JAEA-Technology-2015-053.pdf:8.33MB

The superconducting Satellite Tokamak machine "JT-60SA" under construction in Naka Fusion Institute is an international collaborative project between Japan (JA) and Europe (EU). The contributions for this project are based on the supply of components, and thus European manufacturer shall conduct the installation, commissioning and tests on Naka site. This means that Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) had a quite difficult issue to manage the works by European workers and their safety although there is no direct contract. This report describes the approaches for the work and safety managements, which were agreed with EU after the tough negotiation, and then the completed on-site works for Quench Protection Circuits (QPC) as the first experience for EU in JT-60SA project. With the help of these approaches by JAEA, the EU works for QPC were successfully completed with no accident, and a great achievement was made for both EU and JA.

We report here the study of activated gold for the estimation of neutron dose in the environment in the case of JCO criticality accident happened in Tokai, Japan, in 1999. We collected and analyzed 16 gold samples, such as ring, coin or necklace stored at residents houses in the range from 168 to 568 m from the accident place of JCO. They gave activities from 91.9 to 0.322 Bq/g-Au as standardized values at 06:15, Oct. 1, 1999, when the criticality reaction had ceased after 20 hours of continuation. The induced radioactivity of gold samples showed a good correlation as a power function of distance. The induced radioactivity of gold is discussed with reference data to estimate dose equivalent in the environment around JCO. This paper gives an example showing the usefulness of gold in the field of nuclear and radiation studies and applications.

A Basic radiation-education method using a handy-type cloud chamber and natural radiation sources

Kushita, Kohei

Proceedings of 17th Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference (PBNC-17) (CD-ROM), 9 Pages, 2010/10

At NuHRDeC/JAEA, many kinds of nuclear and radiation education have been conducted through its half-century history. High level education is required for the specialists of nuclear technology including nuclear power plants operators and engineers, while basic knowledge on nuclear energy and, especially, on radiations and radioisotopes should be given to school students and public. One of the useful basic experiments is the cloud chamber experiment. Using a new-type cloud chamber developed at NuHRDeC, we have further developed a new method so that the participants can more deeply understand the phenomena and the nature of radiation and radioisotopes. In this method, using a radiation source of natural uranium ore and gaseous radiation source containing Rn-220, trainees can not only observe the radiation tracks but also measure the length and count the number of the tracks. Then they can calculate the energy of the radiation (alpha ray) and can estimate the half-life of the radioisotope (Rn-220). This method can be applied for high-school and general university students as well as for the public as a useful and effective method in the radiation education.

Comprehensive education and training activities at JAEA Nuclear Technology and Education Center

Sugimoto, Jun; Sakamoto, Ryuichi; Kushita, Kohei; Arai, Nobuyoshi; Hattori, Takamitsu; Matsuda, Kenji; Ikuta, Yuko; Sato, Koichi

Transactions of NESTet 2008 (CD-ROM), 6 Pages, 2008/05

Nuclear human resources development (HRD) in Japan has been identified as one of the most important issues these years in nuclear society, mostly due to the decrease of nuclear engineers in industries and students in universities, and to the difficulties of technical transfers. Nuclear Technology and Education Center (NuTEC) at Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) aims at comprehensive nuclear education and training activities, which cover (1) education and training for domestic nuclear engineers, (2) cooperation with universities and (3) international cooperation. The main feature of NuTEC's training programs is that the curricula places emphasis on the laboratory exercise with well-equipped training facilities and expertise of lecturers mostly from JAEA. The wide spectrum of cooperative activities have been pursued with universities, which includes newly developed remote-education system, and also with international organizations, such as with FNCA countries and IAEA.
