Northeast strike faults developed in and around the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) control groundwater flow. These faults were possibly formed as a part of pull-apart structure by the right lateral movement of the Tsukiyoshi fault distributed in the north of MIU site. But the formational mechanism of these faults is still uncertain. In this joint research, the analog experiment and the numerical simulation were used to restore the geological structures around MIU site. The paleo-stress analysis were exposed an ancient deformation mechanism, and the formation timing was presumed in the regional tectonics. The results are adopted for the design of the analog experiment and the numerical simulation. The results of obtained analog experiment and numerical simulation are verified three-dimensionally, and then compared to the current geological structure model. Then the geological structure in the uninvestigated area is estimated.

Fracture imaging using Image Point transform and midpoint imaging of RVSP data

Image Point (IP) transform integrates along a hyperbolic path and converts data to a point in the IP domain so that the reflection events are accumulated to the image point for given sources in the IP domain. In addition, the image point by definition is uniquely determined and the midpoints between sources and the image points always lie on the reflector surface. Exploiting these two facts, the image point transform technique for VSP to reverse VSP data is expanded to suggest a new method called the midpoint imaging method for imaging reflectors such as fractures. Applying the transform with synthetic data for 2-D models with single reflector and two reflectors, we confirms and demonstrates that the reflection events are clearly identifiable. The midpoint imaging method can successfully image the reflector surfaces and the dip information even with only two shot records in a simple case.

Seismic interferometry synthesizes the Green's function between two receivers by calculating cross-correlation of records measured at their locations. In Japan Atomic Energy Agency(JAEA), Seismic Interferometry using blasting vibration caused by the shafts excavation had been carried out to investigate the geologic structure in the surrounding area. The result was identical to the existing seismic reflection section. In this study, we applied this technique to long time measured microtremor. The result was also identical to the results of existing section and seismic interferometry using blasting vibration caused by the shafts excavation.

Image Points are defined through geometry of sources, receivers and reflectors. IP (Image Point) transform is one type of Radon transform which change common shot section to IP domain (r-x). By the IP transform, reflection signals in time domain can be accumulated and enhanced in IP domain. We applied the IP transform to the field data of RVSP that had been carried out at the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) site. We could get the fault image around the MIU site using IP transform.

Seismic interferometry can reconstruct reflection responses by means of cross-correlation of transmission responses on the surface. An advantage of this method is that one can simulate as many shot records as the number of receivers with only one data set. We applied this method to reverse VSP data acquired by one explosive source in the subsurface at a civil construction site in Mizunami, Japan. From the observed transmission records, shot gathers are reconstructed applying cross-correlation, and following data processing including poststack migration we obtain a two-dimensional subsurface image. This section is clear enough to evaluate subsurface structures.

It is known that 3-D Vertical Seismic Profile (VSP) method has an advantage on imaging the fault and fracture zone near the borehole, especially steeply dipped structure. Cosma et al (2003) has developed the new technique named Image Point Transform (IP Transform) and applied to offset VSP data to improve the week reflection signals from the steeply dipped fracture. We test the applicability of this method to the 3-D Reverse VSP data of numerical simulation and develop the method of imaging named spectral operator of middle point of IP. In the results of applying to 3-D model of steeply dipped fracture, we know that this method is applicable to 3-D reverse VSP data and could get the good image of fracture reconstructed by spectral operator of middle point of IP.

Faults and associated fracture zones often provide the paths for migration of the gas, such as methane, hydrogen and helium, formed in the deep subsurface formations. In this study, we conducted the field measurement of methane gas concentration using a back-pack type portable Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) gas analyzer at the Atera fault area in Gifu prefecture. The measurement result suggests that the trace gas measurement using a CRDS technology can be one of the promising approaches to delineate the locations of the active faults creating migration paths of the deep-seated fluids.

To investigate the possibility of cavity ring-down spectroscopy technology to the gas release detection from the active fault to the atmosphere, we conducted field measurements at the Atera fault area in Gifu prefecture, Japan. Based on the results, we expect that the real-time high precision gas measurement can be one of the promising approaches to locate the active faults creating paths for the deepseated fluids.
