The risks of low dose ionizing irradiation ( 100 mSv) have been estimated using a linear no-threshold model by extrapolating from data obtained after high dose irradiation. The validity of this dose-response model is, however, controversial because evidence accumulated for over the past decade has shown that response of living organisms including humans to low dose/low dose-rate radiation is different from that to high dose/high dose-rate radiation. In another words, findings that cannot be explained by the classical "target theory" of radiobiology have accumulated. The radiation-induced adaptive response, bystander effects, low-dose radio-hypersensitivity, and genomic instability are specifically observed in response to low dose/low dose-rate radiation, and underpinnings of these responses often involve biochemical/molecular signals responding to targeted and non-targeted events. Recently, interrelations between the radioadaptive and bystander responses have been increasingly reported. We review observations supporting the existence of the latter two phenomena, and discuss the possible link between them from the aspect of production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species.

The Fusion Council of Japan has established the long-term research and development program of the blanket in 1999. In the program, the solid breeder blanket was selected as the primary candidate blanket of the fusion power demonstration plant in Japan. In the program, Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) has been nominated as a leading institute of the development of solid breeder blankets, in collaboration with universities, for the near term power demonstration plant, while, universities including National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS) are assigned mainly to develop advanced blankets for longer term power plant development. In the long term research and development program, ITER blanket module testing is identified as the most important milestone, by which integrity of candidate blanket concepts and structures are evaluated. In Japan, universities, NIFS and JAERI cover a variety of types of blanket development. This paper presents a plan and strategy for ITER blanket module testing in Japan.

Development of a radiation survey meter for space exploration

A novel survey meter for application to future interplanetary exploration has been developed. It is expected that the survey meter will measure separately exact doses of various cosmic-ray particles at any places even on the ground of moon and Mars. This feature surpasses those of other onboard active monitors or present crew personal dosimeters.
