Radon inhalation activates antioxidative functions in mouse organs, thereby contributing to inhibition of oxidative stress-induced damage. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the redox state of various organs in mice following radon inhalation. Mice inhaled radon at concentrations of 2 or 20 kBq/m$$^{3}$$ for 1, 3, or 10 days. The relationship between antioxidative function and oxidative stress was evaluated by principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation coefficient compared with control mice subjected to sham inhalation. These findings suggested that radon inhalation altered the redox state in organs, but that the characteristics varied depending on the redox state in organs.

A Set of ORIGEN2 cross section libraries based on JENDL-3.3 library; ORLIBJ33

A set of cross section libraries for ORIGEN2 code, ORLIBJ33, has been produced based on the latest Japanese Evaluated Nuclear Data Library JENDL-3.3. The produced libraries are for LWR's which include PWR, BWR and their MOX fuels. The libraries for FBR's are also produced. Using the libraries for LWR, comparisons with old libraries based on JENDL-3.2 were performed. The comparisons with measured PIE data were also carried out. For the libraries for FBR, the comparisons with the calculations using the old libraries were performed and the effects using different libraries were discussed.

Measurements on the release ratios of aerial radioactive materials from mocked fuel reprocessing liquid waste under its boiling to dryness process were performed using labo-scaled experiments. Test sample, dissolved 27 elements into nitric acid and arranged to 2M acidity, was heated up to 300 $$^{circ}$$C under the constant air ventilation. Steam, gaseous and airborne materials were collected or absorbed at the condenser, the air filter and the washing bottles. The accumulated release ratios of mocked FP elements from samples were determined using ICP-MS. From the accumulated release ratios determined from the condensed samples, the major release of Cs and Ru could be involved the release of mist and gaseous RuO$$_{4}$$, respectively. Besides, accumulated release ratios of Ru was about 10 to 1000 times higher than Cs, differed from the literature using fuel reprocessing liquid waste. Its differences could be influenced the nitrous acid, which was reduced the generation of RuO$$_{4}$$.

The release behavior of radioactive materials from high-level radioactive liquid wastes (HLW) from reprocessing plants under an accidents of boiling to dryness of HLW condition has been studied. The influences of FP concentration in the simulated HLW on the release ratio of FP from the waste were measured in the laboratory-scaled experiments using non-radioactive simulated HLW which was prepared by dissolving 27 FP elements into nitric acid and adjusted to 2 M acidity. The simulated HLW was heated up to 300$$^{circ}$$C under the constant air ventilation condition. The accumulated release ratios of FP elements from samples were determined using ICP-MS analysis. It was found that the accumulated release ratio of Ru was decreased with the increase of the initial Ru concentration in the simulated HLW. However, those of Cs and Nd were not influenced by the initial concentrations of them.

We have reported that radon inhalation activates antioxidative functions in mouse organs. These activation inhibits reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced oxidative stresses. Activation of antioxidative functions induced by radon inhalation probably due to the production of a small quantity of ROS. However, there were no reports on this mechanism. In this study, we evaluated hydrogen peroxide induced oxidative stress by radon inhalation in mouse organs. That is, mice inhaled radon at a concentration of 1 kBq/m$$^{3}$$ or 10 kBq/m$$^{3}$$ for 24 hours. Results showed that radon inhalation increased hydrogen peroxide in liver and lung by 20%. On the other hand, hydrogen peroxide in heart decreased by 20%. This is probably due to total glutathione reacts with hydrogen peroxide. These findings suggest that radon inhalation produces a small quantity of hydrogen peroxide, which is ROS, in mouse organs. However, antioxidative related substances, which are catalase and total glutathione, play an important role to reduce oxidative stress.
