We have developed measurement and analysis techniques in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. To begin with, time-division depth profiles of gate stacked film interfaces have been achieved by NAP-HARPES (Near Ambient Pressure Hard X-ray Angle-Resolved Photo Emission Spectroscopy) data. We then have promoted our methods to quickly perform peak fittings and depth profiling from time-division ARPES data, which enables us to realize 4D-XPS analysis. It is found that the traditional maximum entropy method (MEM) combined with Jackknife averaging of sparse modeling in NAP-HARPES data is effective to perform dynamic measurement of depth profiles with high precision.

It was found that MIDOA can extract not only Cr(VI), Mo(VI), W(VI), Tc(VII) and Re(VII), whose metals can form the oxonium anions due to their high oxidation states, but also other metal cations, like Nb(V), Ta(V) and Pd(II). Analogous compounds, imino-bis--dioctylacetamide (IDOA) and methylimino-bis--di-2-ethylhexylacetamide (MIDEHA), are synthesized and compared for their extractability. It is clear that these extractants have almost same or lower values than those for MIDOA. In order to examine the effect on extractability with different donor atoms, TODGA (-tetraoctyl-diglycolamide) and TDGA (-tetraoctyl-tyiodiglycolamide) having oxygen and sulfur donor are employed. The comparison of their extractabilities suggests that the trend of Pd and Re extraction is N S O and N O S, respectively.

The results from H-NMR and EXAFS provide therefore evidence of M(VII)O...HMIDOA complex formation in the organic solution. The IR spectra of Re(VII)O...HMIDOA and Tc(VII)O...HMIDOA were analyzed based on the structures and the IR spectra calculated at the B3LYP/cc-pVDZ level. Comparison of the observed and calculated IR spectra demonstrates that an intramolecular hydrogen bond is formed in HMIDOA and the M(VII)O ion interact with HMIDOA through multiple C-H...O hydrogen bonds.

When the amplification conditions were fulfilled, strong enhancement of the radiation intensity by a factor of 650 was observed. The random and uncontrollable spikes, which appeared in the spectra of the Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) based FEL radiation without the seeding source, were found to be suppressed drastically to form to a narrow-band, single peak profile at 61.2 nm. The properties of the seeded FEL radiation were well reproduced by numerical simulations. We discuss the future precept of the seeded FEL scheme to the shorter wavelength region.

The new diamide-type extractant, 2,2-(Imino)bis(-dialkylacetamide) (IDAA), was developed for Tc recovery. IDAA has a nitrogen donor atom introduced into the center of backbone and shows the tridentate feature by hybrid donor atoms of two carbonyl oxygen and a nitrogen. 2,2-(Methylimino)bis(-Dioctylacetamide) (MIDOA), 2,2-(Methylimino)bis(-Didodecylacetamide) (MIDDA), and 2,2-(Imino)bis(-Didodecylacetamide) (IDDA), the IDAA derivatives, can be dissolved well in n-dodecane, and are readily used in the solvent extraction. In addition to Tc(VII) and Re(VII), Cr(VI), Mo(VI), W(VI), Pd(II) and Pu(IV) can be extracted from nitric acid to n-dodecane by these extractants, therefore IDAA has high extractability with some oxonium anions. The extraction capacity for Re(VII) was measured and more than 37 mM Re(VII) can be extracted by 0.1 M MIDOA.

An atomic model of Sn is developed on the basis of calculated atomic data using the Hebrew University Lawrence Livermore Atomic Code (HULLAC). Resonance and satellite lines from singly and multiply excited states of Sn ions are identified. The wavelengths of the 4-4 + 4-4 transitions of Sn to Sn are investigated. Results of calculation are compared with those of the charge exchange spectroscopy, measurement of the emission spectrum of the laser produced plasma EUV source, and the opacity measurement of a radiatively heated Sn sample. A reasonable agreement is observed between calculated and experimental EUV emission spectra. The spectral emissivity and opacity of Sn plasmas are calculated using a full collisional radiative (CR) model as a function of electron temperature and ion density.

In charge exchange collisions, we observed both the resonance lines and the emission lines corresponding to the transitions between the excited states. On the other hand, we observed mainly the resonance lines in the electron impact experiments. We can distinguish the resonance lines from other emission lines in the charge exchange spectrum by comparison with the emission lines in the electron impact spectrum.

The well known dense spectral structure around 13.5 nm is measured when the plasma is rapidly cooled and approaching radioactive collapse, while the sparse spectrum with several unidentified discrete lines from 13.8-14.6 nm is observed if the plasma is cooled more slowly. The dominant charge states in the former case are Sn -Sn. The latter case may be explained by considering the spectral lines from charge states higher than Sn.

Target vessel materials used in spallation neutron source will be exposed to proton and neutron irradiation and mercury immersion environments. In order to evaluate the surface degradation of the vessel candidate materials due to such environment, the triple-ion beam irradiation taking the spallation reaction into account and mercury immersion tests were carried out. Mechanical properties of the gradient surface layer ware evaluated by the inverse analysis with multi-layer model that considers distribution of surface characteristic was applied to the load and depth curves measured by using the instrumented indentation machine. Transmission electron microscopic observations ware performed to evaluate the changes of microstructure in irradiated surface layer using focused ion-beam cut micro-specimen. It was confirmed that the ductility loss is enhanced by the irradiation and mercury immersion, and simulated stress and strain curves of the ion-irradiated surface layer ware adequately in good agreement with the curves of experimental equivalent neutron-irradiated material.

Connection of hydrogen production system by steam reforming of methane to the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) has been surveyed until now. Mock-up test facility of this steam reforming system with full-scale reaction tube was constructed in FY 2001, and a lot of operational test data on heat exchanges were obtained in these tests. In this report specifications, structures and heat transfer formulae of steam reformer, steam superheater, steam generator, condenser, helium gas cooler, feed gas heater and feed gas superheater were described. Evaluation codes were newly made to evaluate heat transfer characteristics from measured test data. Overall heat-transfer coefficient obtained from the experimental data were compared and evaluated with the prospective value calculated with heat transfer formulae. As a result, heat transfer performance and thermal efficiency of these heat exchangers were confirmed to be appropriate.
