from the end of 2013. It was successfully produced proton beams in November 2014 at Rokkasho. While the ion source conditioning was done, the beam test was progressed. In this paper, the present status of the LIPAc injector at Rokkasho with some experimental results will be presented.

High-power tests of RF input coupler for the IFMIF/EVEDA RFQ prototype linac

For the IFMIF/EVEDA accelerator prototype RFQ linac, the operation frequency of 175MHz was selected to accelerate a large current of 125mA. The driving RF power of 1.28MW by 8 RF input couplers has to be injected to the RFQ cavity for CW operation mode. For each RF input coupler, nominal RF power of 160kW and maximum transmitted RF power of 200kW are required. For this purpose, an RF input coupler with cooling functions was designed, based on a 6 1/8 inch co-axial waveguide, and the RF coupler was manufactured by way of trial. For the trial RF coupler, high-power tests using a high voltage standing wave on a high-Q load circuit wave were carried out, and a 200kW-14 sec CW operation were performed after four days of RF aging. No RF contact defects, unnecessary low-Q value and extraordinary outgassing were observed. This report describes the high-power tests of the RF input coupler.

Progress of the high current Prototype Accelerator for IFMIF/EVEDA

Under the framework of Broader Approach (BA) agreement between Japan and Euratom, IFMIF/EVEDA project was launched in 2007 to validate the key technologies to realize IFMIF. The most crucial technology to realize IFMIF is two set of linear accelerator each producing 125mA/CW deuterium ion beams up to 40MeV. The prototype accelerator, whose target is 125mA/CW deuterium ion beam acceleration up to 9MeV, is being developed in International Fusion Research Energy Center (IFERC) in Rokkasho, Japan. The injector developed in CEA Saclay was delivered in Rokkasho in 2014, and is under commissioning. Up to now, 100keV/120mA/CW hydrogen ion beams and 100keV/90mA/CW duty deuterium ion beams are successfully produced with a low beam emittance of 0.21 $$pi$$.mm.mrad (rms, normalized). Delivery of RFQ components will start in 2015, followed by the installation of RF power supplies in 2015.

The prototype accelerator is being developed as an engineering validation for the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) equipped with an accelerator-driven-type neutron source for developing fusion reactor materials. This prototype accelerator is a deuteron linear accelerator consisting of an injector, an RFQ, a superconducting linac and their auxiliaries. It aims to produce a CW D$$^+$$ beam with the energy and current of 9 MeV/125 mA. The injector test was completed at CEA/Saclay in 2012 for producing a CW H$$^+$$ beam and a CW D$$^+$$ beam with the energy and current of 100 keV/140 mA. After the beam test at CEA/Saclay, the injector was transported to the International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) located in Rokkasho, Aomori, Japan. In the end of 2013, installation of the injector was started at IFERC for the injector beam test beginning from summer 2014 in order to obtain better beam qualities to be satisfied with the injection and acceleration of the following accelerators. In this paper, some results of the injector beam test performed at CEA/Saclay and the status quo of the installation of the injector at IFERC are presented.

Influence of Great East Japan Earthquake on neutron source station in J-PARC

This report investigates the behavior, damage and restoration of a neutron source station of the MLF at the Great East Japan Earthquake and verified the safety design for emergency accidents in the neutron source station. In the MLF, after an occurrence of the Earthquake, strong quakes were detected at the instruments, the external power supply was lost, all of the circulators shut down automatically, and the hydrogen gas was released. The leakages of mercury, hydrogen and radio-activation gases did not occur. While, the quakes made gaps between the shield blocks and ruptured external pipe lines by subsidence around the building. But significant damages to the components were not found though the pressure drop of compressed air lines influenced on a target trolley lock system and so on. These results substantiated the validity of the safety design for emergency accidents in the source station, and suggested several points of improvement.

Influence of Great East Japan Earthquake on neutron target station in J-PARC

This report investigates behaviors and damages of each component in a neutron target station of the MLF at the J-PARC at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE). At the date of the GEJE, in the MLF, strong quakes were detected at several instruments, an external power supply were lost, all of the circulation systems were shut down automatically, and a hydrogen gas was released as planned. Leakage of activation liquids and gases did not occur. While, the quakes made gaps between shield blocks and ruptured external pipe lines for air and water by subsidence. But significant damages on the components of the target station were not found though a loss of compressed air supply affected lock systems with air cylinders and pneumatic operation values. These results substantiated a validity of safety design on the target station for emergency accidents.

A new gyrotron operation technique to increase oscillation efficiency was developed on the JT 60 ECRF system. The electron pitch factor was optimized by controlling anode voltage within 0.1 s after the start of the operation. By applying this technique, the gyrotron output power of 1.5 MW for 4 s was recorded, for the first time. The reduced collector heat load at 1.5 MW operations was reduced by 20% and it will be acceptable for longer pulse operation. A new gyrotron with an improved mode converter was developed in order to demonstrate reduction of the stray radiation which had limited the pulse length. The stray radiation was reduced to 1/3 of that of the original gyrotron. A conditioning operation of the improved gyrotron is proceeding up to 31 s at 1 MW. These progresses significantly contribute to enhancing the high power and long pulse capability of the ECRF system toward JT 60SA.
