Three electrostatic accelerators at TIARA were operated on schedule in fiscal year 2012 except changing its schedule by cancellations of users. The yearly operation time of the 3 MV tandem accelerator, the 400 kV ion implanter and the 3MV single-ended accelerator were in the same levels as the ordinary one, whose operation time totaled to 2,073, 1,847 and 2,389 hours, respectively. The tandem accelerator had no trouble, whereas the ion implanter and the single-ended accelerator stopped by any troubles for one day and four days, respectively. The molecular ion beam of helium hydride was generated by the ion implanter, because the users required irradiation of several cluster ions in order to study the effect of irradiation. As a result, its intensity of beam was 50 nA at 200 kV. The ion beam of tungsten (W) at 15 MeV was accelerated by the tandem accelerator, whose intensity was 20 nA at charge state of 4+, because of the request from a researcher in the field of nuclear fusion.

Recent studies about ECRIS have revealed that not only the maximum magnetic field (B$$_{rm max}$$) but also the minimum field(B$$_{rm min}$$) has effect on the production ability. A superconducting ECRIS which can change the B$$_{rm min}$$ distribution with plural solenoids shows that a flat distribution of B$$_{rm min}$$ (flat B$$_{rm min}$$) gives better performance in highly charged ion production than classical B$$_{rm min}$$. Superconducting device of conduction cooling type is useful, because a Lq-helium system needs a large quantity of Lq-helium to be supplied at after every quench. However, many refrigerators are necessary to keep low temperature against the heat through the current leads of a number of coils to form flat-B$$_{rm min}$$. Therefore, we have designed a coil configuration which can adjust B$$_{rm max}$$ and flat-B$$_{rm min}$$ with the minimum lead number of four. The flat-B$$_{rm min}$$ is formed by three central coils connected one another between the mirror coils. There is another pair of coils to adjust B$$_{rm max}$$ of the injection side keeping flat B$$_{rm min}$$ unchanged.

The AVF cyclotron was operated from May 9th in fiscal 2011 and all the planned experiments on April were cancelled due to scheduled blackouts originated from the Great East Japan Earthquake. The total operation time amounted to 3,038.4 hours. The extended operation from Friday evening to Saturday evening was carried out eight times in order to supply the cancellation on April. The regular yearly overhaul and maintenance were carried out.

The three electrostatic accelerators at the TIARA had no mechanical damage when the Tohoku earthquake happened on March 11, 2011. But, they could not be operated during April, due to the influence of planned power outage by TEPCO. These accelerators additionally operated on Saturday for ten days in order to compensate for the lost experiment time. As a result, the yearly operation time had kept the same level as the ordinary one. The ion beam of erbium (Er) with 11.7MeV was accelerated newly by the tandem accelerator, whose intensity was 20nA at charge state of 3+. The sequential generation/irradiation of two different kinds of fullerene ions was achieved at the ion implanter by a mixed powder method without exchange of the Freeman type ion source by the user's request.

The three electrostatic accelerators at TIARA had no damage when the Tohoku earthquake happened on March 11, 2011. But, they could not be operated until end of April, due to the influence of planned power outage and keep out into the controlled area for radiation. These accelerators additionally operated on Saturday for twelve days in order to compensate for the lost experiment time. Therefore, the yearly operation time had kept the same level as the ordinary one. The tandem accelerator has stopped leakage of the SF$$_{6}$$ gas from the base flange on the tank by the Viton gasket of rectangular cross section at the new type.

Reduction of the beam changing time is required to increase the available beam time for users. We are developing a technique for reducing the changing time of the magnetic field of the cyclotron, since it takes a long changing time to form the magnetic field for acceleration. Since the deviation of the magnetic field from the desired value for acceleration in the start-up process of the magnetic field dose not decrease in a short time, a correction system of the cyclotron magnetic field with a bipolar power supply and a 5-turn coil was developed. We confirmed that this system enables the magnetic field to be controlled quickly with a pc-based PID controller.

A phase bunching effect has been achieved for the first time using a rising slope of the dee voltage waveform produced at the first acceleration gap between the RF shielding cover of the inflector and the puller in the new central region of the JAEA AVF cyclotron. The feasibility of the phase bunching effect in the central region for a two-dee system with a span angle of 86 $$^{circ}$$ in three acceleration harmonic modes was assessed by a simple geometrical analysis of particle trajectories and a three-dimensional beam orbit simulation. The simulation indicated that the initial beam phase width of 40 RF degrees is compressed to 11 RF degrees in the second harmonic mode. A phase width of 1.5 RF degrees FWHM for a 260 MeV $$^{20}$$Ne$$^{7+}$$ beam accelerated in the second harmonic mode was reduced by the bunching effect, compared with the beam phase width of 7.3 RF degrees FWHM in the same harmonic mode for a 10 MeV H$$^{+}$$ beam accelerated in the original central region.
