Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been planning in-situ gas migration test in Horonobe URL, Hokkaido. This paper discusses the optimum gas injection procedure for the test to understand gas migration behaviour in surrounded rock. The stepwise constant gas injection was selected, taking into account domestic and overseas gas related research results. Hydro-mechanical-gas coupling analysis which is able to consider the dissolved methane in Horonobe groundwater was applied to evaluate the gas behaviour. The results have indicated no significant mechanical damages to the rock and have supported the sppropriateness of selected gas injection procedure for the test.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been planning ${it in-situ}$ gas migration test in Horonobe URL, Hokkaido. It is expected that dissolved methane in Horonobe groundwater might have an effect on gas migration behaviour in bedrock. A series of two-phase multi-component analyses by use of GETFLOWS were conducted to understand the influence of dissolved methane. The increase of total gas pressure has been shown due to the existence of dissolved methane. The results also indicated that the injected nitrogen gas volume was influenced by dissolved methane.

We have been developing an advanced reprocessing system for spent FBR fuels based on precipitation method using pyrrolidone derivatives. In the present study, the solubility of UO$$_{2}$$(NO$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$(NRP)$$_{2}$$ (NRP = $$N$$-alkyl-2-pyrrolidone, alkyl = $$n$$-propyl, $$n$$-butyl, $$iso$$-butyl and cyclohexyl) in aqueous solutions with HNO$$_{3}$$ has been examined. As a result, the solubility of each species of UO$$_{2}$$(NO$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$(NRP)$$_{2}$$ generally decreases with increasing concentrations of HNO$$_{3}$$ and NRP ($$C$$(HNO$$_{3}$$) and $$C$$(NRP), respectively). The solubility of UO$$_{2}$$(NO$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$(NRP)$$_{2}$$ also depends on the type of NRP; a higher hydrophobicity of NRP generally leads to a lower solubility of UO$$_{2}$$(NO$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$(NRP)$$_{2}$$. The logarithms of effective solubility products ($$K$$$$_{rm eff}$$) of UO$$_{2}$$(NO$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$(NRP)$$_{2}$$ at different $$C$$(HNO$$_{3}$$) values and 293 K were evaluated.

Effects of the surface condition of the substrates on the electrical characteristics of 4H-SiC MOSFETs

Oshima, Takeshi; Onoda, Shinobu; Kamada, Toru*; Hotta, Kazutoshi*; Kawata, Kenji*; Eryu, Osamu*

Materials Science Forum, 615-617, p.781 - 784, 2009/00

Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) were fabricated on p-type epitaxial 4H-SiC substrates with different surface conditions. These electrical characteristics were compared from a point of view of the surface condition. The MOSFETs on Chemical Mechanical Polished substrates showed the drain current of the order of 10$$^{-12}$$ A at a gate voltage of zero. The drain current increased with increasing the surface roughness of substrates. With decreasing the surface roughness of substrates, the values of the threshold voltage decreased and the quality of gate oxide became better.

Molecular and crystal structures of UO$$_{2}$$(NO$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$(NRP)$$_{2}$$ (NRP = N-alkylated 2-pyrrolidone derivative) have been investigated by using single crystal X-ray analysis, IR and Raman spectroscopies. All UO$$_{2}$$(NO$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$(NRP)$$_{2}$$ complexes have typical structural properties of UO$$_{2}$$(NO$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$(L)$$_{2}$$ (L = unidentate ligand), i.e., hexagonal-bipyramidal geometry, two NRP and two NO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$ located in trans positions in an equatorial plane of the uranyl ion. Observation of the crystals of the uranyl nitrate complexes with N-n-propyl-2-pyrrolidone and N-iso-propyl-2-pyrrolidone indicate the presence of significant voids in the crystal lattices of these compounds. From this result, an approach for construction of efficient packing of UO$$_{2}$$(NO$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$(NRP)$$_{2}$$ was proposed. Consequently, it was found that N-iso-butyl-2-pyrrolidone completely satisfies with the requirement for the efficient packing by filling the voids with the alkyl chain.

Devil's flower resulting from a successive charge disproportionation of NaV$$_{2}$$O$$_{5}$$; Understanding of the details of the Ising spin and the competitive interactions which made the devil's flower bloom

Owada, Kenji; Fujii, Yasuhiko; Muraoka, Jiro*; Nakao, Hironori*; Murakami, Yoichi*; Noda, Yukio*; Osumi, Hiroyuki*; Ikeda, Naoshi*; Shobu, Takahisa; Isobe, Masahiko*; et al.

Devil's flower has been found in a temperature-pressure phase diagram of NaV$$_{2}$$O$$_{5}$$, which shows a charge disproportionation (CD) at ambient pressure. By a complementary use of an X-ray structural analysis and a resonant X-ray diffraction, which is sensitive to CD, we have investigated the structural relationship between two ground states appeared in lower and higher pressure regions including the charge arrangements. It has been clarified that two equivalent types of charge arrangement in CD correspond to the Ising variable in NaV$$_{2}$$O$$_{5}$$. The atomic shifts are regarded as linearly coupled to the Ising spins. The results lead us to the conclusion that it is the first time that the devil's flower blooms in a charge-disproportionation system. The results also lead us to a hypothesis that the competitive interactions between a Ising spins may result from the Ising spin-phonon coupling.

We have developed a phoswich detector for neutron spectrometry, which adopts a reversed configuration of slow- and fast-decay-time scintillators in its inner and surrounding outer regions, respectively, in the detection of recoil protons from a hydrogenous radiator. The phoswich detector consists of an inner slow, NaI(Tl) scintillator, and an outer fast, plastic scintillator. The response functions of the phoswich detector were measured for neutron energies ranging from 100 to 350 MeV. The experiment used the recoil-proton method and pulse-shape discrimination with the two-gate integration technique using a spallation neutron source at the WNR facility of the LANSCE. To evaluate the effectiveness of the phoswich configuration, full energy deposition fraction was calculated. The calculation confirmed that the phoswich detector with a reversed configuration is useful for neutron measurements.

Structural relations between two ground states of the ANNNI (Axial Next Nearest Neighbor Ising) compound NaV$$_{2}$$O$$_{5}$$, C$$_{1/4}$$- and C$$_{0}$$-phases below and above the transition pressure $$P_{rm C}$$ = 1 GPa, were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scattering techniques. The structure of the C$$_{0}$$-phase is well explained by the $$A$$($$A'$$) pattern which is one of four layers ($$AAA'A'$$) of the C$$_{1/4}$$-phase, however, the amount of the atomic shifts under the conditions 1.6 GPa and 6 K is 27% that under ambient pressure. On the other hand, resonant X-ray scattering showed that the charges are disproportionated under high pressure. Based on these facts, it was concluded that charge disproportionation corresponds to the Ising variable in NaV$$_{2}$$O$$_{5}$$, where the atomic shifts are regarded as linearly coupled to the Ising spins. These results lead to the hypothesis that the competitive interactions between the Ising spins may result from the Ising spin-phonon coupling.
