JAEA-Research-2010-066.pdf:2.26MB

In the safety assessment for a geological disposal of radioactive waste, it is important to establish modelling methods and validation methods for regional groundwater flow system in the depth of 300$$sim$$1000m to estimate radionuclide migration to human environment through groundwater flow system. The study discussed application of data and assessment methods for model validation based on multiple indicators such as hydrology, groundwater chemistry, temperature and age of groundwater in case of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture where a lot of in-situ data about groundwater was measured. This results show that existing hydrochemical and thermal data are applicable to explain freshwater and saltwater distribution and groundwater flow pattern in case of regional scale. It also indicates that gravitational groundwater is likely to flow into the deep part of fresh-saltwater interface based on the exist of Na-HCO$$_{3}$$ type water above fresh-saltwater interface mixed with meteoric water and that multiple indicators are applicable to evaluate groundwater flow property and groundwater flow boundary in case of site scale region.

Oigawa, Hiroyuki; Minato, Kazuo; Morita, Yasuji; Kimura, Takaumi; Arai, Yasuo; Tsujimoto, Kazufumi; Nishihara, Kenji

Proceedings of 11th OECD/NEA Information Exchange Meeting on Actinide and Fission Product Partitioning and Transmutation (Internet), p.123 - 132, 2010/11

After the first check and review on the partitioning and transmutation (PT) technology by the Japan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) in 2000, significant progress was made in respective research areas of the partitioning, fuel fabrication, transmutation and fuel recycling in Japan. The second check and review on the PT technology was made by the JAEC in 2008-2009. The final report issued in April, 2009, mentions that the significance of the PT technology is in three points: reduction of the potential hazard, mitigation of the requirement for geological repository site, and enhancement of the options in the design of the whole system of waste disposal. The current technology levels of the PT for both FBR and ADS were evaluated. The PT technology in general is still in the basic research because of the lack of experimental data for minor actinides (MA). It was, therefore, strongly recommended to accumulate the experimental data for MA as a common basis for both FBR and ADS.

Minato, Kazuo; Morita, Yasuji; Kimura, Takaumi; Oigawa, Hiroyuki; Arai, Yasuo; Sasa, Toshinobu

Proceedings of International Conference on Advanced Nuclear Fuel Cycle; Sustainable Options & Industrial Perspectives (Global 2009) (CD-ROM), p.504 - 512, 2009/09

In JAEA, research and development (R&D) activities for partitioning and transmutation (P&T) have been promoted under the OMEGA program for 20 years. The first review of these activities was performed by the Japan Atomic Energy Commission in 2000. In accordance with the results of the review, JAEA is conducting the R&D on the P&T technology based on the "Double-strata Fuel Cycle concept" as well as that based on the commercial fast reactor cycle. The "Double-strata Fuel Cycle concept" consists of the partitioning process of the high-level waste (HLW) and the dedicated transmutation cycle using the accelerator-driven system (ADS) with the minor actinide (MA) nitride fuel. The benefit of P&T technology in terms of the waste management is also discussed. The second check and review on P&T was made in September 2008 - March 2009. The review results and recommendations for future R&D are introduced.

The concept of the rock-like oxide (ROX) fuel has been developed for the annihilation of excess plutonium in light water reactors. Irradiation tests and post-irradiation examinations were carried out on candidate ROX fuels. The ternary fuel of YSZ-spinel-corundum system, the single-phase fuels of YSZ, the particle dispersed fuels of YSZ in spinel or corundum matrix, and the blended fuels of YSZ and spinel or corundum matrix were fabricated and submitted to irradiation tests. The fuels containing spinel showed chemical instabilities with the vaporization of MgO component, which caused fuel restructuring. The swelling behavior was improved with the particle-dispersed fuels. However, the particle-dispersed fuels showed higher fractional gas release (FGR) than blended type fuels. The FGR of YSZ single-phase fuels were comparable to what would be expected for UO$$_{2}$$ fuels. The YSZ single-phase fuel showed the best irradiation performance among the ROX fuels investigated.

By combining neutron activation analysis with multiple $$gamma$$-ray detection, we have proved better sensitivity and resolution for the trace element analysis than the ordinary single $$gamma$$-ray detection method. We now try to apply the multiple $$gamma$$-ray detection method to the prompt $$gamma$$-ray analysis (PGA). We have established a new cold neutron beam line for PGA in Japan Research Reactor, JRR-3M, at Tokai establishment of Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute(JAERI). It consists of a beam shutter, a beam attenuator, a $$gamma$$-ray detector array, a sample changer, and a beam stopper. We construct a high-efficiency $$gamma$$-ray detector array specially designed for this purpose. Its performance has been evaluated with the Monte Carlo simulation code, GEANT 4.5.0.

Oigawa, Hiroyuki; Minato, Kazuo; Kimura, Takaumi; Morita, Yasuji; Arai, Yasuo; Nakayama, Shinichi; Nishihara, Kenji

Proceedings of International Conference on Nuclear Energy System for Future Generation and Global Sustainability (GLOBAL 2005) (CD-ROM), 6 Pages, 2005/10

JAERI is engaging in the R&D on the Double-strata Fuel Cycle concept in accordance with the results of the check and review on the Partitioning and Transmutation (PT) technology made by the Atomic Energy Commission of Japan in 2000. As for the partitioning process, after the establishment of the "4-group Partitioning Process Concept", an innovative concept called ARTIST is also being studied. As for the fuel technology, minor actinide nitrides such as NpN and AmN were synthesized and their material properties have been measured. To reprocess the irradiated fuel, the pyrochemical process has been studied. The R&D of the accelerator-driven transmutation system are in progress for an accelerator, lead-bismuth, and a subcritical reactor. In addition, JAERI has started the high-intensity proton accelerator project (J-PARC), which includes the Transmutation Experimental Facility (TEF) as the Phase-II. The impact of PT technology on the backend of the nuclear energy utilization is also being discussed.

JAERI-Review-2005-043.pdf:16.13MB

JAERI has been conducting research and development on partitioning and transmutation (P&T) technology for long-lived nuclides to develop the double-strata fuel cycle concept, in accordance with the Atomic Energy Commission's "Research and Development of Technologies for Partitioning and Transmutation of Long-lived Nuclides - Status and Evaluation Report" issued in 2000. The double-strata fuel cycle concept consists of four major processes: partitioning, fuel fabrication, transmutation, and fuel processing. The five-year achievement and future perspectives for the technology on these processes are presented in this report. It also provides an analytical study on impacts of introducing P&T technology on waste management, and on deployment of P&T for the future nuclear energy system.
