Neutron devices such as neutron detectors, optical devices including supermirror devices and $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filters, and choppers are successfully developed and installed at the Materials Life Science Facility (MLF) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), Tokai, Japan. Four software components of MLF computational environment, instrument control, data acquisition, data analysis, and a database, have been developed and equipped at MLF. MLF also provides a wide variety of sample environment options including high and low temperatures, high magnetic fields, and high pressures. This paper describes the current status of neutron devices, computational and sample environments at MLF.

We developed grid-enabled application of full-scale 3D vibration simulator for an entire nuclear power plant on simple orchestration application framework (SOAF). The simulator is an analysis system to study seismic response of a whole digitalized nuclear power plant. In the simulator, components of a power plant are treated in hierarchical manner so that large components are grouped at primary level and small components such as pipes at secondary level. Boundary condition data are transferred from the primary level to the secondary level. SOAF provides functionality to enable users to simply define the data transfer in pipelined scenario which is technically difficult to realize using the existing grid technology. In this paper, we discuss technical issues of the realization of pipelined scenario on grid and demonstrate effectiveness of SOAF by analysis of High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor of JAEA using grid-enabled application implementing SOAF.

${it N,N,N',N'}$-(tetrakis-2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine (TPEN) derivatives bearing a polymerizable double bond in the substituent structure of the pyridine ring are synthesized and subjected to copolymerization with ${it N}$-isopropylacrylamide in the presence of AIBN. The obtained poly(TPEN-NIPA) gels show thermo-responsive swelling/shrinking behaviors and are employed for the extraction of cadmium(II) ion from the aqueous solution to examine the relationship of the gel characteristics and the extraction performance. The polymer gels composed of the TPEN derivative bearing C3, C4, C10 and branched C3 spacer chains are synthesized and temperature-dependent extraction behavior of cadmium ion is compared. These gels extract Cd(II) ion efficiently from the aqueous solution in the swelling state at 5$$^{circ}$$C, while little extraction is observed at 45$$^{circ}$$C with shrinking. It is found that poly(TPEN-NIPA) gel of branched C3 spacer (C3b) shows the excellent thermoresponsive extraction performance.

Full-Scale 3D vibration simulator for an entire nuclear power plant is a seismic response analysis system for a whole digitalized nuclear power plant. In the system, boundary data from large components are used as input data of small components. To make a whole simulation efficient, we introduced pipeline method in which the data were transferred each time step running all components simulations in parallel. In the realization of the method on grid, since there were no existing grid technologies to sufficiently support the method for a long time, we developed simple orchestration application framework (SOAF) and using the SOAF, we performed seismic response analysis of a test reactor of JAEA and succeeded simulation for a week.

In the atomic field, by integrating various simulation codes which were installed on distributed computers, large-scale and detailed simulations which aim explication of complicated phenomena. However integration of each simulation codes and cooperative operation of the integrated codes make heavy burden for researchers. We have developed the Simple Orchestration Application Framework (SOAF) to cooperatively control simulation codes on remote computers from a client PC. SOAF enables researchers to cooperatively execute various codes on grid infrastructure by only describing a configuration file including the information of execution codes and file flows among them. SOAF does not need substantial modification of the simulation codes. By using SOAF, we successfully execute four plasma simulation codes included in the "Burning Plasma Integrated Code" according to the scenario described in the configuration file.

We examined the intracellular localization of cisplatin, a key chemotherapeutic agent, in esophageal cancer cell lines and determined their sensitivity to cisplatin using in-air micro-PIXE. Two human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) cell lines, TE-2 and TE-13, were examined for their response to cisplatin using MTT assay, flow cytometry and DNA fragmentation assays. Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was also used to evaluate the mRNA expression of multidrug resistance protein 2 (MRP2) in both cell lines. Platinum localizations of intracellular and intranuclear were measured using in-air micro-PIXE. TE-2 cells were more sensitive to cisplatin than TE-13 cells. The results of this study suggest that in-air micro-PIXE could be a useful quantitative method for evaluating the cisplatin sensitivity of individual cells. Finally, we speculate that MRP2 in the cell membrane may play an important role in regulating cisplatin sensitivity of ESCC cells.

We have developed the Atomic Energy Grid InfraStructure (AEGIS) for establishing computational infrastructure for nuclear field. In this R&D we have inherited the knowledge and skills in ITBL Infrastructure developed in the national project ITBL (Information Technology Based Laboratory), which aims at establishment of virtual research environment where supercomputers and data bases are connected by network. Here we have focused on two issues: improvements of safety and usability. For the safety, we have made the authentication mechanism double with both the personal certification and the machine certification. For the usability, we have developed the grid-enabled client API to use grid functions on a user terminal. By those R&Ds, we have successfully contributed to various nuclear researches, such as "full scale 3D vibration simulator for an entire nuclear power plant", "simulation for predicting quake-proof capability of nuclear power plants", and so on.

We have introduced about the framework to make the integration of large and complicated simulation such as a proof strength simulation of nuclear power plants and a control simulation of nuclear fusion plasma which codes are installed to distributed computers. We able to carry out detailed simulations by integrating various simulation methods with development of simulation technique. However it becomes a burden to control the integration of each simulation code for researchers. We have noticed that the execution scenarios of each code in cooperated simulation are roughly categorized to workflow type, pipeline type, and conditional branch type. Then we have developed the framework in which just write those patterns in a configuration file and achieve the cooperative execution of element codes without substantial modification of simulation codes.

High-frequency change of beams accelerated for users is required at the JAEA AVF cyclotron, since the irradiation time is short in most cases and a large variety of beams is used. The ratio of the beam changing time to the whole operation time is not negligible and the offering machine time for users is half the required one. We are developing a technique for reducing the changing time of the magnetic field of the cyclotron, which dominates the beam changing time. Since a precise and stable magnetic field is required for acceleration in the cyclotron, especially for advanced beam applications, such as microbeam production, a magnetic field measurement system with a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) magnetometer was developed to monitor a wide range of magnetic field for acceleration of variety of beams in the JAEA AVF cyclotron.

The polymer gels composed of the TPEN derivative bearing three or four double bonds exhibit temperature-dependent change of swelling and shrinking in water. These gels extract CdII ion efficiently from the aqueous solution in the swelling state at 5$$^{circ}$$C, while little extraction was observed at 45$$^{circ}$$C with shrinking.

The counter-crossing injection, which is a realistic setup for applications, by two sub-relativistic laser pulses colliding is demonstrated in sub-relativistic intensity laser pulse interaction with plasma. The laser pulses in plasma are self-focused to higher intensity when the laser power is above the threshold of a relativistic self-focusing. The collision of self-focused laser pulses generates a high-quality electron beam with high repeatability. The generated monoenergetic electron beam has 14 MeV of the peak energy, 11% of the energy spread, 22 pC of the charge, 1.6$$pi$$mm mrad of the normalized emittance, and 50% of the repeatability.

Laser-driven plasma accelerators have been conceived to be the next-generation particle accelerators, promising ultrahigh field particle acceleration with a very short duration electron beam. In the case of electron beam generation by using one laser pulse via wavebreaking, however, it is not stable. In order to generate a stable high-quality electron beam, optical injection by collision of two laser pulses is proposed. Recently, the electron generation with this approach was demonstrated. The experiment was carried out by the perfect head-on collision, which has problems to the backward laser light and the extraction of the generated electron beam. The counter-crossing injection, which is a realistic setup for applications, by two sub-relativistic laser pulses collision with the colliding angle of 45$$^{circ}$$ is demonstrated. The collision of two laser pulses generates a high-quality electron beam with high repeatability. The generated monoenergetic electron beam has 14.4 MeV of the peak energy, 10.6% of the energy spread, 21.8 pC of the charge, 1.6 $$pi$$ mm mrad of the normalized emittance, and 47.4% of the repeatability.

"Geoscientific research" at the Tono Area is developing site investigation, characterization and assessment techniques for understanding of geological environment. Their important goal is to establish a methodology for analyzing uncertainties in a heterogeneous geological environment and to develop investigation techniques for efficiently reducing the uncertainties. In Fiscal Year 17, in addition to information from the MIZ-1 borehole investigation, present knowledge has been compiled. The proposed technique has been improved through conceptual geological modeling and groundwater analyses at the Tono Area. Design options for handling geological uncertainties based on the characterization of the geological environment have also been tested. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) It was shown that the fracture group with NW strike has high correlation with maximum measured transmissivity. This was maybe caused by the effect of regional in situ stress. (2) Through conceptual geological modelling and groundwater analysis, a procedure for modelling of the geological environment with heterogeneous characteristics was proposed. (3) From the viewpoint of improving the design of an underground facility, the existence of uncertainties of the geological environment with heterogeneous characteristics requests multiple options. A design option should be adapted to the geological environment with heterogeneous characteristics.

MBC model analysis for predicting the rock behavior in excavating the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory

As a first step of Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory Plan (MIU plan), through the laboratory and borehole in-situ tests, JNC Tono Geoscience Center plans to constitute the comprehensive geological model and predicts the rock behaviors in excavating the shaft and gallery. These model and results leads to be reflected by the next step research projects.So far, the first step of MIU plan is coming to final stage, and the second step will start at next year in which the in-situ researches are planned through the excavation. In this study, the comprehensive geometrical model was drawn out through the first step data, and MBC model analysis was carried out to predict the rock mass behavior around the shaft and gallery. The following results are obtained. (1) With MIZ-1 borehole core, artificial joints, which are assumed to be produced by rock blasting, were formed through the Brazilian test. And through the rock shear test for these joints, these mechanical properties were obtained. (2) By examining the MIZ-1 borehole research data, Mizunami site was classified by mechanical and joint properties and the Geomechanical model were made up. (3) Through the MBC model, the shaft and gallery cases were analyzed which depend on the rock mass classification, Excavation Damaged Zone, and the direction of the galleries. These results showed that in most cases, the joint opening were little because of the rock stiffness, but by the existence of high inclined joints, the side wall of the galleries were damaged by the excavation.
