We have been conducting dose assessments for Japanese macaques captured in Fukushima to reveal radiobiological effects on the low-dose expose animals. To accurately determine the external exposure dose, it is desirable to examine the analysis of the CO$$_{2}^{-}$$ radical intensity. We examined ESR spectra of teeth of 10 macaques captured in Fukushima by two spectrum-decomposition algorithms.

Electron spin resonance (ESR) dosimetry is one of the most powerful tools for radiation dose reconstruction. The detection limit of this technique using human teeth is reported to be 56 mGy or 67 mGy; however, the absorbed dose of Fukushima residents after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) accident was estimated to be lower than this detection limit. Our aim is to assess the absorbed radiation dose of children in Fukushima Prefecture after the accident; therefore, it is important to estimate the detection limit for their teeth. The detection limit for enamel of deciduous teeth of Japanese children separated by the mechanical method is estimated to be 115.0 mGy. The density separation method can effectively separate enamel from third molars of Japanese people. As we have collected thousands of teeth from children in Fukushima, the present technique may be useful to examine their external absorbed dose after the FNPP accident.

Rapid analysis of $$^{90}$$Sr in bone and tooth samples of cattle were achieved by an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) coupled with mass shift and solid phase extraction techniques. Limit of detection (LOD) in the ICP-MS measurement of 0.1 g samples was lower than that of the radioactivity measurement. Analytical time of the ICP-MS method was reduced from 20 days to 11 hours, compared with the radiometric method. Therefore, the ICP-MS method can be rapid and useful procedure of $$^{90}$$Sr in small bone and tooth samples derived from terrestrial animals.

Systems for "protein transduction", the intracellular delivery of functional proteins, are needed to address the deliverability challenges of protein therapy, but protein transfer in vivo remains difficult. In this study, we have developed a magnetically induced in vivo protein transfection system using a magnetic nanogel chaperone (MC) composed of iron oxide nanoparticles and polysaccharide nanogels. Experiments using an oral cancer model have shown that this MC system is useful for cancer treatment.

The relationship between the CO$$_{2}$$ radical intensity and the absorbed dose (dose response curve) of tooth enamel of Japanese macaque was observed by electron spin resonance and the detection limit of our system was estimated to be 33.5 mGy, which is comparable to the detection limit for human molar teeth. Using the dose response curve, external exposure dose for seven wild Japanese macaques captured in Fukushima prefecture were examined. The results suggest that the external exposure dose for the wild Japanese macaques were ranged between 45 mGy to 300 mGy.

FMF at Oarai Research and Development Center (JNC-2 site) conducts post irradiation examinations (PIE) of fuel assemblies irradiated in Joyo. After the PIEs, the tested material is shipped back to a Joyo spent fuel pond. For the IAEA to apply the integrated safeguards approach (ISA) to the FMF, a new verification system on material transfer between Joyo and the FMF has been established. Gross defect verification of the nuclear material contained in the cask is performed at the time of short notice random interim inspections (RIIs) by measuring the surface neutron dose rate of the cask, filled with water to reduce radiation. As the result of performing a series of preliminary tests, this system could be used for the verification purpose under the ISA. It is clear that application of the system under the ISA provides the transparency of the material shipping and receiving process would be improved.

One of the main goals of the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) Project is to establish appropriate methodologies for reliably investigating and assessing the deep subsurface. This report documents the results of geological modeling of Step1 and Step2 using the iterative investigation approach at the site-scale (several 100m to several km in area). For the Step1 model, existing information (e.g. literature), and results from geological mapping and reflection seismic survey were used. For the Step2 model, additional information obtained from the geological investigation using existing borehole and the shallow borehole investigation were incorporated. As a result of this study, geological elements that should be represented in the model were defined, and several major faults with trends of NNW, EW and NE trend were identified (or inferred) in the vicinity of the MIU-site.

Study on Short-length Lineaments in the Tono Area

In this case study at the Tono Area, detailed lineament interpretation has been carried out with aerial photographs on a scale of 1:10,000, covering the RHS area, and the minimum traceable length and the spatial accuracy of mapped lineaments have been assessed by different methods. In addition, the correlation between the small lineaments and the actual geological structures identified in the previous field investigations has been discussed.The lineaments with length ranging from 300-400 to 1,000m can be accurately mapped on an 1:10,000 scale image and, here, the accuracy of their location is estimated to be about 20-60m. There appears to be a good correlation between such small lineaments and the faults/fractures. Since the frequency distributions of lineaments and fractures show similar fractal geometry, the fracture frequency can be estimated by the lineament data.

Three different stratigraphic division and nomenclature have been used for the Mizunami Group. Accordingly, stratigraphy of the Mizunami Group and the controversial points of stratigraphic division are briefly described. Stratigraphy used by JNC is correlated to the generally used one. Finally, stratigraphic division and nomenclature which should be used in future, is proposed.

Tono Geoscience Center, Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute has been conducting a wide range of geoscientific research in order to build firm scientific and technological basis for the research and development of geological disposal. One of the ongoing geoscientific research programme is a Regional Hydrogeological Study (RHS) project in the Tono region, central Japan. The main goal of the RHS project is to develop and demonstrate the surface-based investigation methodologies to characterize geological environments on regional scale in Japan. The RHS project was initiated in 1992. To date, remote sensing, geological mapping, airborne and ground geophysical investigations have been carried out and thirteen deep boreholes have been also drilled and investigations include geophysical logging, hydraulic tests etc. using these boreholes have been done in the study area of the RHS project (c. 100 km$$^{2}$$). Groundwater chemistry and hydraulic head monitoring is under way in these boreholes. Important results that have been obtained from these investigations include various information concerning the heterogeneity of lithological, hydrogeological and geochemical parameters, and evolution of the groundwater geochemistry. During fiscal year 2002, as the research for regional scale, groundwater simulation was carried out, and the domain setting method of modeling in regional scale was shown and the domain of local scale in the RHS project area was determined. The setting method of modeling/simulation of the local scale domain and its boundary condition were shown. Lineament investigation and reflection seismic survey were carried out in the local scale domain. VSP survey and some investigations concerning groundwater flow and chemistry were conducted in DH-2 borehole. Long-term groundwater monitoring using the existing boreholes was continued. Improvement of the instruments of hydraulic test and groundwater sampling was also continued.
