Current ramps in tokamaks; From present experiments to ITER scenarios

In order to prepare adequate current ramp-up and ramp-down scenarios for ITER, present experiments from several tokamaks have been analyzed by means of integrated modeling in view of determining relevant heat transport models for these operation phases. The results of these studies are presented and projections to ITER current ramp-up and ramp-down scenarios are done, focusing on the baseline inductive scenario (main heating plateau current of 15 MA). Various transport models have been tested by means of integrated modeling against experimental data from ASDEX Upgrade, C-Mod, DIII-D, JET and Tore Supra, including both Ohmic plasmas and discharges with additional heating/current drive. With using the most successful models, projections to the ITER current ramp-up and ramp-down phases are carried out. Though significant differences between models appear on the electron temperature prediction, the final q-profiles reached in the simulation are rather close.

ITER operational scenarios with the high field side pellet fuelling are considered. The possibility of reducing the energy losses per edge localised mode (ELM) to an acceptable level is discussed. Requirements on the pellet fuelling system for desirable ELM energy reduction are obtained. Self-consistent transport simulations of pellet fuelled scenarios reveal the possibility of the operation with moderate ELM losses, plasma density below Greenwald density, high energy multiplication factor Q$$sim$$20 and power across the separatrix above the L-H mode power threshold.

The values of Q = (fusion power)/(auxiliary heating power) predicted for ITER by three different methods are compared. The first method utilises an empirical confinement time scaling and prescribed radial profiles of transport coefficients, the second approach extrapolates from especially designed ITER similarity experiments, and the third approach is based on partly theory-based transport models. The energy confinement time given by the ITERH-98(y,2) scaling for an inductive scenario with plasma current of 15 MA and plasma density 15% below the Greenwald density is 3.7 s with one estimated technical standard deviation of 14%. This translates in the first approach into an interval for Q of [6-15] at the auxiliary heating power Paux = 40 MW and [6-30] at the minimum heating power satisfying a good confinement ELMy H-mode. Predictions of similarity experiments from JET and of theory-based transport models overlap with the prediction using the empirical confinement-time scaling within its estimated margin of uncertainty.
