Hydrogen permeation fluxes of the reduced activation ferritic steel F82H were quantitatively measured by a newly proposed method, vacuum thermo-balance method, for a precise estimation of tritium leakage in a fusion reactor. We prepared sample capsules made of F82H, which enclosed hydrogen gas. The hydrogen in the capsules permeated through the capsule wall, and subsequently desorbed from the capsule surface during isothermal heating. The vacuum thermo-balance method allows simultaneous measurement of the hydrogen permeation flux by two independent methods, namely, the net weight reduction of the sample capsule and exhaust gas analysis. Thus the simultaneous measurements by two independent methods increase the reliability of the permeability measurement. The ratio of the hydrogen permeation fluxes obtained by the net weight reduction to that measured by the exhaust gas analysis was in the range from 1/4 to 1/1 in this experiment. It has been demonstrated that the vacuum thermo-balance method is effective for the measurement of hydrogen permeation rate of F82H.

The design of the breeding blanket in ITER applies pebble bed breeder in tube (BIT) surrounded by multiplier pebble bed. It is assumed to use the same module support mechanism and coolant manifolds and coolant system as the shielding blankets. This work focuses on the verification of the design of the breeding blanket, from the viewpoints which is especially unique to the pebble bed type breeding blanket, such as, tritium breeding performance, tritium inventory and release behavior and thermo-mechanical performance of the ITER breeding blanket.

Shielding blanket for ITER-FEAT applies the unique first wall structure which is separable from the shield block for the purpose of radio-active waste reduction in the maintenance work and cost reduction in fabrication process. Also, it is required to have various types of slots in both of the first wall and the shield block, to reduce the eddy current for reduction of electro-magnetic force in disruption events. This report summarizes the achievement of such R&Ds as, slit grooving techniques for Be/DSCu/SS first wall panel and SS shield block, demonstration of Be armor joining to the real scal first wall panel, and demonstration of full scale first wall panel.

Evaluation of tritium permeation in solid breeder blanket cooled by supercritical water

Kosaku, Yasuo; Yanagi, Yoshihiko*; Enoeda, Mikio; Akiba, Masato

Fusion Science and Technology, 41(3), p.958 - 961, 2002/05

As a candidate DEMO blanket, the design of solid breeder blanket cooled by supercritical water has been performed. The candidate structural material is F82H. The coolant is supercritical water (pressure; 25 MPa, temperature; 550-780K) to achieve high generation efficiency. The temperature of cooling tubes in tritium breeder zone has been evaluated at 650-800K. In this temperature range, tritium permeation must be investigated from the view point of safety management, because high temperature coolant is directly supplied to the power generation system. In the present work, the tritium permeation into the first wall cooling water by the implantation and that through cooling tubes in tritium breeder zone have been evaluated. Assuming tritium injection energy and flux are same as SSTR, the calculated value of the tritium permeation rate into the first wall cooling water is 68.3 g/day. On the other hand, that of the permeation rate through cooling tubes is 75.3 g/day (20% of generated tritium) when helium gas flows so that tritium partial pressure becomes 1 Pa at the outlet.

This report is a summary of the design works, which was discussed in the design workshop held in 2000 for the demonstration (DEMO) blanket aimed to strengthen the commercial competitiveness and technical feasibility simultaneously. The DEMO blanket must supply the feasibility and experience of the total design of the power plant and the materials. This conceptual design study was performed to determine the updated strategy and goal of the R&D of the DEMO blanket which applies the supercritical water cooling proposed in A-SSTR, taking into account the recent progress of the plasma research and reactor engineering technology.
