Measurement of the angular distribution of $$gamma$$-rays after neutron capture by $$^{139}$$La for a T-violation search

Parity violating effects enhanced by up to 10$$^6$$ times have been observed in several neutron induced compound nuclei. There is a theoretical prediction that time reversal (T) violating effects can also be enhanced in these nuclei implying that T-violation can be searched for by making very sensitive measurements. However, the enhancement factor has not yet been measured in all nuclei. The angular distribution of the (n,$$gamma$$) reaction was measured with $$^{139}$$La by using a germanium detector assembly at J-PARC, and the enhancement factor was obtained. From the result, the measurement time to achieve the most sensitive T-violation search was estimated as 1.4 days, and a 40% polarized $$^{139}$$La target and a 70% polarized $$^3$$He spin filter whose thickness is 70 atm$$cdot$$cm are needed. Therefore high quality $$^3$$He spin filter is developed in JAEA. The measurement result of the (n,$$gamma$$) reaction at J-PARC and the development status of the $$^3$$He spin filter will be presented.

It is necessary to establish practical evaluation methods to determine radioactivity concentrations of the important nuclides for safety assessment on disposal of radioactive wastes in order to dispose of low-level radioactive wastes generated from various nuclear facilities in JAEA. In this report, the practical evaluation methods such as the scaling factor method for JPDR facilities have been studied for disposal of the low-level radioactive wastes generated from nuclear reactor facilities in JAEA.

NMR determination of noncollinear antiferromagnetic structure in TbCoGa$$_5$$

We report NMR studies of TbCoGa$$_5$$, which has the tetragonal HoCoGa$$_5$$ structure and exhibits two antiferromagnetic (AF) transitions at $$T_{rm N1}$$=36.2 K and $$T_{rm N2}$$=5.4 K. From a symmetry analysis of internal magnetic fields at orthorhombic Ga sites, we have successfully determined the magnetic structures in the AF-I ($$T_{rm N2}<T<T_{rm N1}$$) and AF-II ($$T<T_{rm N2}$$) phases. The AF-I phase is a collinear AF order with a propagation vector $$q=[1/2, 0, 1/2]$$ and ordered moments parallel to the [001] direction. In the AF-II phase, on the other hand, we found a non-collinear AF structure described by double propagation vectors $$q_1=[1/2, 0, 1/2]$$ and $$q_{2}=[0, 1/2, 1/2]$$, where the moments tilt away from the [001] direction toward [100], keeping a constant value along the [001] direction. In the context of these results we discuss the possible presence of magnetic frustration in this system.

Simple and rapid methods to evaluate the radioactivity concentrations are required to be established for the near surface disposal of radioactive wastes generated from research facilities at Japan Atomic Energy Agency. In order to establish the methods to evaluate the radioactivity concentrations of miscellaneous solid wastes generated from research and testing reactors, we collected and analyzed samples from miscellaneous solid wastes generated by the decommissioning of JPDR (Japan Power Demonstration Reactor). In the present paper, we summarized data (262 data) about the radioactivity concentrations of the 7 important nuclides ($$^{3}$$H, $$^{14}$$C, $$^{60}$$Co, $$^{59}$$Ni, $$^{63}$$Ni, $$^{90}$$Sr, $$^{137}$$Cs) which accumulated by the analysis.

In order to establish the practical evaluation methods such as scaling factor method to determine the radioactivity concentrations of the important nuclides for safety assessment of disposal of radioactive wastes, we analyzed low-level radioactive liquid waste (56 samples), which is generated from various research facilities at Nuclear Science Research Institute from FY1998 to FY2007 and accumulated the radioactivity concentrations data (563 data) of the 17 important nuclides. We investigated the correlation of the radioactivity concentrations of the important nuclides with the "Key nuclides ($$^{60}$$Co or $$^{137}$$Cs)". In present paper, the radioactivity concentrations data of the 17 important nuclides and the results of the correlation of the radioactivity concentrations are summarized for the data to establish the practical evaluation methods to determine the radioactivity concentrations in asphalt-solidified or cement-solidified products.

Here we report the new features and improvements in our latest release of the H-Invitational Database, a comprehensive annotation resource for human genes and transcripts. H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

The injection system of the 3-GeV RCS in J-PARC is composed of four main orbit bump magnets (shift bump) to merge the injection beam with the circulating beam. The magnetic field design and the structural analysis of the shift bump magnets have been performed using 3D magnetic and mechanical codes. In this paper, the design of the bending magnets is reported.

Analysis of the uranyl nitrate solution fuel is carried out at the analytical laboratory of NUCEF(Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Research Facility), which provides essential data for operation of STACY(Static Experiment Critical Facility), TRACY(Transient Experiment Critical Facility)and the fuel treatment system. Analyzed in FY 2004 were uranyl nitrate solution fuel samples taker before and after experiments of STACY and TRACY, samples for the preparation of uranyl nitrate solution fuel, and samples for nuclear material accountancy purpose. Also analyzed were the samples from raffinate treatment and its preliminary tests. The raffinate was generated, since FY 2000, during preliminary experiments on U/Pu extraction-pulification to fix the operation condition to prepare plutonium solution fuel to be used for criticality experiments at STACY. The total number of the samples analyzed in FY 2004 was 160. This report summarizes works related to the analysis and management of the analytical laboratory in the FY 2004.

Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute has joined the international project, the Tunnel Sealing Experiment, to demonstrate the sealing performance of the full scale plugs in-situ, and to develop analytical method of the sealing performance of the plugs at the Underground Research Laboratory of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited in Canada. We performed the analysis of the sealing performance of the full scale plugs considering the monitored data on sealing performance of the plugs. In these analyses, stress analysis, hydraulic analysis and coupled stress-hydraulic analysis were performed to explain distribution of the pore pressure in host rock and seepage through plugs.Stress analysis showed the stress condition in host around the test tunnel. Hydraulic and coupled stress-hydraulic analyses showed the change with time of pore pressure and seepages considering schedules of opening of the test tunnel, installation of the plugs and pressurizing of the chamber. Since opening the test tunnel caused changes of the pore pressure in host rock around the test tunnel, the coupled stress-hydraulic analysis explained distribution of the pore pressure in the host rock around the test tunnel and seepage through plugs.

Criticality experiments using uranyl nitrate solution fuel are being conducted at STACY (the Static Experiment Critical Facility) and TRACY (the Transient Experiment Critical Facility) in NUCEF (the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Safety Engineering Research Facility). Chemical analyses of the solution have been carried out to take necessary data for criticality experiments, for treatment and control of the fuel, and for safeguards purpose at the analytical laboratory placed in NUCEF. About 300 samples are analyzed annually that provide various kinds of data, such as uranium concentration, isolation acid concentration, uranium isotopic composition, concentration of fission product (FP) nuclides, tri-butyl phosphoric acid (TBP) concentration, impurities in the solution fuel and so on. This report summarizes the analytical methods and quality management of the analysis for uranyl nitrate solution relating to the criticality experiments.

Analytical results of uranyl nitrate solution are essential data for the operation of the Static Experiment Critical Facility (STACY), the Transient Experiment Critical Facility (TRACY) and the fuel treatment system in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Safety Engineering Research Facility (NUCEF). Analytical works were carried out for the determination of fuel characteristics before and after criticality experiments, fuel preparation and nuclear material accountancy in FY. 2001. Moreover,as to preparation of critical experiments at STACY, plutonium preliminary tests were carried out to confirm the treatment condition (characteristics of the dissolution of the mixed oxide (MOX) powder and the extraction & separation for uranium / plutonium) of plutonium nitrate solution. Analytical works were carried out on the preliminary tests. A total number of analytical samples in FY. 2001 were 322 samples.This report summarizes the data on analytical works in FY.2001.

In the AF-II phase, on the other hand, we found a non-collinear AF structure described with double propagation vectors $$q_1$$=[1/2, 0, 1/2] and $$q_2$$=[0, 1/2, 1/2]. Interestingly, the NMR reveals that the c component of the Tb moments does not change value between the AF-I and the AF-II phases, even though an a component is newly developed in the AF-II phase.
