An Accelerator Driven System (ADS) for waste transmutation investigated in JAEA employs lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) as a neutron production target material and coolant. The neutrons are to be produced via the spallation with 1.5 GeV proton beam injection. As materials irradiation data are important for ADS development, JAEA plans to construct an irradiation facility with LBE neutron production target in J-PARC. There are many technical issues on LBE for practical use. In JAEA, various R&Ds are being carried out. Concerning corrosion study, conditioning operation and functional tests of OLLOCHI started. Oxygen concentration control technology has also developing. In the large scale LBE loop experiment, the operation for steady state and transient experiments was performed by using IMMORTAL. In the area of instrument, development of ultrasonic flow meter and freeze seal valve are progressing as a key technology for the LBE loop system. Investigation of behavior of impurities in LBE, which is important for design of the irradiation facility, started. In this paper, the status of the LBE studies and experimental plan will be presented.

In order to develop particle detectors based on SiC semiconductor, SiC pn-diodes were irradiated with microbeam of 15MeV oxygen ions. The transient current was measured using the single ion hit transient ion beam induced current (TIBIC) system at TIARA. As the results, peak intensity of transient current induded by ion irradiation increased and falltime decreased with increasing applied bias. By the integration of transient current, the charge collection was estimated. It was found that charges generated in deeper region beyond the depletion layer can be collected by the funneling effect.

In designing of the neutron scattering facility, a spent target vessel should be replaced with remote handling devices in order to protect radioactive exposure, since it would be highly. In the storage of the spent target vessel, it is necessary to consider decay heat of the target vessel and mercury contamination caused by vaporization of the residual mercury in the vessel. A conceptual design has been carried out to establish basic concept and to clarify its specification of main equipments on a handling and storage system for the spent target vessel. This report presents the basic concept and a system plot plan based on latest design works of remote handling devices, which aim at reasonability and simplification.
