The femtosecond (fs) laser induced alignment of molecules including a heavy atom is severely disturbed by ionization because of their small ionization potential. Our simulations for IBr and IBr isotopologues demonstrate that the switched ns laser field can make isotopologues well-aligned with the reduced ionization probability at the laser intensity which is an order-of-magnitude lower than a typical intensity for field-free alignment induced by a fs laser field.

Field-free alignment can be achieved simultaneously for two isotopologues consisting of two atoms with the same atomic mass number or , utilizing a pulse train with their time interval of T = T() = T(), where T() and T() are the rotational revival times of the isotopologues. We demonstrate experimentally that a train of four alignment pulses with their interval of T ( = 14, = 15) creates transiently aligned N and anti-aligned N just before T/2 after the last pulse, and vice versa just after T/2. Highly isotope-selective N ionization is achieved at these timings with another femtosecond laser pulse, which induces the non-resonant multiphoton ionization with the cross section remarkably depending on the angle between the molecular axis and the laser electric field direction. The ion yield ratio I(N)/I(N) ranges from 0.49 to 2.00, which is wider than the range obtained with single alignment pulse.

Herein, EB-induced initial reactions of ZEP520A were investigated via pulse radiolysis (EB energy: 28 MeV, time resolution: 10 ns). Dissociative electron attachment and formation of a charge transfer complex were definitive contributing factors to the efficient degradation of ZEP520A. Furthermore, products induced by direct ionization of ZEP520A were observed in a highly concentrated ZEP520A solution in tetrahydrofuran, suggesting that initial reactions in the ZEP520A solid film that are induced only by direct ionization could be simulated via pulse radiolysis in specific solutions.

From numerical simulations of the amplification processes of high-order harmonic pulses in the undulator, optimum conditions of the electron bunch duration interacting with the high-order harmonic pulses were investigated for generating full-coherent and intense pulses in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength region.

To evaluate permeable heterogeneity in a fracture and scale effects which are problems to be solved based on the mass transportation data of fractures in hostrock, a number of tracer tests are simulated in a fictitious single plate fracture generated on computer in this study. And the transport parameters, e.g. longitudinal dispersion length, true velocity and dilution rate, are identified by fitting one- and two-dimensional models to the breakthrough curves obtained from the simulations in order to investigate the applicability of these models to the evaluation of tracer test. As a result, one-dimensional model yields larger longitudinal dispersion length than two-dimensional model in the both cases of homogeneous and heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity fields of the fictitious fracture. And, the longitudinal dispersion length identified from a tracer test is smaller and/or larger than the macroscopic longitudinal dispersion length identified from whole fracture. It is clarified that these are occurred by shorter or longer distance between boreholes compare to the correlation length of geostatistical heterogeneity of fictitious fracture.

A linearly-polarized short laser pulse (795 nm, 60 fs) creates rotational wave packets in the isotopomers, which periodically revive with different revival times as a result of different moments of inertia. Another linearly-polarized short laser pulse (795 nm, 60 fs) ionizes one of the isotopomers selectively as a result of their different angular distributions. In the present experiments, the ion yield ratio [= (N)/(N)] can be changed in the range from 0.85 to 1.22, depending on the time delay between the two laser pulses.

The 13th harmonic of a Ti:sapphire laser has been significantly amplified with the SCSS test accelerator. The temporal and spatial overlap of the electron beam and the high harmonic radiation were precisely tuned for achieving the seeded free electron laser operation. With numerical simulation the present HH-seeded FEL scheme could readily be applied to the wavelength region down to 10 nm.

Surface sediments around mounds were collected from the Wakamiko submarine crater located in Kagoshima Bay, southwest Japan, where the hydrothermal system was different from those at other marine shallow-water hydrothermal mounds. All samples were desalted and MPGA measurements were performed for 4,500 s (real time). Event data were obtained using eight CLOVER Ge detectors. We could obtain concentrations of S, Mn, As, Gd, K, Sm, Fe, and Rb with high sensitivity by MPGA. Furthermore, S, Rb, and Mn have characteristic concentrations only at a mound, suggesting that sediments were sulfated by magmatic fluids at this mound.

The knowledge of the interaction between organic molecules and semiconductor surfaces plays an important role in adapting organic semiconductors into the semiconductor technology. In the present study, the process of -sexithiophene (-6T) thin layer formation on passivated silicon (Si) surfaces has been investigated in-situ by means of PES, angle-depended NEXAFS (near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure), SDRS, and RDS. For water-adsorbed Si(001), it was found that the majority of -6T molecules are standing on the substrate. Above 3 nm, most of molecules are standing and constitute well ordered islands or films. For ethylene adsorbed Si(001) on the contrary, some of -6T molecules are flat-lying, resulting in less prominent orientation. Thus, the orientation of molecules depends on the method of passivation, which opens the possibility of controlling the molecular orientation by the surface modification.

Stacked Poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-hexafluoropropylene) (FEP) films were irradiated by Xe ion beam with the energy of 6 MeV/u under a vacuum condition. Irradiated films were grafted with styrene monomer and then sulfonated. The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) fabricated by the function graded PEM showed improved fuel cell performance in terms of voltage stability. It was expected that the function-graded PEM could control the graded concentration of sulfonic acid groups in PEM.
