Nb$$_{3}$$Al cable-in-conduit (CIC) conductors have been developed as one of candidates for the fusion DEMO reactor. The performances of superconducting strands in the CIC conductor are affected by transverse electromagnetic force and thermal strain at reaction heat treatment. In order to accurately design the conductors for the fusion DEMO reactor, the performance evaluation of the Nb$$_{3}$$Al strands, which is processed by a rapid heating, quenching and transformation (RHQT) method, was performed under various temperature, magnetic field and axial-strain conditions. The measured and parameterized results of the Nb$$_{3}$$Al strands are presented.

Conductor procurement for ITER Toroidal Field (TF) coils in Japan has just stated in the spring of 2008 under agreement with ITER organization. Before the activity, each Nb$$_{3}$$Sn conductor must be tested at SULTAN facility in Switzerland for qualification of the conductor. The TF conductor is cable-in-conduit type with about 40 mm outer diameter and is composed of 900 Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strands, 522 Cu strands, a central spiral and a 316LN tube. Required performance of the conductor is Tcs of 5.7 K at 68 kA and 11.3 T, which is operating condition of TF coils. Japan has four Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strand suppliers for ITER and two of them were already tested as Japanese 1st and 2nd SULTAN samples. This paper shows test results of 3rd Japanese SULTAN sample using Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strands fabricated by resting two suppliers.

A special type of 7 T 240 mm vertical bore cryogen-free superconducting magnet system was developed. The magnet system consists of three sets of coils which are charged separately. A set of sweep coils are located inside of the main coil. The sweep coil produces only $$pm$$0.2 T but is charged and discharged within 10 seconds so as to control electron trajectory. To avoid quench with the rise of the temperature from the large AC loss, this set of coils are wound with Nb$$_{3}$$Sn conductor. This magnet system will contribute to the fast control of the gyrotron oscillation frequency.

Cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) using Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strands will be used in ITER toroidal field (TF) coils. The TF conductors is applied the thermal strain, which is due to the difference of the thermal expansion between the Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strands and the stainless steel jacket, and the electromagnetic force at excitation. In order to use for basic data of the evaluation of the TF conductors, the performance evaluation in Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strands subjected to axial-strain is carried out. In this paper, the experimental apparatus and the measured results are reported.

ITER TF conductors will be procured by 6 parties, which are Japan, EU, Korea, Russia, US and China. Japan will procure 25% (4.75 coils) of the TF conductors. 100 tons of Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strands will be procured by JA for the TF conductors and total length of the conductor shall be 22 km. ITER organization and JAEA have signed agreement to procure the TF conductor last November. JAEA separated the procurement into three categories, which are strand, cable and conductor procurements. Before the procurement, JAEA has evaluated performance of 4 kinds of full size conductors, each of which uses Nb$$_{3}$$Sn strands fabricated by respective Japanese company. Test results of 2 kinds of conductors were presented last year. This time, test results of other conductors will be presented.
