Deuteron-induced nonelastic cross sections based on the intranuclear cascade model with independent incident particles under interaction potentials

Deuteron-induced nonelastic cross sections are studied in an extended intranuclear cascade (INC) model. A three-body framework of proton, neutron, and target is introduced into the INC model to incorporate naturally the decomposition and capture reactions from weakly bound deuterons. This framework includes three types of interaction potential, namely proton-target, neutron-target, and proton-neutron, the last of which causes the two nucleons in the deuteron to oscillate and play an important role in its breakup. The calculated results reproduce well the experimental data for $$^{12}$$C, $$^{40}$$Ca, $$^{58}$$Ni, and $$^{208}$$Pb targets with almost the same parameters as those determined previously for nucleon-induced nonelastic reactions.

A Simplified Cluster Analysis of Electron Track Structure for Estimating Complex DNA Damage Yields

Among various DNA damage induced after irradiation, clustered damage composed of at least two vicinal lesions within from 10 to 20 base pairs is recognized as fatal damage to human tissue. Such clustered damage yields have been evaluated by means of computational approaches; however, the simulation validity has not been sufficiently made yet. Meanwhile, the experimental technique to detect clustered DNA damage has been evolved in the recent decades, so both approaches with simulation and experiment get used to be available for investigating clustered damage recently. In this study, we have developed a simple model for estimating clustered damage yield based on the spatial density of ionization and electronic excitation events obtained by the PHITS code, and compared the computational results to the experimental clustered damage coupled with base damage (BD) measured by gel electrophoresis and atomic force microscopy. The computational results agreed well with experimental fractions of clustered damage of strand breaks (SB) and BD, when the yield ratio of BD/SSB is assumed to be 1.3. From the comparison of complex DNA double-strand break coupled with BDs between simulation and experimental data, it was suggested that aggregation degree of the events along electron track reflects the complexity of DNA damage. The resent simulation enables to quantify the type of clustered damage which cannot be measured in in vitro experiment, which succeeded in interpreting the experimental detection efficiency for clustered BD.

Pressure-induced stacking disorder in boehmite

The structure of an aluminum layered hydroxide, boehmite ($$gamma$$-AlOOH), as a function of pressure was studied by using ${it in situ}$ synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction. Peak broadening and subsequent splitting, which are only found for hkl (h $$neq$$ 0) peaks in the X-ray diffraction patterns above 25 GPa, are explained by stacking disorder accompanied with a continuously increasing displacement of the AlO$$_{6}$$ octahedral layer along a-axis. This finding could be the first experimental result for the pressure-induced stacking disorder driven by the continuous layer displacement. The magnitude of the layer displacement was estimated from the X-ray scattering profile calculation based on the stacking disordered structure model. Hydrogen bond geometries of boehmite, obtained by structure refinements on the observed neutron diffraction patterns for deuterated sample up to 10 GPa, show linearly approaching O-D covalent and D$$cdots$$O hydrogen bond distances and they could merge below 26 GPa. The pressure-induced stacking disorder would make the electrostatic potential of hydrogen bonds asymmetric, yielding less chance for the proton-tunnelling.

Deuteron production from intermediate-energy proton-nucleus interactions was investigated through experiments and model calculations, mainly to develop a theoretical model by elucidating the mechanism of cluster production. Spectral double-differential cross sections were measured for inclusive ($$p$$, $$xd$$) reactions on five targets in the periodic table, namely $$^{12}$$C, $$^{27}$$Al, $$^{51}$$V, $$^{93}$$Nb, and $$^{197}$$Au, at beam energies of 300 and 392 MeV. The cross sections were determined in almost the entire outgoing energy range from the highest down to 30 MeV and at laboratory angles from 20$$^{circ}$$ to 104$$^{circ}$$. To interpret the measured spectra, we proposed a new model that includes the nucleon correlations of the initial- and final-state interactions to describe cluster knockout and pickup within the intranuclear cascade model. The results of the model calculations showed reasonable agreements with those of the experiments. Moreover, the model indicated reasonable predictive power for the ($$p$$, $$^{3}$$He$$x$$), ($$p$$, $$x$$$$alpha$$), and ($$d$$, $$xd$$) reactions measured elsewhere.

${it N,N,N',N'}$-(tetrakis-2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine (TPEN) derivatives bearing a polymerizable double bond in the substituent structure of the pyridine ring are synthesized and subjected to copolymerization with ${it N}$-isopropylacrylamide in the presence of AIBN. The obtained poly(TPEN-NIPA) gels show thermo-responsive swelling/shrinking behaviors and are employed for the extraction of cadmium(II) ion from the aqueous solution to examine the relationship of the gel characteristics and the extraction performance. The polymer gels composed of the TPEN derivative bearing C3, C4, C10 and branched C3 spacer chains are synthesized and temperature-dependent extraction behavior of cadmium ion is compared. These gels extract Cd(II) ion efficiently from the aqueous solution in the swelling state at 5$$^{circ}$$C, while little extraction is observed at 45$$^{circ}$$C with shrinking. It is found that poly(TPEN-NIPA) gel of branched C3 spacer (C3b) shows the excellent thermoresponsive extraction performance.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled $$p+p$$ collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to $$p+p$$ collisions.

We investigate proton-production double-differential cross sections (DDXs) for 300- and 392-MeV proton-induced reactions on O, V, Tb, Ta, Au, Pb, and Bi. Emitted proton energies are measured with stacked scintillator spectrometers by the $$Delta$$$$E$$-$$E$$ technique. Experimental results are compared with the intranuclear cascade (INC) and quantum molecular dynamics models. Although both models can reproduce spectral DDXs, there is a difference at the most forward and backward angles. The cause of these differences is discussed in terms of the refraction caused by the nuclear potential. Angular distributions of the present data are well accounted for by the Kalbach systematics plus INC one-step calculations. The quasi-free-scattering contribution increases with decreasing target mass and increasing emission energy.

The obtained poly(TPEN-NIPA)gels show thermo-responsive swelling/shrinking behaviors and are employed for the extraction of cadmium(II) ion from the aqueous solution to examine the relationship of the gel characteristics and the extraction performance. The polymer gels composed of the TPEN derivative bearing three or four double bonds exhibit temperature-dependent change of swelling and shrinking in water. These gels extract CdII ion efficiently from the aqueous solution in the swelling state at 5$$^{circ}$$C, while little extraction was observed at 45$$^{circ}$$C with shrinking.

Localized tungsten deposition in divertor region in JT-60U

Deposition profiles of tungsten released from the outer divertor were studied in JT-60U. A neutron activation method was used for the first time to accurately measure deposited tungsten. Surface density of tungsten in the thick carbon deposition layer can be measured by this method. Tungsten was mainly deposited on the inner divertor (around inner strike points) and on the outer wing of the dome. Toroidal distribution of the W deposition was significantly localized near the tungsten released position, while other metallic impurities such as Fe, Cr, Ni were distributed more uniformly. These data indicate that inward drift in the divertor region played a significant role in tungsten transport in JT-60U.

Coulomb explosion of methanol induced by intense laser pulses with $$Delta$$t = 7 and 21 fs is investigated by coincidence momentum imaging. When $$Delta$$t = 7, the angular distribution of recoil vectors for the direct C-O bond breaking exhibits a peak deflected from the laser polarization direction by 30-45 deg., and the corresponding angular distribution for the migration pathway exhibits almost the same profile. When the laser pulse is stretched to $$Delta$$t = 21 fs, the angular distributions for the direct and migration pathways exhibit a broad peak along the laser polarization direction. However, the extent of the anisotropy in the migration pathway is smaller than that in the direct pathway, exhibiting a substantial effect of hydrogen atom migration.
