The oxygen vacancies at the top-surface and sub-surface could be eliminated by the supply of oxygen using an SSMB. These results indicate that the interstitial vacancies can be mostly assigned to oxygen vacancies, which can be effectively eliminated by using an oxygen SSMB. Oxygen vacancies are present on the surface of anatase TiO(001) when it is untreated before transfer to a vacuum chamber. These vacancies, which are stable in the as-grown condition, could also be effectively eliminated using the oxygen SSMB.

The cross sections of the lighter products are larger in the carbon-induced reactions due to the higher total kinetic energy of carbon. The energy dependence was investigated by comparing the newly obtained data with previous results obtained at higher reaction energies. The experimental data were compared with the results of SPACS, EPAX, PHITS and DEURACS calculations. These data serve as benchmarks for the model calculations.

We describe three specific high power laser systems that are being developed in our laboratory for many applications in high field science, nonlinear optics and material processing. We report on a femtosecond petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can produce a pulse energy of 20 J of 40 fs pulse duration, a picosecond high intensity Yb:YAG chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can generate a pulse energy of 100 mJ of 0.5 ps pulse duration, and a nanosecond high repetition rate Nd:YAG laser system that can provide an average power of 360 W with a pulse duration of 30 ns delivered at a 1 kHz repetition rate. We discuss the basic design aspects and present the results from our experimental investigations of these laser systems.

At an input laser pulse energy of 3.8 mJ from the OPCPA preamplifer the output energy of 130 mJ with spectral bandwidth of 2.5 nm has been obtained from multipass Yb:YAG ceramic thin disk amplifier, and the optical efficiency from LD energy to amplified laser pulse is 9.6%. The recompressed laser pulse duration was measured to be 450 fs. Because the compressor efficiency exceeds 73% the compressed pulse energy can potentially be as high as 95 mJ. The contrast level of this laser pulse was measured to be less than 7.210 at -150 ps. This novel laser system after further amplification using additional amplifiers can be useful for the laser-driven proton acceleration in future.

We demonstrate a compact, high-spatiotemporal-quality, high-intensity diode-pumped Yb:YAG thin-disk chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) laser system that incorporates a nonlinear preamplifier based on optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA). The stretched pulses are amplified in the OPCPA preamplifier and the following Yb:YAG main amplifier to 100 mJ at 10 Hz. The broadband amplified beam quality of 1.1 (horizontal direction) and 1.4 (vertical direction) times diffraction limited and pulse compression down to 470 fs with contrast of better than 10 have been achieved successfully.

We have demonstrated amplification of 1030 nm femtosecond laser pulses from a broadband Yb oscillator to over 6.5 mJ with a total gain of greater than 10 achieved in a single pass through only 56 mm of gain material at a 10 Hz repetition rate. The amplified spectral bandwidth of 10.8 nm affords recompression to a 230 fs pulse duration following amplification. As an alternative to the regenerative amplifier (RA) this system is one of the more promising candidates for realizing compact, high intensity, direct diode pumped, high repetition rate femtosecond Yb:YAG chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) in laser systems.

For better quantitative understanding of radionuclide migration for safety assessment of geologic disposal, JAERI has been conducting experimental and modeling studies on influences of humic substances, highly alkaline conditions and colloids on sorptive and diffusional behavior of TRU in geologic materials. In the absence of fulvic acid, one of humic substances, diffusion of Am through a tuff sample was not detected. By adding fulvic acid, Am was detected in the downstream cell, which indicates the diffusion through the sample. Highly alkaline conditions arisen from cementitious materials may spread by altering chemical and physical properties of geologic materials. Through-diffusion experiments of alkaline species in granite showed that the effective diffusion coefficient of Ca and OH in a cement-equilibrated aqueous solution were found to be higher by almost two orders of magnitude than Na and OH in a NaOH solution. Radionuclide migration can be enhanced by colloids, and thus a calculation code describing the effect of colloids on radionuclide migration has been required.

Migration experiments of Ni had been performed by a column system, to investigate migration behavior of Ni through a column packed crushed rock. The Ni concentration in the effluent passed through the column was corresponding to the fractional percentage of Ni complexing with humic substance in influent solution. This result suggests that the Ni complexing with humic substance in influent solution was flowed out from the column without any effective interactions with the rock media. The migration behavior of Ni could be expressed by a migration model taking account of the complexation kinetics of Ni with humic substance in the aqueous phase.

Migration data of Sr,Np and Pu in natural aquifer were collected by a field test, which was performed in an aquifer at 30 m under ground surface of the field test site. Migration parameters for analysis of the results obtained the field test were measured by laboratory column tests and batch tests. Diffusion coefficient corresponding to water velocity was determined from the relationship between water velocity and diffusion length, which obtained from the column tests. Distribution coefficient was determined by considering confident ability of data, test conditions, and environmental conditions. One dimensional migration behavior of the radionuclides in aquifer, calculated by using the migration parameters obtained from the batch and column tests, agreed with the results obtained from the field test. It was confirmed that the migration behavior of alpha-nuclides could be evaluated by applying the conventional equation for evaluating the radionuclide migration and the migration parameters obtained from laboratory tests.

Evaluation of radionuclide migration in geologic media is of great importance in safety assessment for shallow land disposal specially for TRU nuclides because of inadequate data based on field test. As a cooperative research between JAERI and CIRP, a field test of radionuclide migration was conducted under natural condition using Sr-90, Np-237 and Pu-238 to obtain migration data of the radionuclides in actual aerated layer under natural rainfall condition. Values of input parameters to an existing evaluation equation of nuclide migration were determined on the basis of the results of laboratory experiments of batch and column methods and field investigation. Migration distribution of the radionuclides calculated with the determined values showed reasonable agreement with the measured distribution of the field test. This confirmed an applicability of the evaluation equation for radionuclide migration to actual aerated layer under natural condition.

Adsorption mechanisms of Np and Am on the loess were examined by a chemical extraction method. In the case of the Np, most of Np adsorbed on the influent edge of the column. The Np adsorbed on the loess was mainly controlled by surface complexation. However, the migration of Np in the loess media could be roughly evaluated by using the distribution coefficient. In the case of the Am, particulate Am species was formed in the influent solution and moved in the column. The Am adsorbed on the loess was controlled by irreversible reactions. The migration behavior of particulate Am in the loess media could be expressed by the filtration theory.
