In J-PARC linac, the operation of an rf-driven high-intensity H$$^-$$ ion source was initiated in 2014. For plasma ignition, the 2-MHz rf amplifier outputs the power of several tens kW. However the rf amplifier for the ion source and those for the accelerating cavities have not been synchronized. As a result, the wave hights in the beam waveforms were different in shot by shot. Therefore, we have developed an synchronization system between the rf system for the ion source and those for the cavity systems and succeeded the same wave hights in the waveforms.

As a general overview of the research and development of a High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) in JAEA, this book describes the achievements by the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) on the designs, key component technologies such as fuel, reactor internals, high temperature components, etc., and operational experience such as rise-to-power tests, high temperature operation at 950$$^{circ}$$C, safety demonstration tests, etc. In addition, based on the knowledge of the HTTR, the development of designs and component technologies such as high performance fuel, helium gas turbine and hydrogen production by IS process for commercial HTGRs are described. These results are very useful for the future development of HTGRs. This book is published as one of a series of technical books on fossil fuel and nuclear energy systems by the Power Energy Systems Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Graphite materials are used for the in-core components of High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR). Oxidation damage on the graphite components in air ingress accident is a crucial issue for the safety point of view. SiC coating on graphite surface is a possible technique to enhance oxidation resistance. However, it is important to confirm the integrity of this material against high temperature and neutron irradiation for the application of the in-core components. JAEA and Japanese graphite companies carried out the R&D to develop the oxidation-resistant graphite. JAEA and INP investigated the irradiation effects on the oxidation-resistant graphite by using a framework of ISTC partner project. This paper describes the results of post irradiation experiment about the neutron irradiated SiC-coated oxidation-resistant graphite. A brand of oxidation-resistant graphite shows excellent performance against oxidation test after the irradiation.

To enhance oxidation resistance of graphite material for in-core components of HTGR, JAEA and four Japanese graphite companies; Toyo Tanso, IBIDEN, Tokai Carbon and Nippon Techno-Carbon, are carrying out for development of oxidation-resistant graphite by CVD-SiC coating. This paper describes the outline of neutron irradiation test about the oxidation-resistant graphite by WWR-K reactor of INP, Kazakhstan through an ISTC partner project. Prior to the irradiation test, the oxidation-resistant graphite by CVD-SiC coating of all specimens showed enough oxidation resistance under un-irradiation condition. The neutron irradiation test was already completed and out-of-pile oxidation test will be carried out at the hot-laboratory of WWR-K.

Diffusion behavior of D$$_{2}$$O in Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$ film on Fe formed in an NaOH solution containing oxidants

This research aimed to confirm the formation of Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$ film on Fe immersed in aqueous 45 mass% NaOH solution containing some oxidants at the boiling temperature, to recognize the optimum immersion time for the formation of thick and protective film, and to reveal the absorption behavior of D$$_{2}$$O in the Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$ film at room temperature. The results were obtained as follows. It was confirmed that Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$ film was formed on Fe immersed in the NaOH solution for a time more than 0.6 ks, and the film thickness increased parabolically with an increase in the immersion time. D$$_{2}$$O absorption test was carried out to the films formed in the NaOH solution for immersion times of 1.2 and 3.6 ks. An amount of D$$_{2}$$O absorbed into the film increased with an increase in an absorption time up to 1000 ks, and an absorption time more than 1000 ks made an amount of D$$_{2}$$O constant. The constant amount of D$$_{2}$$O was larger for the film formed on Fe immersed in the NaOH solution for 3.6 ks than that for 1.2 ks. The transient of the amount of D$$_{2}$$O absorbed into the film was analyzed on the basis of Fick's law for diffusion, and diffusion coefficients of D$$_{2}$$O were obtained to be 5.1$$times$$10$$^{-15}$$ cm$$^{2}$$ s$$^{-1}$$ and 9.9$$times$$10$$^{-15}$$ cm$$^{2}$$ s$$^{-1}$$ for the films formed for 1.2 and 3.6 ks, respectively. Therefore it was estimated that the diffusion coefficient of the Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$ film was in the region from 5.1$$times$$10$$^{-15}$$ cm$$^{2}$$ s$$^{-1}$$ to 9.9$$times$$10$$^{-15}$$ cm$$^{2}$$ s$$^{-1}$$.

The demand of HTGR to investigate its introduction scenario and heat balance of HTGR have been researched. First, previous studies of HTGR demand were researched. Next, heat balance of GTHTR300, a commercial scale HTGR design, and its characteristics were researched. By using this information, installation number of HTGR to suit for demand in Japan are evaluated. In addition, heat balance evaluation code was developed in this study.

Confirmation of feasibility of fabrication technology and characterization of high-packing fraction fuel compact for HTGR

Confirmation of feasibility of fabrication technology and characterization of the high-packing fraction fuel compact of High Temperature Gas Reactor (HTGR) fuel were carried out. Fuel compacts were fabricated with CFP packing fraction targeted at 33 percent by the same manufacturing condition of HTTR fuel compact. SiC-defective fraction, compressive strength and internal CFP distribution of the compact, important parameters to guarantee its integrity, were evaluated. The high-packing fuel compacts showed as same level of SiC-defective fraction as that of HTTR first loading fuel, 8$$times$$10$$^{-5}$$, and larger compressive strength than the HTTR fuel criteria, 4,900N. The feasibility of fabrication technology and the performance for the high-packing fraction fuel compact was confirmed.

Experiments using a small-scale apparatus with 30 ml actual high-level liquid waste from the Tokai Reprocessing Plant were carried out to show that the hydrogen concentration in the gas phase reaches a steady-state value of much less than 4% (lower explosive limit) in the absence of sweeping-air. The H$$_{2}$$ concentration reached a steady-state value as was expected and it was compared with a value predicted from an equation with parameters which had been obtained using the simulated solution. Satisfactory agreement showed that the Pd-ion catalytic H$$_{2}$$ consumption reaction previously found in the simulated solution proceeded equally well in the actual solution.

Diffusion behavior of D$$_{2}$$O in the film on Fe oxidized at high temperature in air

Diffusion coefficients of D$$_{2}$$O in the films was determined in order to estimate corrosion rate of carbon steel for the overpack in ground water. Fe plates were heated to form oxide films. The films were characterized with XRD and SEM. After that, the specimen was contacted with D$$_{2}$$O for 5184 ks, followed by subjected to TDS to obtain an amount of D$$_{2}$$O absorbing into the film. As a result, single-layered film of Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$ was formed at 573 and 723 K, and double-layered film of Fe$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ and Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$ was formed at 873 K. It was found that an amount of D$$_{2}$$O in the film correlated linearly with a square root of the absorption period, and that the amount was steady for a long period. From the results and Fick's second law, diffusion coefficients of D$$_{2}$$O was determined as 9.7$$times$$10$$^{-13}$$ cm$$^{2.}$$s$$^{-1}$$ for the Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$ film, and 5.5$$times$$10$$^{-13}$$ cm$$^{2.}$$s$$^{-1}$$ to 2.2$$times$$10$$^{-12}$$ cm$$^{2.}$$s$$^{-1}$$ for Fe$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ film.

Corrosion modeling for carbon steel under oxygen depleted underground environment

In the oxygen depleted underground environment, carbon steel reacts with H$$_{2}$$O, producing H$$_{2}$$ gas and forming corrosion film on the steel surface. Corrosion rate is controlled by diffusion of reaction species through corrosion film. Diffusion constants of some species working in the corrosion process were obtained from literatures. However, no data were found on the diffusion constant of H$$_{2}$$O in iron oxides based on an appropriate assumption. Mass transfer model for the corrosion rate was used to simulate the corrosion rate of carbon steel. Liquid phase diffusion model of Fe$$^{2+}$$ or H$$_{2}$$O through pores in the corrosion film and solid phase diffusion model of H$$_{2}$$O through corrosion film itself were examined by Excel simulation. Change in corrosion current density and corrosion loss with time and pH and temperature dependence of corrosion current density were examined. By comparing the results, it is suggested that the solid phase diffusion of H$$_{2}$$O in the corrosion film controls the corrosion rate of carbon steel in oxygen depleted environment.

JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and performance assessment in preliminary investigation phase. The topics and the conducted research are follows; (1) Study on selection of host rock: in terms of hydraulic properties, items for assessing rock property, and assessment methodology of groundwater travel time has been organized with interaction from site investigation. (2) Study on development of scenario: the existing approach has been embodied, in addition, the phenomenological understanding regarding dissolution of and nuclide release from vitrified waste, corrosion of the overpack, long-term performance of the buffer are summarized. (3) Study on setting nuclide migration parameters: the approach for parameter setting has been improved for sorption and diffusion coefficient of buffer/rock, and applied and tested for parameter setting of key radionuclides. (4) Study on ensuring quality of knowledge: framework for ensuring quality of knowledge has been studied and examined aimed at the likely disposal facility condition.

This report summarizes the progress of research and development on geological disposal during the surface-based investigation phase (2001-2005) in the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory project (HOR), of which aims are to apply the design methods of geological disposal and mass transport analysis to actual geological environments and derive future subjects based on the results. The design methods of geological disposal were reviewed based on the recent knowledge and the advertences were identified. Then the parameters for virtual design of engineered barrier system, backfill deposition hole and tunnel were set up based on actual geological conditions obtained from the surface-based investigations in HOR as an example of actual geological environment. The conceptual structure from site investigation and evaluation to mass transport analysis was represented as a work flow at first. Then following this work flow a series of procedures for mass transport analysis were carried out based on actual geological conditions obtained from the surface-based investigations in HOR to illustrate the functioning of the work flow and the applicability of this methodology. Consequently, knowledge that will help follow-up or future execution and planning activities was obtained.
