PLANET is a high-pressure neutron beamline constructed at pulsed-neutron source in Materials and Life Science Facility (MLF) in J-PARC. The six-axis multi-anvil press designed for time of flight (TOF) neutron diffraction experiments enables routine data collection at high pressures and high temperatures up to 10 GPa and 2000 K, respectively. To obtain clean data, the beamline is equipped with the incident slits and receiving collimators that eliminate parasitic scattering from the high-pressure cell. The high performance of the diffractometer for the resolution ($$Delta d/d$$ $$sim$$ 0.6%) and the accessible d-spacing range (0.2 - 8.4 ${AA}$) together with low-parasitic scattering characteristics enables precise structure determination of crystals and liquids under high pressure and temperature conditions.

In the J-PARC Linac, an energy upgrade project has started since 2009 using Annular-ring Coupled Structure cavities to achieve design beam power of 1 MW at the exit of the downstream rapid cycling synchrotron. Linac beam parameters of the upgraded Linac is drastically improved especially for the beam energy from 181 to 400 MeV in the project. To meet with the significant upgrades of the Linac, beam monitors to be used for the upgraded beam line are newly designed and fabricated as well as the beam monitor layout is designed with the consideration to the beam commissioning strategies. This paper introduces the beam monitor layout in the new beam line and the commissioning results to confirm the beam monitor functioning.

In J-PARC Linac, an energy upgrade project has started since 2009 using Annular-ring Coupled Structure (ACS) cavities. We have decided to use the bunch shape monitors (BSM) as the monitors of the longitudinal beam width measurement in order to take the longitudinal matching using two bunchers located in the upstream of ACS cavities, where the RF frequency jumps from 324 to 972 MHz. Three BSMs were completely fabricated and installed in the beam line. The BSMs were commissioned with the beam and their operability was demonstrated. We found the vacuum degradation during the measurement. We once removed all BSMs to have a vacuum conditioning and postponed the longitudinal matching at the establishment of 400-MeV operation of the energy upgraded Linac. In this paper, we introduce the mechanism of the BSM, its operability, the measurement results with the 181 MeV beam and consistency check with the respect cavity amplitude. We also describe the operational vacuum conditions and the outline of the improvement of the vacuum system for the BSMs.

Miura, Akihiko; Kawane, Yusuke; Ouchi, Nobuo; Miyao, Tomoaki*

Proceedings of 3rd International Beam Instrumentation Conference (IBIC 2014) (Internet), p.430 - 434, 2015/04

Bunch shape monitors (BSMs) have been developed and installed in the summer of 2012 at the beginning of new Annular-ring Coupled Structure Linac (ACS) section. Because a problem of the vacuum degradation was found during the BSM operations, BSMs were once dismounted from the beam line and the off-line baking operations with outgas analysis had been performed to reduce the vacuum pressure of BSM surrounding. The impacts of the bias voltage to the target wire and static lens, and the RF power to the deflector were examined in the vacuum test. Finally, we propose the additional vacuum system arrangement for the installation of BSM to the beam line. This paper describes the vacuum test results of BSMs and the additional vacuum system arrangement for the BSM installation.

In J-PARC Linac, an energy upgrade project has started to achieve the design beam power of 1 MW at the exit of downstream synchrotron. To meet with significant upgrades of the beam parameters, beam monitors used for the beam commissioning are modified and fabricated. We discuss how to design and assemble the beam monitors for the upgraded Linac. We delivered them for the new upgraded beam line periodically and newly fabricated monitors for the longitudinal matching are also delivered because of the frequency jump between original RF cavity and newly developed cavity. Finally we suppose the commissioning plans to support the monitor check.

Proceedings of 10th International Workshop on Personal Computers and Particle Accelerator Controls (PCaPAC 2014) (Internet), p.193 - 195, 2015/02

J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) consists of much equipment. In Linac and 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron ring (RCS), the data of over the 64,000 EPICS records for these equipment has been collected. The Data volume is about 2 TB in every year, and the stored total data volume is about 10 TB. The data have been being stored by a Relational Data Base (RDB) system using PostgreSQL, but it is not enough in availability, performance, and capability to increase of data volume flexibility. Hadoop/HBase, which is known as a distributed, scalable and big data store, has been proposed for our next-generation archive system to solve these problems. The test system was built and verified about data transition or database utilization. This report shows the current status of the new archive system, and its advantages and problems which have been obtained through our verification.

Miura, Akihiko; Ouchi, Nobuo; Oguri, Hidetomo; Hasegawa, Kazuo; Maruta, Tomofumi*; Liu, Y.*; Miyao, Tomoaki*; Ikegami, Masanori*

Proceedings of 27th International Linear Accelerator Conference (LINAC 2014) (Internet), p.1059 - 1061, 2014/12

An energy upgrade project has started in the J-PARC Linac since 2009. In the upgraded project, beam energy in the Linac has increased from original 181 MeV to 400 MeV using the additional 21 Annular-ring Coupled Structure Linac (ACS) cavities. The new beam monitors as the beam current monitors, the phase monitors, the beam position monitors and the transverse profile monitors (wire scanner monitors) were designed and fabricated. By the end of November, 2013, all beam monitors were completely installed. From the middle of December, we started the beam commissioning to achieve the beam energy as 400 MeV, as well as to confirm the beam monitor functioning. We achieved the 400 MeV beam acceleration at the middle of January, 2014 using newly installed beam monitors. This paper describes the beam monitor installation and the beam commissioning results of beam monitor functioning.

Calibration of phase detector using IQ modulator

Miyao, Tomoaki*; Miura, Akihiko; Kawane, Yusuke*; Ouchi, Nobuo

Proceedings of 11th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.718 - 720, 2014/10

The beam energy of the J-PARC Linac is calculated by TOF (Time-of-Flight) method with the flight distance and the beam phases measured at the two phase monitors. Because the accuracy of the beam energy calculation is directly depending on the errors in the phase measurement system, all beam phase monitors are calibrated annually. We have decided to use an IQ modulator circuit to realize the high accurate calibration and to reduce the calibration time. We describe the original and new procedure of the energy calculation in this paper.

Proceedings of 11th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.1288 - 1291, 2014/10

In the J-PARC Linac, because an upgrading of a beam current up to 50mA using an RF-driven ion source and a new RFQ Linac cavity is in progress, we have developed a new frontend equipments. In order to protect the scraper against 50 mA, we need to observe the temperature and to avoid the excess heat loading of the scraper surface and to count the irradiated beam particles. We also monitor the beam transmission between the upstream and downstream of the chopper cavity to check the chopping errors using the beam current monitors. We fabricated the interlock system for the temperature, irradiated particle numbers and beam transmission. And we tested them in the test stand with actual beam. This paper describes the interlock system and their test results.

The radiation leak accident happened in the hadron experimental hall of J-PARC on May 23, 2013. The accident was caused by a target sublimation due to an unanticipated beam from the 50 GeV main ring (MR). To detect and prevent the radiation leakage in all facilities of J-PARC, we improve the machine protection system (MPS). In the J-PARC 3GeV synchrotron (Rapid Cycling Synchrotron, RCS), a monitoring system of an abnormal state of the extraction beam to the mercury target of material life science experiment facility (MLF) were prepared. The radiation level of the gas in the tunnel were able to always observed by connecting radiation safety system and accelerator control system. The dump temperature was included in the MPS. We also developed new interlock system that can stop the beam immediately when the beam current exceed the limit.

Proceedings of 10th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.731 - 734, 2014/06

The data acquisition in J-PARC LINAC/RCS are two methods of data archiving of polling data via EPICS Channel Access and synchronized waveform data. The synchronized waveform data are collected by several Wave Endless Recorders (WER). The WER counts the trigger number and holds waveform data in a ring buffer memory. We developed a Trigger Counter in order to manage the trigger number of each WER and synchronize the trigger number of each WER via LAN. At present, in order to install the waveform data synchronization system, we carried out verification using the timing test bench. This report presents about the waveform data synchronization system and future plan of the data acquisition system.

The installation of Cs-seeded RF-driven H$$^{-}$$ ion source (RF ion source) to J-PARC LINAC is scheduled in 2014. Similarly the replacement of RFQ III from RFQ is scheduled in 2014. The test stand of the cooperation of RF ion source & RFQ III is being made in the J-PARC LINAC building for the beam acceleration examination now. The J-PARC control group designed test stand control system by thinking that test stand control system had to be equal to J-PARC accelerator control system. Specifically, Introduction of MPS for protect an apparatus. Implementation of EPICS environment for remotely controlling the equipment. It is construction of the timing system for sending a timing signal to each accelerator component device. This report describes construction of the control system in a test stand.

Miura, Akihiko; Feschenko, A. V.*; Mirzojan, A. N.*; Miyao, Tomoaki*; Ouchi, Nobuo; Oguri, Hidetomo; Hasegawa, Kazuo; Ikegami, Masanori*

Proceedings of 10th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.705 - 708, 2014/06

In J-PARC linac, a project for energy and intensity upgrade has been progressed since 2009 using Annular-ring Coupled Structure (ACS) cavities. Because the longitudinal matching of the injection beam to the ACS cavities is required as well as the transverse matching, we decided to employ the bunch shape monitors (BSM's) to measure the longitudinal beam profile. We developed three BSM's in collaboration with INR (Institute for Nuclear Research: Russia) for the upstream part of the ACS section. We introduce the structure of BSM and mention the measured results taken during the commissioning of BSM.

Design study of J-PARC timing system for nuclear transmutation experimental facility

Ito, Yuichi; Kawase, Masato; Kikuzawa, Nobuhiro; Ouchi, Nobuo

Proceedings of 9th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.738 - 740, 2013/08

A transmutation experimental facility (TEF) is planned in J-PARC 2nd construction phase. 400 MeV/250 kW of negative hydrogen ion beam will be delivered from LINAC to TEF. The LINAC is now operating in repetition of 25 Hz and LINAC should be operated in 50 Hz to keep beam power for existing experimental facilities. The timing system should also be operated in 50 Hz. However, some control subsystems and data acquisition subsystems are strongly optimized for 25 Hz operation especially in RCS. A design for J-PARC timing system to support TEF will be discussed in this report.
