A novel removal technique with ultrafine bubbles has been proposed for decommissioning of nuclear facilities. The performance of removal technology with ultrafine bubbles was evaluated in the removal experiments with non-radioactive materials, simulated contaminants precipitated Co oxides. To investigate the influence of difference in the chemical forms, the decontamination experiments were carried out with the fuel pin end plugs contaminated radioactive materials in a hot cell.

First direct mass measurements of nuclides around $$Z$$ = 100 with a multireflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph

Masses of $$^{246}$$Es, $$^{251}$$Fm and the transfermium nuclei $$^{249-252}$$Md, and $$^{254}$$No, produced by hot- and cold-fusion reactions, in the vicinity of the deformed $$N=152$$ neutron shell closure, have been directly measured using a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph. The masses of $$^{246}$$Es and $$^{249,250,252}$$Md were measured for the first time. Using the masses of $$^{249,250}$$Md as anchor points for $$alpha$$ decay chains, the masses of heavier nuclei, up to $$^{261}$$Bh and $$^{266}$$Mt, were determined. These new masses were compared with theoretical global mass models and demonstrated to be in good agreement with macroscopic-microscopic models in this region. The empirical shell gap parameter $$delta_{2n}$$ derived from three isotopic masses was updated with the new masses and corroborate the existence of the deformed $$N=152$$ neutron shell closure for Md and Lr.

Various isotopes of Ac, Ra, Fr, and Rn were produced by fusion-evaporation reactions using a $$^{48}$$Ca beam. The energetic ions were stopped in and extracted from a helium gas cell. The extracted ions were identified using a multi-reflection time-of-fight mass spectrograph. In all cases, it was observed that the predominant charge state for the extracted ions, including the alkali Fr, was 2+.

Using a multireflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph located after a gas cell coupled with the gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS-II, the masses of several $$alpha$$-decaying heavy nuclei were directly and precisely measured. The nuclei were produced via fusion-evaporation reactions and separated from projectilelike and targetlike particles using GARIS-II before being stopped in a helium-filled gas cell. Time-of-flight spectra for three isobar chains, $$^{204}$$Fr-$$^{204}$$Rn-$$^{204}$$At-$$^{204}$$Po, $$^{205}$$Fr- $$^{205}$$Rn-$$^{205}$$At-$$^{205}$$Po-$$^{205}$$Bi, and $$^{206}$$Fr-$$^{206}$$Rn-$$^{206}$$At, were observed. Precision atomic mass values were determined for $$^{204-206}$$Fr, $$^{204,205}$$Rn, and $$^{204,205}$$At. Identifications of $$^{205}$$Bi, $$^{204,205}$$Po, $$^{206}$$Rn, and $$^{206}$$At were made with N$$leq$$10 detected ions, representing the next step toward use of mass spectrometry to identify exceedingly low-yield species such as superheavy element ions.

In this study, hydrogeological modeling and groundwater flow simulations have been carried out in order to construct site descriptive model using data of hydraulic responses and groundwater chemistry changes until 460 m depth of MIU excavation. As a result of this study, the effect of hydraulic conductivity and flow porosity of hydrogeological structure to hydraulic and geochemical impacts due to the MIU excavation were confirmed. In addition, trend of inflow rate into the MIU facilities and hydraulic and geochemical impacts around the MIU Construction Site caused by the MIU construction could be reproduced.

The bow wave induced mechanism of high-order harmonics generation was discovered using simulations and catastrophe theory. This mechanism feasibility was successfully demonstrated in 3D and 2D PIC simulations. The mechanism and the simulations explained high-order harmonics in the XUV spectral region seen in recent experiments with terawatt lasers. Development of new XUV light and X-ray source based on the high-order harmonics generation mechanism is proposed.

A proton beam driven by a repetitive high-intensity-laser is utilized to induce a $$^{7}$$Li(p,n)$$^{7}$$Be nuclear reaction. The total activity of $$^{7}$$Be are evaluated by two different methods. The activity obtained measuring the decay $$gamma$$-rays after 1912 shots at 1 Hz is 1.7$$pm$$0.2 Bq. This is in good agreement with 1.6$$pm$$0.3 Bq evaluated from the proton energy distribution measured using a time-of-flight detector and the nuclear reaction cross-sections. We conclude that the production of activity can be monitored in real time using the time-of-flight-detector placed inside a diverging proton beam coupled with a high-speed signal processing system.

We demonstrate a new high-order harmonic generation mechanism reaching the "water window" spectral region in experiments with multi-terawatt femtosecond lasers irradiating gas jets. A few hundred harmonic orders are resolved, giving $$mu$$J/sr pulses. Harmonics are collectively emitted by an oscillating electron spike formed at the joint of the boundaries of a cavity and bow wave created by a relativistically self-focusing laser in underdense plasma. The spike sharpness and stability are explained by catastrophe theory. The mechanism is corroborated by particle-in-cell simulations.

We demonstrate a compact, high-spatiotemporal-quality, high-intensity diode-pumped Yb:YAG thin-disk chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) laser system that incorporates a nonlinear preamplifier based on optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA). The stretched pulses are amplified in the OPCPA preamplifier and the following Yb:YAG main amplifier to $$sim$$100 mJ at 10 Hz. The broadband amplified beam quality of 1.1 (horizontal direction) and 1.4 (vertical direction) times diffraction limited and pulse compression down to 470 fs with contrast of better than 10$$^{-8}$$ have been achieved successfully.

This paper reviews the temporal contrast and spatial beam quality improvement techniques in a high intensity Ti:sapphire laser system that is based on chirped-pulse amplification (CPA). We describe a low gain optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) preamplifier that uses high energy, clean pulse seeding and is shown to significantly improve the contrast to better than 10$$^{-10}$$-10$$^{-11}$$ relative to the peak of the main femtosecond pulse. We also report the use of a diffractive optical element for beam homogenization of a 100 J level Nd:glass green pump laser, achieving a flat-topped spatial profile with a filling factor near 80 %.

International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) is an accelerator-based neutron irradiation facility dedicated for development of fusion materials. Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities (EVEDA) phase of IFMIF project has been initiated in June 2007 and a prototype of the IFMIF accelerator (40 MeV - 125 mA CW Deuteron) is under construction in Rokkasho, Aomori. The target of the prototype is 9 MeV - 125 mA CW beam operation, which is full scale prototyping up to the first tank of superconducting linac section. In this report, the major technical specifications and issues of this extremely high-power machine are overviewed and expected results through operation in future are summarized.

High temporal and spatial quality petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser system

OPCPA (Optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification) operation with low gain by seeding with high energy, clean pulses is shown to significantly improve the contrast to better than $$10^{-10}$$-$$10^{-11}$$ in a high intensity Ti:sapphire laser system that is based on chirped pulse amplification. In addition to the high contrast broadband high energy output from the final amplifier is achieved with a flat-topped spatial profile of filling factor near 77%. This is the result of pump beam spatial profile homogenization with diffractive optical elements. Final pulse energies exceed 30-Joules indicating capability for reaching peak powers in excess of 500-TW.

High spatiotemporal-quality petawatt-class laser system

We have developed a femtosecond high intensity laser system, which combines both Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) and optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) techniques, that produces more than 30-J broadband output energy, indicating the potential for achieving peak powers in excess of 500-TW. With a cleaned high-energy seeded OPCPA preamplifier as a front-end in the system, for the compressed pulse without pumping the final amplifier we found that the temporal contrast in this system exceeds 10$$^{10}$$ on the sub-nanosecond timescales, and is near 10$$^{12}$$ on the nanosecond timescale prior to the peak of the main femtosecond pulse. Using diffractive optical elements for beam homogenization of 100-J level high-energy Nd:glass green pump laser in a Ti:sapphire final amplifier, we have successfully generated broadband high-energy output with a near-perfect top-hat-like intensity distribution.

Nonlinear interaction of intense laser beams with plasma causes a number of different regimes of generation of high energy particle beams and of strong radiation with the emitted photon energy from the X-ray to THz frequency range. The review of the first proof-of-principle experiment and the latest progress on the flying mirror is presented. A low frequency EM radiation emission has also been observed in our experiments. The interpretation invokes the relativistic electromagnetic solitons. The solitons are formed in an underdense plasma in the process of the laser pulse frequency downshift. They store a portion of EM wave energy with the polarization inherited from the laser and emit it at the plasma-vacuum interface in a form of the low frequency EM bursts. We present the results of the polarization-resolved measurements.
