Direct identification of magnetic surface by a differential double probe in JFT-2M

Data for detecting the magnetic flux surfaces at the edge plasma in tokamak are presented. When the magnetic surfaces are moved by the plasma jog, it is observed that a current increment appears in the two set of double probe whose front surfaces are shifted by a small distance and that the difference of these two currents through the differential amplifier giving a signal of the arrival of the separatrix also appears, where we refer the separatrix point as a typical position of the magnetic flux surfaces. It is confirmed that magnetic flux surfaces are located by a few cm outward from that calculated by the eqfit-code (EQFIT) and the absolute value of its deviation is identified. This identification is supported by the result of observation of the correlation of the floating potential fluctuation between two different points using one probe pin of the same differential double probe. The ion temperature and the space potential are observed by the another use of the differential double probe are modified following the estimated real magnetic surfaces positions.

The diagnostic system of JFT-2M has consisted of about 30 individual diagnostic instruments,which were used to study the plasma production, control, equilibrium, stability, confinement, plasma heating by NBI and/or RF (LH, ICRF, ECH) and current drive by RF. In these instruments, the motional Stark effect (MSE) polarimeter, charge exchanged recombination spectroscopy (CXRS), heavy-ion beam probe (HIBP), time of flight (TOF) neutral particle analyzer, etc. have contributed to make clear the improved mechanism of confinement such as H-mode and High Recycling Steady (HRS) H-mode, and to search the operational region of these modes.The infrared TV camera system and lost ion probe have played a very important role to investigate the heat load onto the walls due to ripple loss particles and escaping ions from core plasma, respectively.

Experimental efforts on JFT-2M have been devoted to understand SOL/Divertor plasmas and to investigate power and particle controllability. Open divertor configuration was used for the first decade of JFT-2M started in 1984. We found out the SOL/Divertor plasma properties such as in/out asymmetry, heat and particle diffusivities, and SOL current at ELMs. Handling of power and particle was demonstrated by active control methods such as local pumping, edge ergodization, divertor biasing, and edge heating. For improvement of power and particle control capability of divertor, it was modified to closed configuration in 1995, which demonstrated the baffling effects with narrower divertor throat. Dense and cold divertor state (n$$_{e}$$$$^{div}$$ = 4$$times$$10$$^{19}$$ m$$^{-3}$$ and T$$_{e}$$$$^{div}$$ = 4 eV), compatible with the improved confinement modes (e.g. H-mode), was realized by strong gas puffing. Being related with the core confinement at H-mode, the edge plasma fluctuations were identified by an electrostatic probe. These are reviewed in this paper.

The temperature and energy of electrons are important issues when energy and particle fluxes to the divertor are evaluated. To do this, we have analyzed the electron energy distribution function by differentiating the probe current with respect to the probe voltage numerically, where probe current has been measured in the divertor plasma of JT-60U. We have evaluated the electron temperature and the shape of the distribution function when the X point MARFE and the plasma detachment are formed.

Flight-type-probe for measuring hot core plasmas

In the hot and dense fusion plasma, the application of the electrostatic and/or magnetic probe is limited to such a localized region as the scrape off layer (SOL), since the conventional probe would be destroyed in the core plasma region due to the great heat damage and/or the electromagnetic force during the plasma disruption. In order to make the best use of probe methods having a high spatial and time resolution, we consider a flight-type-probe (FTP), in which the probe circuit and memory elements for the signal are installed in a capsule to be thrown into the core hot plasma from one side port with a very fast speed. The data acquired are transmitted through rf antenna to outside observers and/or are saved in the CPU memory elements to be analyzed after reproduction. The dimension of the FTP is designed as small as possible and the launching mechanism is used for a pellet injection or a rail gun. The preliminary design of the FTP is inspected in this issue.
