Development of inspection and repair techniques in reactor vessel of experimental fast reactor "Joyo"; Retrieval of the bent test subassembly

Ashida, Takashi; Ito, Hideaki; Miyamoto, Kazuyuki*; Nakamura, Toshiyuki; Koga, Kazuhiro*; Ohara, Norikazu*; Ino, Hiroichi*

Nihon Genshiryoku Gakkai Wabun Rombunshi, 15(4), p.210 - 222, 2016/12

In the experimental fast reactor Joyo, it was confirmed that the top of the irradiation test sub-assembly of material testing rig named "MARICO-2" had been broken and bent onto the in-vessel storage rack as an obstacle and had damaged the upper core structure (UCS). As the result, for Joyo restart, it was necessary to replace the damaged UCS and to retrieve the bent sub-assembly. This paper describes in-vessel repair techniques performed in the retrieval work of the obstacle inside of the reactor vessel. The devices which were prepared for this work demonstrated expected performance under the environmental conditions of an SFR such as high temperature and radiation dose, and the work was completed in 2014. The successful operation of this retrieval work of the damaged component inside of a reactor vessel will contribute to the development of in-service inspections and repair technics in an SFR.

In this work, we tried to determine reaction cross sections for Y and Tb induced by neutrons at 300 MeV, which have never been reported. The irradiations were carried out using neutrons produced through $$^{7}$$Li(p, n) reaction at N0 beam line in the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka University. To estimate quasi-monoenergetic neutron induced cross sections, the target stacks of Y and Tb were irradiated on the two angles of 0 degree and 30 degree for the axis of the primary proton beam. Neutron cross sections were estimated by subtracting the activities produced in the samples placed on 30 degree from those of 0 degree to correct the contribution of the low energy tail in the neutron spectrum.

We report on the characteristic anion-exchange behavior of the superheavy element dubnium (Db) with atomic number Z = 105 in HF/HNO$$_{3}$$ solution at the fluoride ion concentration [F$$^{-}$$] = 0.003 M. The result clearly demonstrates that the fluoro complex formation of Db is significantly different from that of the group-5 homologue Ta in the 6th period of the periodic table while the behavior of Db is similar to that of the lighter homologue Nb in the 5th period.

Anion-exchange chromatography of element 105, dubnium (Db), produced in the $$^{248}$$Cm($$^{19}$$F, 5n)$$^{262}$$Db reaction is investigated together with the homologues Nb and Ta, and the pseudo-homologue Pa in 13.9 M hydrofluoric acid (HF) solution. The distribution coefficient (K$$_{d}$$) of Db on an anion-exchange resin is successfully determined by running cycles of the 1702 chromatographic column separations. The result clearly indicates that the adsorption of Db on the resin is significantly different from that of the homologues and that the adsorption of anionic fluoro complexes of these elements decreases in the sequence of Ta $$approx$$ Nb $$>$$ Db $$geq$$ Pa.

Fluoride complexation of element 104, rutherfordium (Rf), produced in the $$^{248}$$Cm($$^{18}$$O,5n)$$^{261}$$Rf reaction has been studied by anion-exchange chromatography on an atom-at-a-time scale. The anion-exchangechromatographic behavior of Rf was investigated in 1.9-13.9 M hydrofluoric acid together with those of the group-4 elements Zr and Hf produced in the $$^{18}$$O-induced reactions on Ge and Gd targets, respectively. It was found that the adsorption behavior of Rf on anion-exchange resin is quite different from those of Zr and Hf, suggesting the influence of relativistic effect on the fluoride complexation of Rf.

Dubnium-262 was produced in the $$^{248}$$Cm($$^{19}$$F, 5${it n}$) reaction at the JAEA tandem accelerator. Adsorption of Db on the anion-exchange resin was investigated in 0.89 M HF/0.3 M HNO$$_{3}$$ solution. The anion-exchange behavior of Nb, Ta, and Pa as homologues of Db was also examined in details in HF/HNO$$_{3}$$ solutions. From the comparison of those results, we found that the adsorption of Db on the anion-exchange resin is considerably weaker than that of Ta and is relatively similar to those of Nb and Pa in the studied conditions.

Anion-exchange behavior of $$^{262}$$Db (half-life ${it T$_{1/2}$}$ = 34 s) produced in the $$^{248}$$Cm($$^{19}$$F, 5${it n}$) reaction at the JAEA tandem accelerator was investigated in the mixed 0.89 M HF/0.3 M HNO$$_{3}$$ solution ([F$$^{-}$$] = 3 $$times$$ 10$$^{-3}$$ M) with the automated ion-exchange separation apparatus coupled with the detection system for alpha-spectroscopy (AIDA). Anion-exchange behavior of its lighter homologues, Nb and Ta, was also studied under the same conditions using $$^{88}$$Nb (${it T$_{1/2}$}$ = 14.3 min) and $$^{170}$$Ta (${it T$_{1/2}$}$ = 6.76 min) produced in the $$^{nat}$$Ge($$^{19}$$F, ${it xn}$) and $$^{nat}$$Gd($$^{19}$$F, ${it xn}$) reactions, respectively. It was found that the adsorption probability on the anion-exchange resin is in the order of Ta $$>$$ Nb $$sim$$ Db under the present condition.

Dubnium-262 was produced in the nuclear reaction of $$^{248}$$Cm($$^{19}$$F,5n)$$^{262}$$Db using the JAEA Tandem accelerator. The reaction products were rapidly transported to the chemistry laboratory and the anion-exchange behavior of Db in HF/HNO$$_{3}$$ media was investigated with an on-line rapid ion-exchange apparatus. Based on the comparison of the behavior of Db with that of its homologues (Nb, Ta, and Pa), the fluoride complex formation of Db was discussed.
