Magnetic excitations in a heavily electron-doped antiferromagnet, LaFeAsO$$_{0.5}$$D$$_{0.5}$$, have been investigated using powder inelastic neutron scattering. Unlike other parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors, the magnetic excitation gap in LaFeAsO$$_{0.5}$$D$$_{0.5}$$ was not detected down to the lowest measured temperature of 4 K. This result can be understood as a result of quasi-isotropy within the ab plane, which is consistent with the band calculation result that the $$d_{xy}$$ orbital plays the dominant role in the magnetism of LaFeAsO$$_{0.5}$$H$$_{0.5}$$. In addition, the intensities of the magnetic excitations in this phase are much stronger than those in nondoped LaFeAsO. Even in the paramagnetic phase, the magnetic excitation in LaFeAsO$$_{0.5}$$D$$_{0.5}$$ persists. These results corroborate recent studies showing that the electron doping enhances the localized nature in this system.

We report the first X-ray diffraction experiments of PrFe$$_{4}$$P$$_{12}$$ under high pressure. We discovered a symmetry lowering from cubic to orthorhombic or lower at the metal-insulator transition temperature, accompanied by a jump in the lattice constant, which indicates a first-order phase transition. The superlattice reflections at q=(1,0,0) observed in the low-pressure nonmagnetic ordered phase are found to disappear in the insulating phase. The temperature dependence of the lattice constant and the absence of the superlattice reflections are well explained by taking into account an antiferromagnetic ordering.

Magnetic and crystal structure of strong neutron absorber SmBaMn$$_{2}$$O$$_{6}$$

Manganites represented as RE$$_{1-x}$$AE$$_{x}$$MnO$$_{3}$$ (Re = trivalent rare earth, AE = divalent alkaline earth) has drawn great attention because of their fascinating and variety of physical properties. SmBaMn$$_{2}$$O$$_{6}$$ is one kind with Sm and Ba ordered at A-site. This material exhibit a charge-orbital ordering at 380K, another charge-orbital ordering and an antiferromagnetic phase transition around 200K, and an anomaly was also observed at 10K in a magnetic susceptibility data. In order to clarify the detail of the phase transition around 200K and 10K, a single crystal of SmBaMn$$_{2}$$O$$_{6}$$ was measured on the single crystal diffractometer at J-PARC/MLF, SENJU. The measurement revealed the existence of magnetic superlattice reflections below 180K, which indicated the CE-type spin ordering pattern, which is most commonly seen in this type of materials. A careful measurement of the superlattice reflections clarified that the charge-orbital ordering occurred slightly above the antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature.
