C60 films with thicknesses of 100-480 nm were deposited on Si reed substrates under in situ photoirradiation. In anelasticity measurements, no internal friction peaks associated with rotational motions of the C60 molecules were observed, and Young's modulus was 1.5 times larger than that of a pristine C60 material. X-ray diffraction patterns suggested that the face-centered cubic lattice was contracted by about 3% and locally distorted from the pristine C60 material. Raman spectra very similar to those reported for dimerized C60 were also obtained. These characteristics recovered to those of the pristine C60 materials after annealing the C60 films at 523 K. These results indicate uniform dimerization in C60 films deposited under ${it in situ}$ photoirradiation.

Elasticity study of the irradiation-induced polymerization and decomposition of C$$_{60}$$ solid

Materials Science & Engineering A, 442(1-2), p.319 - 322, 2006/12

We investigated the polymerization and decomposition of C$$_{60}$$ solids by high-energy ion irradiation. Young's modulus of the films showed a slight increase after irradiation with 15 MeV C$$^{4+}$$ ions at a dose of 1$$times$$10$$^{13}$$ ion/cm$$^{-2}$$. Relaxation and lambda-shaped peaks were observed at approximately 135 and 250 K, respectively, in the internal friction. These almost disappeared at a dose of 1$$times$$10$$^{15}$$ ion/cm$$^{-2}$$. We concluded that the polymerization of C$$_{60}$$ and the local destruction of the face-centered cubic structure proceed concurrently on irradiation, and the structural phase transition at 250 K is suppressed after irradiation with doses greater than 1$$times$$10$$^{15}$$ ion/cm$$^{-2}$$.

To perform the research and development for accelerator-driven system (ADS), Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) plans to build a Transmutation Experimental Facility under the JAERI-KEK joint J-PARC program. Transmutation Experimental Facility consists of two buildings, Transmutation Physics Experimental Facility to make reactor physics experiment with subcritical core, and ADS Target Test Facility for the preparation of irradiation database for various structural materials. In this report, purpose to build, experimental schedule, and design study of the ADS target test facility with drawer type spallation target are summarized.

Lead bismuth eutectic (LBE) is favored by spallation neutron sources and coolant in the sub-critical reactor at the accelerator driven nuclear transmutation system (ADS). Technical issues of ADS are material technology of how to compromise with flowing lead bismuth, high-energy proton accelerator technology and a sub-critical reactor system technology. This paper describes LBE technology developed at JAERI. First a scenario in order to realize the ADS is shown. The concept of spallation target test facility is introduced with a target design of thermo-fluid dynamics. Base data of flow rate and temperature of Pb-Bi during LBE circulation are described. The results of LBE loop operation under the flowing conditions of target design concept are reported. The stagnant corrosion tests were done to know the controlling parameters among the various steels. The tube-type oxygen sensor with having the solid electrolyte was studied. Cleaning techniques were developed to remove LBE from materials.
