JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and post-closure performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage. With regard to (1) study on rock suitability in terms of hydrology, based on some examples of developing method of hydro-geological structure model, acquired knowledge are arranged using the tree diagram, and model uncertainty and its influence on the evaluation items were discussed. With regard to (2) study on scenario development, the developed approach for "defining conditions" has been reevaluated and improved from practical viewpoints. In addition, the uncertainty evaluation for the effect of use of cementitious material, as well as glass dissolution model, was conducted with analytical evaluation. With regard to (3) study on setting radionuclide migration parameters, based on survey of precedent procedures, multiple-approach for distribution coefficient of rocks was established, and the adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to sedimentary rock and granitic rock. Besides, an approach for solubility setting was developed including the procedure of selection of solubility limiting solid phase. The adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to key radionuclides.

Geochemical and grain-size distribution of radioactive and stable cesium in Fukushima soils; Implications for their long-term behavior

Journal of Environmental Radioactivity, 138, p.11 - 18, 2014/12

Radioactive cesium was predominantly found in the extract obtained by strong-acid dissolution and the extraction residue and was more concentrated in silt and clay grains. X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that micaceous minerals as well as kaolin minerals were predominantly dissolved by the strong-acid treatment. Correlation between the fraction of $$^{137}$$Cs and the content of micaceous minerals in different grain-size fractions of soil minerals suggests that micaceous minerals are responsible for the fixation of $$^{137}$$Cs in the soils. The isotopic ratio of $$^{137}$$Cs and $$^{133}$$Cs in the extract by strong-acid dissolution was more than three times smaller than those in the extracts by water, ion exchange, and reductive dissolution. This indicates that the distribution of $$^{137}$$Cs was not in the steady state in 2 y after the accident due to relatively slow fixation by the soil clay minerals.

Here we report the new features and improvements in our latest release of the H-Invitational Database, a comprehensive annotation resource for human genes and transcripts. H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

Laser-arc hybrid welding for the cover plate of ITER TF coil

Shiihara, Katsunori*; Makino, Yoshinobu*; Ogawa, Tsuyoshi*; Asai, Satoru*; Kanahara, Toshio*; Senda, Ikuo*; Okuno, Kiyoshi; Koizumi, Norikiyo; Matsui, Kunihiro

Proceedings of 26th International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO 2007) (CD-ROM), p.316 - 324, 2007/10

The toroidal field coil is manufactured as one of superconducting coil systems in the ITER. For welding the cover plate of TF coil, the prevention of the thermal effect on the coil and the deformation of the whole coil are required. Moreover, the application of high efficient welding is required in consideration for the productivity. Therefore, laser-arc hybrid welding process was investigated for the application to the cover plate welding, because its process is superior in the tolerance of the joint gap and the ease of the control for the heat input. In the experiment, it was confirmed that the application of laser-arc hybrid welding with the double gas shielding for high concentration arc and the filler wire for controlling the deposit amount is effective in the joint gap up to 0.8mm. Besides, twin spot laser head with the arc was developed in order to weld the both sides of cover plate simultaneously. By the optimization of welding condition for twin spot laser-arc hybrid welding process, it was confirmed to be effective in the prevention of the gap movement during welding and the acquisition of the proper penetration without the weld defect. Finally, the effectiveness of laser-arc hybrid welding for the welding deformation and the weldability on the quality was verified by the scale model test with the actual shape.

Conformational changes of troponin C within the thin filaments detected by neutron scattering

Regulation of skeletal and cardiac muscle contraction is associated with the thin filament-based proteins, troponin C (TnC), TnI, TnT, tropomyosin, and actin. Knowledge of ${it in situ}$ structures of these proteins is indispensable for elucidating the molecular mechanism of this Ca$$^{2+}$$-sensitive regulation. Here the structure of TnC within the thin filaments was investigated with neutron scattering, combined with selective deuteration and the contrast matching technique. Deuterated TnC was prepared, reconstituted into the native thin filaments, and neutron scattering patterns of these reconstituted thin filaments containing deuterated TnC were measured under the condition where non-deuterated components were rendered 'invisible' to neutrons. The obtained scattering curves arising only from deuterated TnC were analyzed by model calculations using the Monte Carlo method. The results showed that upon binding of Ca$$^{2+}$$, ${it in situ}$ radius of gyration of TnC changed from 23 AA to 24 AA , and the radial position of TnC within the thin filament changed from 53 AA to 49 AA .
