It was decided to revise the book of "Actual Radiation Safety Management", which has been used as a main text for the radiation protection supervisors, in order to reflect the latest amendment of the Radiation Hazards Prevention Act. Then, we revised Chapter 2 "Radiation measurement" and Chapter 3 "Measurement and estimation of exposed dose" of the book, which were the writing parts of the current version, so as to incorporate the most up-to-date information. Main subjects of these revises were the change of radiation and tissue weighting factors in the 2007 recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), update of the information about survey meters and personal dosimeters, clarification of sentences and so on.

Times Cited Count:10 Percentile:56.74(Environmental Sciences)We have developed polyurethane-based tissue substitutes simulating lung, soft tissue, muscle, muscle-adipose mixture tissue, cartilage, brain, larynx, trachea, thyroid, kidney, liver and skin. The formulation of the tissue substitutes for photons was based on the basic data method together with an equation for calculating the optimum relative mass of corrective additives. The tissue substitutes were formulated to be phantom materials in the photon energy range of at least 10 keV-10 MeV. In particular, they were designed to match the tissues with linear attenuation coefficients for low photon energy (13.6, 17.2 and 20.2 keV from Pu) and to have the same mass densities as the tissues. The tissue substitutes developed in the present study were examined for the photon transmissions using 16.6 keV KX-rays from Nb. The experimental transmission curves of the substitutes were found to be in good agreement with those derived from data on the tissues in ICRP Publication 23. It was found that the tissue substitutes are suitable as the corresponding tissues defined in ICRP.

We have studied the formulation of skeletal substitutes for a in vivo calibration phantom using the basic data method. An equation for calculating the optimum relative mass of the corrective additives was developed. Also, epoxy resin based tissue substitutes simulating the skeleton were developed. The substitutes were examined for the photon transmissions using 16.6keV KX-rays from 93mNb and 59.5keV gamma rays from 241Am. It was found that the experimental transmission curves of the substitutes are in good agreement with the calculated ones. The equation for the corrective additive was validated. The skeletal substitutes were found to be suitable as the corresponding tissues defined in ICRP Publication.23.

It is necessary to develop suitable tissue substitutes for the respiratory tract phantom. In the present study, optimum amounts of additive in the base materials were calculated in accordance with the basic data method. On the basis of the method, tissue substitutes with high mass density were made on an experimental basis. The substitutes were examined for the photon transmissions using 16.6 keV K-Xrays from Nb-93m and 59.5 keV gamma-rays from Am-241. It was found that the experimental transmission curves of the tissue substitutes are in good agreement with the calculated ones. Furthermore, mass attenuation coefficients for the tissue substitutes of the JAERI torso phantom were evaluated. It was found that the tissue substitutes are suitable as phantom materials and can simulate the body tissues defined in ICRP Publication.23.
