Parity violating effects enhanced by up to 10$$^6$$ times have been observed in several neutron induced compound nuclei. There is a theoretical prediction that time reversal (T) violating effects can also be enhanced in these nuclei implying that T-violation can be searched for by making very sensitive measurements. However, the enhancement factor has not yet been measured in all nuclei. The angular distribution of the (n,$$gamma$$) reaction was measured with $$^{139}$$La by using a germanium detector assembly at J-PARC, and the enhancement factor was obtained. From the result, the measurement time to achieve the most sensitive T-violation search was estimated as 1.4 days, and a 40% polarized $$^{139}$$La target and a 70% polarized $$^3$$He spin filter whose thickness is 70 atm$$cdot$$cm are needed. Therefore high quality $$^3$$He spin filter is developed in JAEA. The measurement result of the (n,$$gamma$$) reaction at J-PARC and the development status of the $$^3$$He spin filter will be presented.

On the closure of uranium mine site at Ningyo-Toge Environmental Engineering Center Japan Atomic Energy Agency, the action plans for risk communication with residence and local governments were developed and implemented. Under a practical program of the risk communication, an ethnographical research on Ningyo-Toge Environmental Engineering Center has been conducted by local high school students. The research was focused on several social groups such as engineers at the Center and residents around Ningyo-Toge and described their circumstances from the past to the present, since the discovery of the uranium outcrop 1955. In the second year of the program, the results of the research were presented at symposium and the students had opportunities to exchange their views with others from different high schools that held in similar programs. Through those activities, the importance of the program was rediscovered and some new issues were also identified.

On the closure of uranium mine site at Ningyo-Toge, the action plans for risk communication with residence and local governments were developed and implemented. Under a practical program of the risk communication, an ethnographical research on Ningyo-toge has been conducted by local high school students. The research was focused on several social groups such as engineers at the Center and residents around Ningyo-toge and described their circumstances from the past to the present. In addition, it should be noted that as a results, the research project led several effects listed below; (1) High school students understood significance of the uranium development projects implemented at Ningyo-toge, (2) Differences of standpoints between local residents and Ningyo-toge became clearer, (3) Foundation to communicate between local communities and Ningyo-toge was found out, (4) The educational program on an ethnographical research was conducted autonomously by local high school students.

Construction of a voxel phantom based on CT data for a Japanese female adult and its use for calculation of organ doses from external electrons

A voxel phantom for a Japanese female adult was developed according to CT data. The developed phantom Onago has a slightly larger size than the Asian Reference Man, Female (ARMF). The organ doses and effective doses for external electrons were calculated with the developed phantom in the energy range of 1 MeV through 10 GeV, and compared with those for a Japanese male voxel phantom Otoko and with those for a MIRD phantom. The organ doses show some typical tendencies which are common for all phantoms, but in some cases the absolute values of organ doses differ largely according to phantom. The maximum difference observed between the voxel phantoms and the MIRD-type phantom was a factor of fifty for the individual organ dose and a factor of two for the effective dose. This suggests the necessity of sophisticated phantoms and detailed investigation using the phantoms to find out the realistic reference organ doses and the fluctuations for external electron exposures.

U-Pu co-crystallization reprocessing system is proposed for LWR fuels and its flowsheet study is carried out. This reprocessing system is based on the experimental evidence indicating that hexavalent plutonium is co-crystallized with uranyl nitrate. The system consists of five steps: dissolution of spent fuel, Pu oxidation, U-Pu co-crystallization, dissolution of the crystals, and U crystallization. The system does not require organic solvent, expecting the enhancement of safety and cost-effectiveness. The system requires a recycling of the mother liquor from the U-Pu co-crystallization step to recover almost entire amount of U and Pu. The appropriate recycle ratio is determined for LWR fuels, such that the satisfactory decontamination is achieved. The mother liquor from the U re-crystallization step contains U and Pu. The flowsheet study shows that the constant ratio of Pu to U in the mother liquor can be controlled even though the composition of the spent fuel is different.

Dose calculation using Japanese voxel phantoms for diverse exposures

The voxel phantoms for Japanese male and female adults developed from CT data have been utilized for radiation protection purposes. User codes based on the EGS4 Monte Carlo program have been constructed to calculate external and internal exposures for photons and electrons. The calculated doses were compared with those using stylized MIRD type and other phantoms. The difference for external dose is not simply explained by the difference in body size, but the positions of organs were found to be an important factor to determine the doses. In internal exposure, the positional relations among organs drastically affect the specific absorption fractions, if the source and target organs are different. The simple approximation which has been used by ICRP to evaluate the dose at the boundary of two different media was found to give S values being too conservative. These calculated data shows the usefulness of realistic voxel phantoms combined with the Monte Carlo calculations.

As practical plan of the risk communication, support of local voluntary group for planning regionally activating events has been conducted. Opportunities of studying uranium mine site for regional people have implemented in events. In addition, an ethnographical research was conducted by local high school students. Research was focused on earth scientific forming process of uranium deposit.
