New insights into the Cs adsorption on montmorillonite clay from $$^{133}$$Cs solid-state NMR and density functional theory calculations

The structures of Cs adsorption on montmorillonite were investigated by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The NMR spectra of Cs adsorbed on montmorillonite samples were measured under different Cs contents and relative humidity levels. NMR parameters were evaluated by the first principle calculations in order to identify the relationship between adsorbed Cs structures and NMR parameters. The comparisons between experimental and theoretical NMR spectra revealed that Cs is preferentially adsorbed at sites near Al for low Cs substituted montmorillonites, and that non-hydrated Cs present in partially Cs substituted samples, even after being hydrated under high relative humidity.

Local structure analysis of ZrN, and Dy$$_{0.5}$$Zy$$_{0.5}$$N surrogate materials for fast reactor nitride fuel

ZnN is a possible candidate for the diluent material for nitride fuels containing transuranium elements. Pellets of inert matrix material ZrN, and surrogate nitride fuel material Dy$$_{0.5}$$Zr$$_{0.5}$$N, are fabricated for the purpose of investigating the crystal structure. Lattice parameters of Dy$$_{1-x}$$Zr$$_x$$N followed the Vegard's low, in spite of the large lattice mismatch ($$sim$$ 7%) between DyN and ZrN. Local structure analysis was performed by X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and atomic pair-distribution function (PDF) methods. The Zr-N nearest neighbor bond distance changed as changing the Dy composition. The complex local structure of DyN and ZrN is related to the preferable effects of ZrN.

High intensity laser-plasma interaction has attracted considerable interest for a number of years. The laser-plasma interaction is accompanied by generation of various charged particle beams. Results of simultaneous novel measurements of electron-induced photonuclear neutrons (photoneutron), which are a diagnostic of the laser-plasma interaction, are proposed to use for optimization of the laser-plasma ion generation. The proposed method is demonstrated by the laser irradiation with the intensity os 1$$times$$10$$^{21}$$ W/cm$$^{2}$$ on the metal foil target. The photoneutrons are measured by using NE213 liquid scintillation detectors. Heavy-ion signal is registered with the CR39 track detector simultaneously. The measured signals of the electron-induced photoneutrons are well reproduced by using the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS). The results obtained provide useful approach for analyzing the various laser based ion beams.

Behavior of very small amount of metallic ion in molten alkali chloride mixture melt is very important information in pyrochemical reprocessing of spent nuclear fuels. In the present work, mixing behavior of molten LaCl$$_3$$ in LiCl-KCl eutectic melt was simulated by molecular dynamics simulations. It has been reported that molten pure LaCl$$_3$$ has an 8-fold (LaCl$$_8$$)$$^{5-}$$ structure. The coordination number decreases by mixing with LiCl-KCl eutectic mixture melt and indicates a value close to 6 less than 31%LaCl$$_3$$ composition. It suggests that molten LaCl$$_3$$ has an octahedral coordination structure in the mixture, as shown in molten YCl$$_3$$ systems. In the MD simulation, the mixing effect was different between LiCl and KCl. It is due to high number density of Cl$$^-$$ ion in molten LiCl comparable to molten LaCl$$^3$$ and strong Coulomb force introduced by a small Li$$^+$$ ion.

${it Ex-situ}$ X-ray diffraction measurements of a small amount of samples extracted from wet corrosion products freshly formed on a pure iron and iron-2 mass% silicon surfaces have been conducted using synchrotron radiation. The results showed that $$gamma$$-FeOOH was formed on the outer side of wet corrosion products formed on the pure iron by sodium chloride solution, while $$gamma$$-FeOOH, $$alpha$$-FeOOH, Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$, and green rusts were formed on the inner side. In comparison to the case of the pure iron, a significant formation of $$beta$$-FeOOH was observed in the iron-silicon alloy. Furthermore, in-situ diffraction measurements by a conventional X-ray source were conducted for analyzing corrosion products formed on the pure iron and iron-silicon alloy surfaces by cyclic exposure to wet and dry atmospheres. The results obtained by the ${it in-situ}$ diffraction and ${it ex-situ}$ diffraction measurements on the corrosion products were consistent.

In-service inspection (ISI) is carried out to confirm the integrity of the main components of the Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR) "MONJU". The reactor vessel (RV) is the most important component of the FBR. Using the RV-ISI device it is conducted a visual test along the weld line of the reactor vessel. The inspection is carried out using a CCD camera for visual tests at elevated temperature (200 deg.) and high irradiation dose condition (10Sv/hr). Presently, the manufacture of the new device was ended and the performance test is carried out. This paper describes the result of the performance test using a mockup.

In JAEA, the high energy ions generated by the interaction between Ultra-intense Ultra-Short pulse laser and thin-foil target is being studied. Irradiating condition must be optimized to generate higher energy ions while suppress the becoming gigantic of laser. It is necessary to know the physical phenomenon in plasma to determine the parameter to optimize from the information on the electron and neutron, X-rays, which are generated simultaneously with ion. In this study, in order to measure electron temperature accurately, an electron spectrometer was developed which have broad range (1-200 MeV). The detector is comprised of permanent magnets and a fluorescent plate, CCD camera. In the presentation, the result of the calibration experiment carried out using 4, 9, 12, 15 MeV quasi-monoenergetic electron beam in HIBMC will be reported. Moreover, response analysis method was inspected using PHITS which is particle transporting Monte Carlo simulation code, and will also report the result.

The NMR spectra of Cs adsorbed montmorillonite samples with different Cs contents were collected by $$^{133}$$Cs Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) NMR and $$^{133}$$Cs Triple Quantum (3Q) MAS NMR. The adsorbed Cs structures were evaluated based on the correlations between the structural characteristics and the values of the NMR parameters predicted by the first principal calculations.
