SAXS indicates the formation of ion tracks with cylindrical shape with a diameter of 5 nm. XANES indicates the cationic disordering between tetrahedral and octahedral sites by the irradiation. Quantitative analysis of XANES also reveals that cations preferably occupy the octahedral sites at high fluence.

With changes in the irradiation fluences of 200 MeV Xe ions, the Mg K-edge and Al K-edge spectra were synchronously changed. The calculated spectra based on density function theory indicate that the change in the experimental spectra was due to cationic disorder between Mg in tetrahedral sites and Al in octahedral sites. These results suggest a high inversion degree to an extent that the completely random configuration is achieved in MgAlO induced by the high density electronic excitation under swift heavy ion irradiation.

Neutron nuclear data of long lived fission products (LLFPs) have been required as basic data for the technology of reduce environmental impact involved in high level radioactive wastes (HLW). The innovative large project called by "Impusing Paradigm Change through Disruptive Technologies Program: ImPACT" have been started from October, 2014. In the ImPACT project, some research groups of JAEA engaged in the Project No.2 (Nuclear Reaction Data Measurements), and have started measurements of neutron capture cross-section at J-PARC/MLF/ANNRI. In our research, we selected cesium-135 (Cs) nuclide (half life: 2.310 yr.) among LLFPs in the HLW, and decided to measure the neutron capture cross-sections of Cs. When measurement, the Cs sample might contained cecium-137 (Cs) as impurities because it's impossible to chemically separate each other. To measure the cross-sections of Cs, there should be also needed to know the cross-sections of Cs. In this work, sample maintenance also has been examined especially for selen-79 (Se) nuclide among LLFPs having difficulty in sample preparations. In this oral session, the outline of our research project will be presented together with a research motivation, situations of past reported data, total schedules, progress, future plans, and some of high light data for neutron capture cross-section measurements.

Times Cited Count:5 Percentile:16.24(Chemistry, Multidisciplinary)Solvent extraction of uranium from a nitric acid medium was performed with ,-di(2-ethylhexyl)octanamide (DEHOA) by a single-stage batch method, and the distribution ratio equation of U(VI) was derived as = 1.1. Furthermore, the nitric acid distribution was also evaluated, and the distribution ratio equation = 0.12 was obtained. Batch experiments to evaluate the time dependence of U(VI) extraction and the U(VI) loading capacity of DEHOA were also performed. It was revealed that U(VI) extraction by DEHOA reached an equilibrium state within a few minutes, and the loading capacity was 0.71 mol/dm (M) when the concentrations of DEHOA and nitric acid were 1.5 and 3.0 M, respectively.

Extraction properties of ,-di(2-ethylhexyl)octanamide (DEHOA) toward uranium from nitric acid were studied using single-stage batch method. The results revealed that DEHOA effectively extracted uranium when the nitrate ion concentration was 2.0-3.0 mol/dm.

To understand the adsorption behaviors of ion-exchange resin bearing -trimethylglycine groups (AMP03), adsorption experiments using HNO solutions containing Ru(III), Rh(III), and Pd(II) have been performed. AMP03 strongly adsorbed Pd(II), and Ru(III) and Rh(III) were moderately adsorbed. To control the adsorption abilities of AMP03 for the Ru(III), Rh(III) and Pd(II), adsorption experiments using sample solutions with added thiourea (TU), triethylamine (TEA), and betaine anhydrous were performed. The adsorption abilities for Ru(III) and Rh(III) greatly increased with the addition of TEA, whereas the ability to adsorb Pd(II) was not significantly affected. The addition of TU or betaine anhydrous remarkably decreased the adsorption ability for Pd(II), and contrastingly slight changes in the abilities to adsorb Ru and Rh were also observed. These results show that AMP03 has a significant potential for separation of platinoid elements from HNO solution.

TEM observations under inclined conditions showed continuous ion tracks with diffraction and structure factor contrast, and the decrease in the atomic density of the ion tracks was evaluated. High resolution STEM with high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) technique showed that the crystal structure of the Ce cation column is retained at the core region of ion tracks, although the signal intensity of the Ce cation lattice is reduced over a region nm in size. Annular bright field (ABF) STEM observation has detected that the O anion column is preferentially distorted at the core region of ion tracks within a diameter of 4 nm.

Microstructural change and atomic disordering was examined through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques, with bright-field (BF) and high-resolution (HR) TEM images, and high angular resolution electron channelling X-ray spectroscopy (HARECXS), for single crystal MgAlO irradiated with 200 MeV Xe, and 340 or 350 MeV Au ions. The density of core damage region, detected by BFTEM with Fresnelcontrast, increased proportionally with ion fluence at the early stage of accumulation. This result is discussed with a balance between the formation and recovery of the core damage region under irradiation, and the influence region to induce the recovery was evaluated to be 7-9 nm in radius. The structure of the core damage region is found from HR and BFTEM images to be a columnar vacancy-rich region with a low atomic density.

Times Cited Count:111 Percentile:90.72(Multidisciplinary Sciences)To further understand the catalytic mechanism and inhibitor recognition of HIV-1 protease, we need to determine the locations of key hydrogen atoms in the catalytic aspartates Asp25 and Asp125. The structure of HIV-1 protease in complex with transition-state analog KNI-272 was determined by combined neutron crystallography at 1.9 resolution and X-ray crystallography at 1.4 resolution. The resulting structural data shows that the catalytic residue Asp25 is protonated and that Asp125 is deprotonated. The proton on Asp25 makes a hydrogen bond with the carbonyl group of the allophenylnorstatine group in KNI-272. The deprotonated Asp125 bonds to the hydroxyl proton of Apns. The results provide direct experimental evidence for proposed aspects of the catalytic mechanism of HIV-1 protease; and can therefore contribute substantially to the development of specific inhibitors for therapeutic application.

The aim of this neutron diffraction study is to obtain structural information about the H atoms and to determine the protonation states of the residues within the active site. The crystal was grown to a size of 1.4 mm by repeated macroseeding and a slow-cooling method using a two-liquid system. Neutron diffraction data were collected at room temperature using a BIX-4 diffractometer at the JRR-3 research reactor of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). The data set was integrated and scaled to 2.3 resolution in space group P2(1)2(1)2, with unit-cell parameters a = 59.5, b = 87.4, c = 46.8 .

The New Crossover Project (NXO) is studying effect of fission irradiation on fuel material that research activity is crossing over universities, national and private laboratories. Simulation studies are being performed to find principal and triggering processes of the rim-structure formation in high burnup LWR fuel pellet, using accelerator irradiation and computational calculations. Accelerator irradiation, high energy electron irradiation, fission energy particle beam and ion implantation (ragegas atoms) and combined overlapping irradiations are being performed. For the target of irradiation, CeO isused as simulation of nuclear fuel. The initial results were such as planar structure made by Oxygen defects created by high energy electrons, and surface modification similar to grain-sub-division created by high fluence high energy particle irradiations.
