In biology, it is expected to understand the mechanism of herd development by analyzing crowd behavior. Currently, medaka (Oryzias latipes) is often used when conducting such research because of its ease of breeding and experimentation. However, when conducting such studies, it is very difficult to manually obtain herd data. In this article, in order to analyze the behavior of medaka, we will introduce a method to automatically extract the swimming trajectory of medaka from time-series images and acquire the data necessary for behavior analysis. In particular, the improvement of extraction accuracy is achieved by processing the overlap state and adjoin state of medaka in the image.

Based on Japanese governmental policy and general scheme, research and development of geological disposal technology for TRU waste has been proceeding to improve reliability of the safety assessment of the co-locational disposal of TRU waste and of HLW, to expand the basement of generic safety assessment, and to develop the alternative technology to cope with the broad geologic environment of Japan. Japan Atomic Energy Agency is dealing with the assignments in the governmental generic scheme. We report here the progress of the studies at the end of H19 (2007) fiscal year, which are (1) treatment and packaging of TRU waste including applicability of calcination for unpacking and sorting of wastes, characterization and inspection methodology of TRU waste, (2) mechanical assessment for the near-field structure including model development and preparation, introduction of hostrock creep model and coupling analysis of deformation of hostrock and engineered barrier. (3) performance assessment of the disposal system including data acquisition and preparation on radionuclides migration, cementitious material alteration, bentonite and hostrock alteration with alkaline solution and nitrate effect, and (4) alternative technology development including decomposition of nitrate.

The performance of net-current free heliotron plasmas has been developed by findings of innovative operational scenarios in conjunction with an upgrade of the heating power and the pumping/fuelling capability in the Large Helical Device (LHD). Consequently, the operational regime has been extended, in particular, with regard to high density, long pulse length and high beta. Diversified studies in LHD have elucidated the advantages of net-current free heliotron plasmas. In particular, an internal diffusion barrier (IDB) by a combination of efficient pumping of the local island divertor function and core fuelling by pellet injection has realized a super dense core as high as 5$$times$$10$$^{20}$$ m$$^{-3}$$, which stimulates an attractive super dense core reactor. Achievements of a volume averaged beta of 4.5% and a discharge duration of 54 min with a total input energy of 1.6 GJ (490 kW on average) are also highlighted. The progress of LHD experiments in these two years is overviewed by highlighting IDB, high-beta and long pulse.

The feedback control of the plasma position and shape based on signals of magnetic probes is performed on JT-60. The fabrication cost of these magnetic probes is very high. Therefore, the cost reduction is required for the use in a next device. On the other hand, the magnetic field measurement in three axial directions with the advanced technology (AT) probes is simultaneously made on LHD of NIFS. The AT-probe has been developed at a low fabrication cost and in compact size and light weight. The possibility of application of the AT-probe in a Tokamak device (JT-60U) has been investigated in collaboration between JAEA and NIFS. We designed and fabricated the casing and interface for the AT-probe, and installed it under the first wall of JT-60U. A comparison of output signals between the installed AT-probe and a existing magnetic probe was made. Tests have been carried out to evaluate the vibration resistance and the radioactive resistance through about two thousand shots with high performance plasmas including one hundred disruption shots in JT-60U. As a result, the AT-probe has a good performance and an enough usable prospect in environment of the Tokamak device.

Recent progress in magnetic measurement

Sakakibara, Satoru*; Kurihara, Kenichi

Purazuma, Kaku Yugo Gakkai-Shi, 80(5), p.364 - 371, 2004/05

This article presents recent progress in magnetic measurements at magnetic confinement systems. The drift-problem of the integrator used in magnetic measurements is one of the major problems for plasma control and estimation of equilibrium parameters in long-pulse operation. In addition, the durability of the sensors such as a magnetic probe, a flux loop, etc., under fusion neutron irradiation environments is also important. The present status of the developments of a long-pulse integrator and a magnetic sensor are reported.

Large-scaled thermohydraulic tests are planned for some new key technologies in the heat transport systems of demonstration fast reactors, in which the reactor vessel, the primary system, the secondary system, water-steam system, and the decay heat removal systems are modeled. Thermohydraulic issues and structural integrity issues were discussed for the top entry piping systems with satellite pools of the intermediate heat exchangers and the pumps, the natural circulation decay heat removal using direct heat exchangers in a reactor hot pool, the reactor vessel wall cooling system, and the new type of steam generators in the demonstration reactor. Concepts of the experimental model for the reactor vessel and the primary system were created and compared with each other for the sodium test facility which enables to answer the thermohydraulic and structural integrity issues. Following items were considered in the creation and in the selection of the models; (1)solution of the issues for Demonstration First Reactor on total system characteristics, the reactor vessel wall cooling system, the decay heat removal system, and the steam generator, (2)balance between the thermohydraulic issues and the structural integrity issues, (3)simulations of compound phenomena and interactions between the components and the heat transport systems. Total system of test facility was specified based on the selected test model.
