${it Desulfovibrio subterraneus}$ sp. nov., a mesophilic sulfate-reducing deltaproteobacterium isolated from a deep siliceous mudstone formation

A novel mesophilic sulfate-reducing bacterium, designated strain HN2$$^{rm T}$$, was isolated from groundwater sampled from the subsurface Miocene Wakkanai Formation located in Horonobe, Hokkaido, Japan. The cells were Gram-negative rods, with motility conferred by a single polar flagellum. The isolate expressed desulfoviridin, but no catalase or oxidase activities was detected. Strain HN2$$^{rm T}$$ grew in a temperature range of 5-43 $$^{circ}$$C (optimum, 35 $$^{circ}$$C) and in a pH range of 6.5-7.5 (optimum, pH 7.0-7.3). It used sulfate, thiosulfate, dimethyl sulfoxide, anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate, Fe$$^{3+}$$, and manganese oxide as electron acceptors, but not elemental sulfur, nitrite, or nitrate. The bacterium showed very weak growth with sulfite as the electron acceptor. The strain fermented pyruvate and cysteine in the absence of sulfate, but not malate or succinate. The bacterium did not require NaCl, but tolerated up to 4% NaCl (w/v). Strain HN2$$^{rm T}$$ did not require vitamins. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 56.66 mol%. A 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the closest recognized relative of strain HN2$$^{rm T}$$ is ${it Desulfovibrio psychrotolerans}$ JS1$$^{rm T}$$ (97.0% similarity). The average nucleotide identity (ANI) value between strain HN2$$^{rm T}$$ and D. ${it psychrotolerans}$ JS1$$^{rm T}$$ was 79.8%. Based on the phenotypic and molecular genetic evidence, the isolate is assigned to the new species ${it Desulfovibrio subterraneus}$ sp. nov. The type strain is HN2$$^{rm T}$$ (=DSM 101010$$^{rm T}$$ =NBRC 112213$$^{rm T}$$).

The mercury target vessel is designed as multi-walled structure with thin wall (min. 3 mm), and assembled by welding. In order to estimate the structural integrity of the vessel, it is important to measure the defects in welding accurately. For nondestructive tests of the welding, radiographic testing is applicable but it is difficult to detect for some defect shapes. Therefore it is effective to do ultrasonic testing together with it. Because ultrasonic methods prescribed in JIS inspect on the plate with more than 6 mm in thickness, these methods couldn't be applied as the inspection on the vessel with thin walls. In order to develop effective method, we carried out measurements using some testing method on samples with small defect whose size is specified. In the case of the latest phased array method, measured value agreed with actual size. It was found that this method was applicable to detect defects in the thin-walled structure for which accurate inspection was difficult so far.

Determination of dissolved natural thorium and uranium in Horonobe and Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory groundwater and its thermodynamic analysis

Trace amounts of natural thorium and uranium in deep groundwater were investigated at two underground research laboratories situated at Horonobe and Mizunami, Japan. The groundwater was sampled from underground boreholes, and the colloid contribution was checked by in situ two size-fractionated ultrafiltration systems. A decrease in the concentration after in situ filtration suggested the presence of natural colloids and suspended matter that were carriers of a portion of the elements. The result of the Th and U concentrations in groundwater after 10 kDa filtration was analyzed thermodynamically using existing hydrogeological and geochemical data such as the mineral components in the groundwater at a given pH, ionic strength, concentration of co-existing ions, redox potential, and solid phase assumed. A crystalline solid phase made the solubility very low compared with that of the amorphous phase, and the solubility agreed well with the concentrations measured.

Current feeder and Coil Terminal Box (CTB) for the superconducting magnets for JT-60SA were designed. Copper busbar from power supply is connected to the High Temperature Superconductor Current Lead (HTS CL), which is installed on the vacuum vessel called CTB. The superconducting current feeder is connected to the cold end of HTS CL, and is led to main cryostat for magnets. Trial manufacturing of crank shaped feeder to reduce the thermal stress was performed. The small tool which can connect soldering joint with vertical direction was developed. Insulation materials made by manufacturing condition showed sufficient shear stress. Since the all manufacturing process concerned was confirmed, the production of current feeder and CTB can be started.

The most distinctive feature of the superconducting magnet system for JT-60SA is the optimized coil structure in terms of the space utilization as well as the highly accurate coil manufacturing, thus meeting the requirements for the steady-state tokamak research: A conceptually new outer inter-coil structure separated from the casing is introduced to the toroidal field coils to realize their slender shape, allowing large-bore diagnostic ports for detailed plasma measurements. A method to minimize the manufacturing error of the equilibrium-field coils has been established, aiming at the precise plasma shape/position control. A compact butt-joint has been successfully developed for the Central Solenoid, which allows an optimized utilization of the limited space for the Central Solenoid to extend the duration of the plasma pulse.

JT-60U magnet system will be upgraded to the superconducting coils in the JT-60SA programme of the Broader Approach activities. Terminal joint of Central Solenoid (CS) is wrap type Nb$$_{3}$$Sn-NbTi joint used for connecting CS (Nb$$_{3}$$Sn) and current feeder (NbTi). The terminal joints are placed at the top and the bottom of the CS systems. CS modules located at middle position of CS system need the lead extension from the modules to the terminal joint. The joint resistance measurement of terminal joint was performed in the test facility of National Institute for Fusion Science. The joint resistance was evaluated by the operating current and the voltage between both ends of the terminal joint part. Test results met the requirement of JT-60SA magnet system. The structural analysis of the lead extension and its support structure was conducted to confirm the support design. In this paper, the results of resistance test of joint and the structural analysis results of lead extension are reported.

In the cold test of the JT-60SA CS model coil made by Nb$$_{3}$$Sn CIC conductor, magnetic fields were measured using Hall sensors. While holding coil current of 20 kA, the magnetic fields were varying slightly with several long time constants. The range of the time constant was from 17 sec to 571 sec, which was much longer than the time constant derived from the measurement using the short straight sample. To validate the measurements, the magnetic fields of the model coil were calculated using the calculation model representing the positions of Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strands inside the CIC conductor. The calculations were in good agreement with the measurements. Consequently, the validity of magnetic field measurements was confirmed.

Modeling of butt joint composed of Nb$$_{3}$$Sn cable-in-conduit conductors

To evaluate the fabrication technology of the butt joint composed of Nb$$_{3}$$Sn CIC conductors, joint resistance and quench current were measured using a sample developed for the JT-60SA CS coil. The measurements indicate that the butt joint fulfilled the design requirements. To simulate the characteristics of the butt joint, one dimensional numerical model simplifying the butt joint configuration was developed. Using the model, joint resistance and quench current of the butt joint were calculated. The calculations were in good agreement with the measurements. As a result, the model will be valid for the simulation of the butt joint.

Central Solenoid (CS) of JT-60SA are designed with the Nb$$_{3}$$Sn cable in conduit conductor. CS model coil (CSMC) was manufactured by using the real manufacturing jigs and procedure to validate the CS manufacturing processes before starting mass production. The dimensions of the CSMC are the same as real quad-pancake. The cold test of the CSMC was performed and the test results satisfied the design requirements. These results indicate that the manufacturing processes of the JT-60SA CS has been established. In this paper, the development and the validation of the CS manufacturing processes are described.

The Origin of muddy sand sediments associated with mud volcanism in the Horonobe area of northern Hokkaido, Japan

The origin of mud from the mud-volcano-like sediments in the Horonobe area of northern Hokkaido, Japan was characterized by analyzing the mineral and chemical compositions of the mud. Mineral and chemical compositions of the mud are similar to those of the Hakobuchi Formation located at approximately 1500-2500 m depth. The results suggest that the mud originates from the Hakobuchi Formation, and also that the mud ascended from a depth of 1500-2500 m to ground surface. This result could be an exemplification of the occurrence of mud volcanism in oil and gas field and tectonic compressional region. This is useful information that should be taken into consideration in the planning and construction of underground facilities for geological disposal of HLW.

To evaluate joint fabrication technology, resistance measurements were conducted using a sample consisting of pancake and terminal joints for the JT-60SA EF coils. Both joints fulfilled the design requirement of 5 $$Omega$$ at the external field of 3 T. The electrical resistance of the pancake joint was slightly lower than that of the terminal joint. Analyses indicated that the characteristics of the conductors used in the joints affect those of the joints. The presence or absence of copper wires in the conductor is one factor that determines the characteristics of the joints.

The maximum magnetic field, current and voltage of CS for JT-60SA are 8.9 T, 20 kA and 10 kV, respectively. Nb$$_{3}$$Sn conductor with high field and high current density was developed. The outer diameter and height of CS are 2 and 1.6 m, respectively. Several components were newly developed and tested. To increase the supplying flux, winding diameter should be maximized as possible. The butt type joint was developed that can minimize the joint space. DGEBA epoxy used for main binder of insulation showed sufficient tensile strength even though the $$gamma$$ ray irradiation of 100 kGy. Insulation characteristics of 4$$times$$4 stack sample applying double of operational stress with operational cycle showed the larger withstand voltage than 21 kV. According to these results, the fabrication of CS can be started.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is the first to start the mass production of the TF conductors in March 2010 among the 6 parties who are procuring TF conductors in the ITER project. The height and width of the TF coils are 14 m and 9 m, respectively. The conductor is cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC) with a central spiral. A circular multistage superconducting cable is inserted into a circular stainless steel jacket with a thickness of 2 mm. A total of 900 Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strands and 522 copper strands are cabled around the central spiral and the cable is inserted into a round-in-round stainless steel jacket. It was observed that the cabling pitch of the destructive sample is longer than the original pitch at cabling. The JAEA carried out the tensile tests of the cable and the measurement of the cable rotation during the insertion to investigate the cause of the elongation. The cause of elongation was clarified and the results will be described in this paper.

JAEA together with the Japan Nuclear Human Resource Development Network (JN-HRD Net), the University of Tokyo (UT) and the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) cohosted the IAEA-Nuclear Energy Management School in Tokai Village, aiming that Japan will be the center of nuclear HRD in the Asian region. In the school, not only lectures by IAEA experts, but also lectures by Japanese experts and technical visits were included for foreign participants. The school contributed to the internationalization of Japanese young professionals, development of nuclear human resource of other countries, and enhancement of cooperation between IAEA and Japan. Additionally, collaborative relationship within JN-HRD Net was strengthened by the school. In this report, findings obtained during the preparatory work and the school period are reported for future international nuclear HRD activities in Japan.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency is the first to start the mass production of the TF conductors in Phase IV in March 2010 among the 6 parties who are procuring TF conductors in the ITER project. The conductor is cable-in-conduit conductor with a central spiral. A total of 900 Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strands and 522 copper strands are cabled around the central spiral and then wrapped with stainless steel tape whose thickness is 0.1 mm. Approximately 60 tons of Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strands were manufactured by the two suppliers in December 2010. This amount corresponds to approximately 55% of the total contribution from Japan. Approximately 30% of the total contribution from Japan was completed as of February 2011. JAEA is manufacturing one conductor per month under a contract with two Japanese companies for strands, one company for cabling and one company for jacketing. This paper summarizes the technical developments including a high-level quality assurance. This progress is a significant step in the construction of the ITER machine.
