High intensity laser-plasma interaction has attracted considerable interest for a number of years. The laser-plasma interaction is accompanied by generation of various charged particle beams. Results of simultaneous novel measurements of electron-induced photonuclear neutrons (photoneutron), which are a diagnostic of the laser-plasma interaction, are proposed to use for optimization of the laser-plasma ion generation. The proposed method is demonstrated by the laser irradiation with the intensity os 1$$times$$10$$^{21}$$ W/cm$$^{2}$$ on the metal foil target. The photoneutrons are measured by using NE213 liquid scintillation detectors. Heavy-ion signal is registered with the CR39 track detector simultaneously. The measured signals of the electron-induced photoneutrons are well reproduced by using the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS). The results obtained provide useful approach for analyzing the various laser based ion beams.

Single crystal for experiment using by synchrotron radiation X-ray is needed to have high quality and performance as optics element. Therefore, quantitative estimation of performance of the single crystal must be done before the experiment. Precise X-ray optics system has been developed at JAEA/Quantum Beam Science Directorate/Synchrotron Radiation Unit at SPring-8. This system can measure small sample that is less than 0.01 mm in size, and have resolving ability of sample rotation that is less than 0.01 degree. And, scanning of sample, it is possible to measure distribution of quality at sample surface. For example, single crystal of FeBO$$_{3}$$ which was measured by this system have been installed in synchrotron radiation M$"o$ssbauer spectroscopy using Doppler-shifted 14.4 keV single line $$^{57}$$Fe-M$"o$ssbauer radiation.

Synchrotron radiation M$"o$ssbauer spectroscopy was performed using a pure nuclear Bragg reflection of a $$^{57}$$FeBO$$_{3}$$ singlecrystal at the N$'e$el temperature and a Bragg reflection of an oscillating Si single crystal. The developed optical systemfor nuclear diffraction could produce a Doppler-shifted 14.4 keV single-line $$^{57}$$Fe-M$"o$ssbauer radiation and it enabled us to observe the energy-domain synchrotron radiation M$"o$ssbauer spectrum with an absorber at rest.

Stabilizing methods for vacuum exhaustion units in the optics section of the beamline have been developed on BL11XU at SPring-8. In this study, we especially focus on the vibrations from scroll pumps in the vacuum exhaustion units. Vibration frequencies are measured directly on the scroll pump under multiple conditions. The results showed that countermeasures to restrain the 30Hz vibration from scroll pumps on the beamline which was caused by working scroll pump are (1) using a damper for scroll pump, (2) pulling out the scroll pump from a vacuum unit support, and (3) settling flexible tubes and the scroll pump on the floor. These methods successfully removed the mechanical vibrations of the scroll pumps. As a result, the amplitude of 30Hz vibration on the monochromator crystals was decreased from 3.3$$times$$10-5mm to 6.2$$times$$10-6mm. The developed method in the present study on BL11XU is expected to apply to the similar vacuum units at the other beamlines.

Proceedings of Joint 20th AIRAPT - 43rd EHPRG International Conference on High Pressure Science and Technology (CD-ROM), 5 Pages, 2005/06

We were successful in synthesizing single crystals of GaN (Gallium Nitride) by slow cooling of its congruent melt under high pressure. It was confiremed by in situ X-ray diffraction that applying high pressures above 6.0 GPa completely prevented the decomposition and allowed the congruent melt of GaN at 2220$$^{circ}$$C. Using a cubic-anvil-type large volume high-pressure apparatus and GaN powder as a starting material, single crystal growth was performed by decreasing temperature from 2400$$^{circ}$$C at 6.5 GPa. The X-ray rocking curve of the recovered sample showed very narrow line-width smaller than 30 arcsec, suggesting its low dislocation density.

Multi-stabilizing methods for vibrations on the cryogenically cooled monochromator have been tried on BL11XU at SPring-8. Observed vibrations on crystals were mainly 1-10 Hz, 30 Hz, and 50 Hz. The results suggested that sources of the vibrations were liquid nitrogen flow and propagation from vibrations of vacuum pumps equipped with beam line. We took countermeasures of the vibrations to liquid nitrogen tubes, and set parameters (temperature, pressure and flow-late) of the cryogenic cooling system for 1-10 Hz vibration. Vibration absorber was set not to propagate the vibrations from the vacuum pumps and their fans for 30 and 50 Hz vibrations. These methods successfully removed the mechanical vibrations. Then, intensity vibration of X-ray was decreased from 4.47 % to 0.85 %, in the end. The stabilizing methods on BL11XU are expected to apply to the similar system at the other beam-lines.

Single crystals of GaN were successfully synthesized by slowly cooling its stoichiometric melt under high pressure. Applying high pressures above 6.0 GPa prevented decomposition and allowed the congruent melt of GaN at 2220$$^{circ}$$C, which was confirmed by an in situ X-ray diffraction study. Using a cubic-anvil-type, large volume, high-pressure apparatus and a GaN powder as a starting material, single crystal growth was achieved by reducing the temperature from 2400$$^{circ}$$C at 6.5 GPa. The X-ray rocking curve of the recovered sample showed a very narrow line width, less than 30 arcsec, suggesting a low dislocation density. Bulk specimens of Al$$_x$$Ga$$_{1-x}$$N alloys, which covered a composition range of 0$$leq$$x$$leq$$1 were also synthesized under high pressures.

Liquid-N$$_{2}$$-cooled Si crystals replaced water-cooled diamond crystals for the double-crystal monochromator on BL11XU at SPring-8. To use the whole energy from 6 keV to 70 keV, we developed the system of dual symmetric Si geometry, Si(111)/Si(311), which can be switched by a horizontal translation (X) stage perpendicular to the beam axis. The off-line experiment was performed to estimate the degree of the crystal strain, which may arise from the way of assembling in the crystal holder. With MoK$$alpha$$$$_{1}$$, rocking curves from the crystals were measured for the second crystal of the double-crystal diffractometer of parallel setting. Each of the observed full-width at half maximum (FWHM) was almost constant and identical to the calculated value wherever X-rays hit on the crystal surface. By the use of synchrotron radiation from the undulator the crystals were tested and then the characterization was performed. The observed intensities and rocking curves resulted in that each crystal was good for BL11XU and that the performance of X-ray reflection was improved.

X-ray mirror system has been installed on a JAERI beam-line, BL11XU, at SPring-8. This system has improved the quality of the reflected X-ray from the monochromator by focusing and removing of higher-order reflections. Here we presented test results of the X-ray mirror system. Reflectivity and FWHM of focusing X-ray by the mirror system are 3 times as strong as and 1/3 as narrow as unfocusing X-ray, respectively. Removal of higher-order reflections was also checked. These results showed that the mirror system on BL1XU was satisfied good performance for experimental use. And we completed a fully systematic instruction manual for operation of the X-ray mirror system on BL11XU quickly and easily. The instruction manual prevents trivial mistakes in operation of the X-ray mirror system on BL11XU and is expected to assist every mirror users on BL11XU in their works.

We developed a multi-crystal switching system on a cryogenically cooled monochromator of JAERI materials science beamline, BL11XU. In order to study our science, it is necessary for ensuring at least the energy range of 6 - 70keV to employ Si(111) and Si(311) crystals. The principle of the crystal switching is that, two pair of crystals is arranged side by side, and they are translated in horizontal direction for exchanging. Indium sheets were inserted between both sides of crystals in order to improve thermal contact. Some adjustment stages of the monochromator were removed to avoid the crystal vibration and a sheet heater was installed on an X-axis stage to prevent over-cooling of X-axis stages. The monochromator is under commissioning at present. In comparison with a previous indirect water cooling diamond (111) crystal monochromator, this monochromator provides high flux intensity from 4 times to 7 times. It takes only 5 minutes to exchange and adjust crystals geometry. This mechanism will be easily applied to other crystals, for example asymmetrical-cut crystals.

Liquid-N$$_{2}$$-cooled Si crystals replaced water-cooled diamond crystals for the double-crystal monochromator on BL11XU at SPring-8. To use the whole energy from 6keV to 70keV, we adopted the system of alternative dual symmetric Si geometry, Si(111)/Si(311), which can be switched by a horizontal translation (X) stage perpendicular to the beam axis. Before the experiment on BL11XU, the off-line evaluation was performed to estimate the degree of the crystal strain, which may arise from the way of assembling. Cryogenically cooled monochromator equipped with circulated-liquid-nitrogen cooling system has been developed on JAERI beam-line, BL11XU, at SPring-8. This cooling system has improved the performance of X-ray reflection. The system has difficulty for the operation because of a lack of the manual. So, it is required to establish a systematic guide of the system. Here we report a manual with fruitful know-how to operate the cryogenic cooling system on BL11XU safely and easily. The new manual is wholly tabulated and shows comments, instructions, and valve conditions in all one-step. The operator, by using this manual, can manipulate the system with no misoperation.

Stabilizing methods for vacuum exhaustion units in the optics section of the beamline have been developed on BL11XU at SPring-8. In this study, we especially focus on the vibrations from scroll pumps in the vacuum exhaustion units. Vibration frequencies were measured directly on the scroll pump under multiple conditions. From these measurements the following countermeasures were found to be dramatically effective for restrain on the 30Hz vibration from (1) to use a damper for scroll pump, (2) not to attach the scroll pump to a vacuum unit support but to put it on directly on the floor, and (3) to settle flexible tubes and the scroll pump on the floor. These methods successfully removed the mechanical vibrations of the scroll pumps. As a result, the amplitude of the 30Hz vibration on the monochromator crystals was decreased from 3.3$$times$$10-5mm to 6.2$$times$$10-6mm. The proposed methods in the present study on BL11XU can be applied to the similar vacuum units at the other beamlines.
