A lowering of work function for LaB$$_{6}$$ by monolayer hexagonal BN coating is reported. Photoemission electron microcopy (PEEM) and thermionic emission electron microscopy (TEEM) both revealed that the hBN coated region of a LaB$$_{6}$$(100) single crystal has lower work function compared to the bare (i.e., non-coated) and graphene coated regions. A larger decrease of work function for the hBN coated LaB$$_{6}$$(100) compared to graphene coated LaB$$_{6}$$(100) was qualitatively supported by our density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Adding an oxide layer in the calculations improved consistency between the calculation and experimental results. We followed up our calculations with synchrotron-radiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SR-XPS) and confirmed the presence of an oxide layer on our LaB$$_{6}$$.

Immersion of graphene in KOH solution improves its mobility on SiO$$_{2}$$/Si wafers. This is thought to be due to electron doping by modification with K atoms, but the K atom concentration C$$_{K}$$ in the graphene has not been clarified yet. In this study, the C$$_{K}$$ was determined by XPS analysis using high-brilliance synchrotron radiation. The time evolution of C$$_{K}$$ was determined by real-time observation, and the C$$_{K}$$ before irradiation of synchrotron radiation was estimated to be 0.94%. The C 1s spectrum shifted to the low binding energy side with the desorption of K atoms. This indicates that the electron doping concentration into graphene is decreasing, and it is experimentally confirmed that K atoms inject electrons into graphene.

We report on the measurement of deep inner-shell 2p X-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) patterns from laser-aligned I$$_{2}$$ molecules using X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pulses. The XPD patterns of the I$$_{2}$$ molecules, aligned parallel to the polarization vector of the XFEL, were well matched with our theoretical calculations. Further, we propose a criterion for applying our molecular-structure-determination methodology to the experimental XPD data. In turn, we have demonstrated that this approach is a significant step toward the time-resolved imaging of molecular structures.

By introducing 13th- (61.7 nm) and 15th-order harmonics (53.4 nm) of femtosecond laser pulses at 800 nm into an undulator of SCSS (SPring-8 Compact SASE Source) test accelerator at RIKEN, these harmonic pulses were amplified by a factor of more than 10$$^{2}$$ with a high contrast ratio through the interaction between accelerated electron bunches and the harmonic pulses. From numerical simulations of the amplification processes of high-order harmonic pulses in the undulator, optimum conditions of the electron bunch duration interacting with the high-order harmonic pulses were investigated for generating full-coherent and intense pulses in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength region.

The 13th harmonic of a Ti:sapphire (Ti:S) laser in the plateau region was injected as a seeding source to a 250-MeV free-electron-laser (FEL) amplifier. When the amplification conditions were fulfilled, strong enhancement of the radiation intensity by a factor of 650 was observed. The random and uncontrollable spikes, which appeared in the spectra of the Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) based FEL radiation without the seeding source, were found to be suppressed drastically to form to a narrow-band, single peak profile at 61.2 nm. The properties of the seeded FEL radiation were well reproduced by numerical simulations. We discuss the future precept of the seeded FEL scheme to the shorter wavelength region.

Using a partially deuterated KDP crystal for an optical parametric amplifier, we demonstrated ultrabroadband optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification of more than 250 nm bandwidth at a center wavelength of 1050 nm. We numerically show how to control the broadband phase matching conditions at different wavelengths to match center wavelengths of suitable broadband seed sources by adjusting the deuteration level in partially deuterated KDP.

Proceedings of the 8th International Workshop on Radiation Effects on Semiconductor Devices for Space Applications (RASEDA-8), p.127 - 130, 2008/12

Results of our study of effects of high-light-intensity and high-temperature conditions (HIHT) on the output performance of an InGaP/GaAs/Ge triple-junction solar cell are described herein. The HIHT conditions are adjusted for spacecraft environments expected for a Venus mission (Planet-C) and a Mercury mission (MMO) to be undertaken by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Measurements of current-voltage characteristics under high light intensity for wide range of cell temperatures exhibit a kinked pattern at 0 current at +200$$^{circ}$$C. The thermal cycle test results for bare cells with a wide temperature range show no output performance degradation. Continuous operation tests of 3J cells under HIHT conditions reveal gradual current output degradation, implying that solar panel design should address decreased output specifically.

The concentrations of $$^{214}$$Pb and $$^{214}$$Bi in rainwater was measured by a low background Ge detector. The concentrations of $$^{214}$$Pb and $$^{214}$$Bi were inverse relations with rainfall rate in some rainfall events, and the concentration ratio of $$^{214}$$Bi to $$^{214}$$Pb would be a weak inverse relation with rainfall rate. The model was considered about the scavenging effects of rainfall to Radon decay products, and those results were discussed with the model.

The attractive concepts for Sodium-, lead-bismuth-, helium- and water-cooled FBRs have been created through using typical plant features and employing advanced technologies. Efforts on evaluating technological prospects of feasibility have been paid for these concepts. Also, it was comfirmed if these concepts satisfy design requierments of capability and performance presumed in the feasibilty study on commertialization of Fast Breeder Reactor Systems. As results, it was concluded that the selection of sodium-cooled reactor was most rational for practical use of FBR technologies in 2015.

Density measurement of molten NdCl$$_3$$-NaCl and NdCl$$_3$$-KCl system by $$gamma$$ ray attenuation

Sato, Tadashi; Okamoto, Yoshihiro; Ogawa, Toru

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 39(Suppl.3), p.635 - 637, 2002/11

Densities of molten chlorides mixtures of NdCl$$_3$$-NaCl and NdCl$$_3$$-KCl systems have been measured using $$gamma$$-ray attenuation method as a function of temperature. Gamma ray spectra of Ho-166m radiation source were taken before and after passing through the molten chlorides in a quartz cell by a Ge-detector coupled with muluti-channel analyzer. The density was calculated with observed attenuation factor, cross section data of photons for relevant elements and length of the cell. The measured densities of molten NdCl$$_3$$-NaCl and NdCl$$_3$$-KCl were compared with literature data by dilatometric method.
