The electron heat transport in a torus plasma which involves a radially-bounded ergodic region, where flux surfaces are partially destroyed by perturbative magnetic fields, is studied. In this paper, we have demonstrated that the radial heat conduction by the particles' parallel motion is reduced by trapped particles.

Development of a drift-kinetic simulation code for estimating collisional transport affected by RMPs and radial electric field

A drift-kinetic $$delta f$$ simulation code is developed for estimating collisional transport in quasi-steady state of toroidal plasma affected by resonant magnetic perturbations and radial electric field. In this paper, validity of the code is confirmed through several test calculations. It is found that radial electron flux is reduced by positive radial-electric field, although radial diffusion of electron is strongly affected by chaotic field-lines under an assumption of zero electric field.

The high-performance computer system Helios which is located at The Computational Simulation Centre (CSC) in The International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) started its operation in January 2012 under the Broader Approach (BA) agreement between Japan and the EU. The Helios system has been used for magnetised fusion related simulation studies in the EU and Japan and has kept high average usage rate. As a result, the Helios system has contributed to many research products in a wide range of research areas from core plasma physics to reactor material and reactor engineering. This project review gives a short catalogue of domestic simulation research projects. First, we outline the IFERC-CSC project. After that, shown are objectives of the research projects, numerical schemes used in simulation codes, obtained results and necessary computations in future.

Resonant X-ray diffraction experiments on CePd$$_3$$S$$_4$$ were performed at the Ce-$$L$$$$_{3}$$ absorption edge to study the states of quadrupolar ordering below the ferromagnetic transition temperature $$T_{rm C}$$ = 6.3 K. The magnetic structure of CePd$$_3$$S$$_4$$ was reported as a canted ferromagnetic structure with a canting angle of 51$$^circ$$. It has therefore been pointed out that the complex magnetic structure arises from the simultaneous ordering of quadrupole moments. We observed the azimuthal angle dependence of the diffraction intensity of the two forbidden reflections 003 and 104 reflections for both $$pi$$-$$pi$$' and $$pi$$-$$sigma$$' scattering processes. The results revealed that $$O$$$$_2$$$$^{0}$$-type antiferroquadrupolar ordering coexists with magnetic ordering. We infer that the magnetic structure of CePd$$_3$$S$$_4$$ is not a canted structure but a ferrimagnetic structure and that the quadrupole moment is also a primary-order parameter.

The Mizunami Underground Laboratory (MIU) Project is a comprehensive research project investigating the deep underground environment within crystalline rock being conducted by Japan Atomic Energy Agency at Mizunami City in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. This report summarizes the results of the Surface-based Investigation Phase, identifies future issues and provides direction for research to be conducted during Construction Phase and Operation Phase. The results compiled in this report will be utilized for the technical knowledge base on geological disposal of HLW, and can be used to enhance the technical basis for waste disposal in general and for development of government regulations.

Proceedings of 21st International Linear Accelerator Conference, p.488 - 490, 2003/00

Development of a superconducting proton linac is in progress in collaboration with KEK. In order to demonstrate cavity performance and to study stable accelerating field in a pulsed operation, a 600MHz superconducting cryomodule has been fabricated. The cryomodule includes two 5-cell superconducting cavities of $$beta$$=0.6 and is designed to perform 2K operation. Cold tests of the cryomodule have been performed at the temperature of 4K and 2K. In the tests, heat leak to the cavities, loaded quality factors, tuning sensitivities, frequency shifts against helium vessel pressure and Lorentz force detuning of the cavities were measured. Most of the measured data agreed with their design values, except for the heat leak and the Lorentz force detuning. As the preliminary horizontal test of the cryomodule, high power RF test has been also performed, where the surface peak fields of 10 and 16 MV/m were achieved in CW and pulsed operation, respectively. Now, the optimization of the RF control system is in progress to demonstrate stable accelerating field in a pulsed operation.
