Technical development for in-pile IASCC growth tests by using a 0.5T-CT specimen in JMTR

Chimi, Yasuhiro; Shibata, Akira; Ise, Hideo; Kasahara, Shigeki; Kawaguchi, Yoshihiko*; Nakano, Junichi; Omi, Masao; Nishiyama, Yutaka

Proceedings of Enlarged Halden Programme Group Meeting 2011 (CD-ROM), 10 Pages, 2011/10

In order to load a large specimen of 0.5T-CT up to a high stress intensity factor of $$sim$$30 MPa$$sqrt{m}$$, we have adopted a lever type loading unit for in-pile irradiation-assisted stress corrosion crack (IASCC) growth tests in the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR). In this unit, the applied load is generated by shrinking a bellows with lower inner gas pressure than surrounding water pressure and enlarged by leverage. The crack length of the specimen is monitored by potential drop method (PDM) using mineral insulator (MI) cables. In this paper, technical concerns of the in-pile crack growth test unit, especially the estimation procedure of applied load to the specimen inside the irradiation capsule and the evaluation of precision of the PDM signals are presented.

In-pile tests for IASCC growth behavior of irradiated 316L stainless steel under simulated BWR condition in JMTR

Chimi, Yasuhiro; Kasahara, Shigeki; Ise, Hideo; Kawaguchi, Yoshihiko*; Nakano, Junichi; Nishiyama, Yutaka

Proceedings of 15th International Conference on Environmental Degradation of Materials in Nuclear Power Systems - Water Reactors (CD-ROM), p.1219 - 1228, 2011/08

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has a plan of irradiation tests using the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR), in order to evaluate the effects of change in material properties and water chemistry caused by the neutron/$$gamma$$-ray irradiation on stress corrosion crack (SCC) growth of stainless steels from the view points of the integrity of reactor core internals for boiling water reactors (BWRs). The difference of SCC growth and its electrochemical corrosion potential (ECP) dependence between in-pile and out-of-pile tests is not fully understood because of a few in-pile data which is comparable with out-of-pile database. This paper presents a systematic review on SCC growth data of irradiated stainless steels and the outline of the in-pile test plan for crack growth of irradiated SUS316L stainless steel under simulated BWR conditions in the JMTR, together with the development of the in-pile test techniques.

The 13th harmonic of a Ti:sapphire (Ti:S) laser in the plateau region was injected as a seeding source to a 250-MeV free-electron-laser (FEL) amplifier. When the amplification conditions were fulfilled, strong enhancement of the radiation intensity by a factor of 650 was observed. The random and uncontrollable spikes, which appeared in the spectra of the Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) based FEL radiation without the seeding source, were found to be suppressed drastically to form to a narrow-band, single peak profile at 61.2 nm. The properties of the seeded FEL radiation were well reproduced by numerical simulations. We discuss the future precept of the seeded FEL scheme to the shorter wavelength region.

Regarding Irradiation Assisted Stress Corrosion Cracking (IASCC) for austenitic stainless steel of the light water reactor (LWR), a lot of data that concerns the post irradiation evaluation (PIE) is acquired. However, IASCC occurs in LWR condition. Therefore, it is necessary to confirm adequacy of the PIE data comparing the experiment data under the simulated LWR condition. Bigger specimen is needed to acquire the effective data for the destruction dynamics in the study of stress corrosion cracking under neutron irradiation condition. Therefore, development of a new crack growth unit which can load to bigger is necessary to the neutron irradiation test. As a result, a prospect was provided in the unit that could load to specimen by changing load mechanism to the lever type from the linear type. And also, in the development of crack propagation unit, some technical issues were extracted from the discussion of the unit structure adopting the LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer).

Radiation Shielding design/safety analysis required for licensing of the high intensity proton accelerator facility J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) is in progress, using various high-energy particle transport codes. Shielding benchmark problems, mainly based on experiments, on thick target neutron yield, beam dump geometry, deep penetration and radiation streaming were prepared and analyzed by the shielding design codes, in order to estimate the code's accuracy. The results of analyses show that the calculation results agree with the experiments within a factor of two on the whole.

The High Intensity Proton Accelerator Project, named as J-PARC, is in progress, aiming at studies on the latest basic science and the advancing nuclear technology. In the project, the high-energy proton accelerator complex of the world highest intensity is under construction. In order to establish a reasonable shielding design, both simplified and detailed design methods were used in the shielding design of J-PARC. This paper reviews the present status of the radiation safety design study for J-PARC.

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 41(Suppl.4), p.50 - 53, 2004/03

In order to estimate accuracy of the various calculation methods for the neutron streaming through a maze and duct in proton accelerator facilities, we performed benchmark analyses by using the radiation shielding design codes. According to the results of the benchmark analyses, it is concluded that NMTC/MCNP, MCNPX and DUCT-III are applicable to actual calculation of the duct-streaming radiations for J-PARC.

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 41(Suppl.4), p.46 - 49, 2004/03

A simple design code for duct-streaming radiations, DUCT-III was applied to the analyses of the streamed neutron spectra measured at TIARA labyrinth with two bends. The code satisfactorily reproduced the measured neutron energy spectra and the Monte Carlo calculations, except that every calculation overestimated the measured thermal components by factor of 2 or 3.
