It is necessary to develop the fast reactor core materials, which can achieve high-burnup operation improving safety and economical performance. Ferritic steels are expected to be good candidate core materials to achieve this objective because of their excellent void swelling resistance. Therefore, oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) ferritic steel and 11Cr-ferritic/martensitic steel (PNC-FMS) have been respectively developed for cladding and wrapper tube materials in Japan Atomic Energy Agency. In this study, the effects of fast neutron irradiation on mechanical properties and microstructure of 9Cr-and 12Cr-ODS steel claddings for fast reactor were investigated. Specimens were irradiated in the experimental fast reactor Joyo using the CMIR-6 at temperatures between 420 and 835$$^{circ}$$C to fast neutron doses ranging from 16 to 33 dpa. The post-irradiation ring tensile tests were carried out at irradiation temperatures.

In order to resume the System Startup Test (SST) of Monju, replacement fuel have to be loaded in exchange for some of initial fuel now loaded in the core to compensate core reactivity lost by decay of Pu-241 in them. The replacement fuel were being stored either in sodium in an ex-vessel storage tank or in air in a storage rack for about 10 years since their fabrication. The initial fuel were irradiated during the SST which was suspended in the end of 1995 and then stayed being loaded in the sodium-circulated core. As this long-term storage and loading may deteriorate mechanical integrity of the assemblies, a study has been made thoroughly on its thermal-hydraulic, structural and material effects on them that might be caused by irradiation in the core, sodium and mechanical environment. The study has shown that the mechanical integrity of them is well maintained even with this long-term storage and loading.

[$$^{11}$$C]Methionine ([$$^{11}$$C]Met) was supplied through barley roots and the $$^{11}$$C signal was follwoed using a real-time imaging system (PETIS), with subsequent development of autoradiographic images of the whole plant. In all cases, [$$^{11}$$C]Met was first translocated to the discrimination center, and this part was strongly labeled. Met absorbed by roots of the plants was subsequently translocated to other parts of the plant. In Fe-deficient (-Fe) barley plants, a drastic reduction in [$$^{11}$$C]Met translocation from the roots to the shoot was observed, while a greater amount of $$^{11}$$C was found in the leaves of Fe-sufficient or Met-pretreated -Fe plants. Treatment of -Fe plants with amiooxyacetic acid increased the translocation of [$$^{11}$$C]Met to the shoot. The retention of exogenously supplied [$$^{11}$$C]Met in the roots of -Fe barley indicates that the Met is used in the biosynthesis of mugineic acid (MA) in barley roots. This and the absence of Met movement from shoots to the roots suggest that the MA phytosiderophores precursor Met originates in the roots of plants.
