As a general overview of the research and development of a High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) in JAEA, this book describes the achievements by the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) on the designs, key component technologies such as fuel, reactor internals, high temperature components, etc., and operational experience such as rise-to-power tests, high temperature operation at 950$$^{circ}$$C, safety demonstration tests, etc. In addition, based on the knowledge of the HTTR, the development of designs and component technologies such as high performance fuel, helium gas turbine and hydrogen production by IS process for commercial HTGRs are described. These results are very useful for the future development of HTGRs. This book is published as one of a series of technical books on fossil fuel and nuclear energy systems by the Power Energy Systems Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

The impact of Stellar flares on extrasolar planetary systems has been discussed and argued, especially whether there is a potential impact on their life systems. Here, we propose a comprehensive evaluation system for stellar flares, focusing on Stellar Proton Events (SPE) on selected extrasolar planets with hypothetical atmospheres and oceans. This is done by cross-linking KIC flare-observed and flare-estimated stars by their start pots that are directly linked with the Monte Carlo simulation system PHITS through the exoplanetary database system ExoKyoto. The estimated dose at ground level for each planetary surface did not exceed the critical dose for complex animals.

Recent progress in the energy recovery linac project in Japan

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

Saline groundwater contains high concentrations of chloride ions, which possibly elevate the pH of cement pore water by reacting with hydrogarnet and producing Friedel's salt. Calcium aluminate hydrates and portlandite, which can be found in hydrated ordinary Portland cement (OPC), were immersed in a sodium chloride solution, which had concentrations similar to those found in seawater.

High-spin states in $$^{183}$$Os have been studied using the 170Er(18O,5n) reaction at a beam energy of 85 MeV. Nine rotational bands based on 1-, 3-, 5- and 7-quasiparticle excitations have been observed. Nilsson configurations are assigned for the newly observed bands using g-factors deduced from M1/E2 branching ratios within the bands. In addition, two isomers with K=(43/2+) and (43/2-) have been identified. The K=(43/2+) isomer decays directly to the K=9/2+ ground state band with a large difference in the $$K$$ quantum number, $$mitDelta K=$$17. The decay rates are disccused in terms of a tunneling model where high-$$K$$ (isomeric) and low-$$K$$ states interact via fluctuations towards triaxial nuclear shapes.

As part of environmental remediation of Ningyo-toge Uranium Mine, multi-layered capping is constructed to reduce rainwater infiltration at the upstream of the Mill Tailings Pond. Settlement is expected due to consolidation characteristics of mill tailings and clayish sediments which exist below capping. Numerical simulation is carried out to expect the settlement amount during and after the capping construction. Settlement amount has been measured periodically, and the simulation result and measurement data are compared to evaluate the simulation method.

Muon catalyzed fusion ($$mu$$CF) is a cyclic reaction where a negatively charged muon itself acts like a catalyst of nuclear fusion between hydrogen isotopes. In this work, we used PHITS code to simulate the behavior of the low-energy muon in a thin layer of the solid hydrogen.

When muons are injected into a deuterium thin film target, muon molecules are formed. The muons released after intramolecular fusion (recycling muons) are important for the development of slow muon beams. In this study, corresponding to an experiment in which recycling muons are transported using a coaxial transport tube, the energy distribution of scattered muons, muons after deceleration, and background radiation due to bremsstrahlung by decay electrons and neutrons are analyzed by numerical simulations.

Formation behavior of Cr-rich phase in Fe-Cr-Al alloys under ion irradiation

In Fe-Cr-Al alloys, which are being developed as accident-resistant fuel cladding for light water reactors, it is a challenge to accurately predict the precipitation behavior of the Cr-rich embrittlement phase ($$alpha^prime$$ phase), which occurs at relatively low temperature irradiations. However, the formation behavior of the $$alpha^prime$$ phase under neutron irradiation is not well understood due to global limitations of irradiation reactors. In this study, the influencing factors (Cr concentration, Al concentration, and damage rate) on $$alpha^prime$$ phase formation were quantitatively evaluated by combining systematic irradiation experiments for 14 types of alloys at three levels of damage rate and multiple regression analysis. The results also contributed to the development of more accurate $$alpha$$/($$alpha$$+$$alpha^prime$$) phase boundary curves based on Cr and Al concentrations, which are important in actual alloy design.

Numerical simulation of energy and angular distributions of scattered muons and bremsstrahlung photons in muon-catalyzed fusion experiment

We are attempting to observe regenerative muons emitted from the surface of a solid hydrogen thin film by muon-catalyzed fusion by irradiating the film with muons that have the same charge as electrons and 207 times the mass of electrons. The main background factors in detecting regenerative muons are scattered muons from the accelerator, which are slowed down to the same level as regenerative muons by the target, and bremsstrahlung generated by the components of the device. The results show that there is little scattering within the solid hydrogen, and that the dominant slowing down process is at the Al foil upstream of the solid hydrogen target. The energy distribution of Bremsstrahlung at the X-ray detection position will be reported.

In Fe-Cr-Al (ODS) alloys being developed as accident tolerant fuel cladding for light water reactors, it is a challenge to understand and predict the precipitation behaviour of the Cr-rich embrittlement phase ($$alpha^{prime}$$ phase), which occurs at relatively low irradiation temperatures, and its effect on mechanical properties. Therefore, in this study, the $$alpha/(alpha+alpha^{prime})$$ phase boundary was rationally defined on the alloy state diagram under varying conditions such as temperature and aging time by combining thermal aging experiments on Fe-Cr-Al alloys with systematically varying Cr and Al compositions and machine learning models. The regression model was applied to the 3DAP database to evaluate the relationship between the estimated increase in Vickers hardness and the hardening mechanism due to the $$alpha^{prime}$$ phase. The results suggest that the hardening due to the $$alpha^{prime}$$ phase can be explained by a particle cutting mechanism.
