Terada, Atsuhiko; Takegami, Hiroaki; Noguchi, Hiroki; Kamiji, Yu; Ishikura, Shuichi*

Proceedings of 19th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE-19) (CD-ROM), 6 Pages, 2011/10

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been conducting study on thermo-chemical Iodine-Sulfur (IS) process for water splitting hydrogen production. In design of the IS test equipment, it is important to design ceramics chemical reactors with high performance from the viewpoint of thermal hydraulics and structural integrity. A new simple hydraulic analytical code has been developed for considering sulfuric acid solution as a mixture of two components especially in the H$$_{2}$$SO$$_{4}$$ decomposer. Complex flow with liquid-vaporized interaction involving chemical reaction will be characterized in the H$$_{2}$$SO$$_{4}$$ decomposer. Based on the preliminary analytical results obtained with above mentioned code, conceptual investigation of structural integrity of ceramics decomposer was carried out by a general commercial FEM code.

Umemori, Kensei*; Furuya, Takaaki*; Kako, Eiji*; Noguchi, Shuichi*; Sakai, Hiroshi*; Sato, Masato*; Shishido, Toshio*; Watanabe, Ken*; Yamamoto, Yasuchika*; Shinoe, Kenji*; et al.

Proceedings of 15th International Conference on RF Superconductivity (SRF 2011) (Internet), p.956 - 961, 2011/07

The Compact ERL (cERL) project is advanced in Japan. Its aim is to demonstrate the circulation of 100 mA electron beams with energy of 35-200 MeV. Superconducting cavities are key components for realizing ERL and used for injector part and main linac part. Critical issue for the injector part is the development of input power coupler. Prototype input couplers were fabricated and high power test was performed. Cooling ability of HOM coupler is also important for CW operation of cavity. At main linac part, HOM damped 9-cell cavities are applied to avoid BBU instabilities. Prototypes were fabricated for the cavity, the input coupler and the HOM absorber. Their performance was investigated. For both parts, cryomodules are under construction and will be completed in 2012.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

Proceedings of 14th International Conference on RF Superconductivity (SRF 2009) (Internet), p.896 - 901, 2009/09

Construction of the Compact ERL is planned in Japan, in order to test the key technology to realize a future ERL based X-ray light source. The operation of 60-200 MeV beam energy and 100 mA beam current are proposed. The superconducting cavity is one of the key components and applied for the injector part and the main linac part. At the injector part, most challenging issue is an input coupler, which has to handle more than 300 kW input power per cavity. On the other hand, strong HOM damping is required for the main linac, in order to avoid beam instabilities and large heat load at cryomodules. Status of cavity developments, together with cryomodule developments, including input couplers and HOM couplers/absorbers, are described in this paper.

Nihon Genshiryoku Gakkai Wabun Rombunshi, 7(2), p.134 - 141, 2008/06

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been conducting R&D on hydrogen production by the thermo-chemical Iodine-Sulfur (IS) process to meet massive hydrogen demand in future hydrogen economy. In the IS process, sulfuric acid (H$$_{2}$$SO$$_{4}$$) is evaporated and decomposed into H$$_{2}$$O and SO$$_{3}$$ in a H$$_{2}$$SO$$_{4}$$ decomposer operated under high temperature condition up to 500$$^{circ}$$C. We have proposed a new decomposer concept of a block type heat exchanger made of SiC ceramic which has a salient corrosion resistant performance under severe corrosion condition. To verify mechanical feasibility of the concept, temperature distributions of sulfuric acid and helium gas were analyzed with newly coded analytical system applicable to binary mixture such as H$$_{2}$$SO$$_{4}$$ whose boiling point depends on concentration. Thermo-mechanical simulations with a general-purpose FEM code, which used the heat exchange simulation results, showed that maximum stress generated around the dryout region, which was about half of allowable tensile stress of SiC.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been proceeding design works on a pilot test plant of 30Nm$$^{3}$$/hr-scale hydrogen production by using thermo-chemical water splitting process by iodine and sulfur (IS process) to contribute future hydrogen economy using high-temperature gas-cooled reactors. In parallel to the design works, key engineering issues on corrosion-resistant pipelines and its sealing using dish-type springs were examined under high temperature conditions. This paper introduces experimental results of heat cycle test results of a glass-lining pipe and seal performance using dish-type springs which works as thermal expansion absorber of bolts.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been conducting study on thermochemical IS process for hydrogen production. A pilot test of IS process is under planning that covers four R&D subjects: (1) construction of a pilot test plant made of industrial materials and completion of hydrogen production test using electrically-heated helium gas as the process heat supplier, (2) development of analytical code system, (3) component tests to assist the hydrogen production test and also to improve the process performance for the commercial plant, (4) design of HTTR-IS system. Development of innovative chemical reactors is in progress, which are equipped with ceramic heat exchanger. In design of the IS plant, it is important to establish the system for "design by analysis". Therefore, we have developed a multi-phase flow analysis code that can analyze systems in which chemical reactions occur

A prototype cryomodule containing two 9-cell superconducting cavities of $$beta$$=0.725 and $$f$$$$_{0}$$=972 MHz had been constructed under the collaboration of Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) and High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) on the development of superconducting LINAC for Accelerator Driven System (ADS). Cool-down tests to 2 K of the cryomodule and high power rf tests with a 972 MHz pulsed klystron have been carried out. Rf power of 350 kW in pulsed operation of 3 msec and 25 Hz was transferred to a nine-cell cavity through an input coupler. Accelerating gradients of 14 MV/m (compared to the specification of 10 MV/m) have been achieved in both cavities. Compensation of Lorentz-force detuning by a piezo tuner was successfully demonstrated.

The J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) LINAC will be commissioned with energy of 181-MeV using 50-keV ion source, 3-MeV RFQ, 50-MeV DTL and 181-MeV SDTL (Separated DTL) on September 2006. It is planed to be upgraded by using a 400-MeV ACS (Annular Coupled Structure), which is a high-beta structure most suitable for the J-PARC, in a few years from the commissioning. The first ACS type cavity, which will be used as the first buncher between the SDTL and the ACS, is under fabrication. Detailed design and tuning procedure of ACS cavities has been studied with RF simulation analysis and cold-model measurements. The results of cold-model measurements, fabrication status, and related development items are described in this paper.
