Polyrotaxane (PR) possesses a supramolecular structure in which cyclic molecules are threaded into an axial polymer. In this study, the static structure of PR dissolved in a good solvent was investigated using contrast variation small-angle neutron scattering. The conformation of the axial linear polymer and the alignment of cyclic molecules within the axial polymer were evaluated quantitatively with the help of a detailed derivation of scattering theory. The decomposed partial scattering functions of the cyclic molecules and the axial polymer and the cross-correlation between cyclic molecules and an axial polymer strongly supported the idea that the alignment of cyclic molecules threaded on the axial polymer is random. On the basis of experimental observation, the entropic origin of the stiffening of PR due to the array of cyclic molecules is discussed.

The shrinking kinetics of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) gels has been studied for two types of PNIPA gels prepared by (i) copolymerization of constituent monomer and cross-linker and (ii) $$gamma$$-ray irradiation in the PNIPA solutions in order to investigate the role of cross-linking on shrinking kinetics. The shrinking kinetics of the monomer cross-linked gels is quite similar to that of the polymer cross-linked gels. On the other hand, a significant difference was found when the microscopic structure and the dynamics were investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and static/dynamic light scattering (SLS/DLS). The degree of built-in inhomogeneities and dynamic fluctuations were evaluated as a function of the cross-linking degree and the gel preparation temperature by intensity decomposition methods for both types of gels. It is concluded that the monomer cross-linked gels have extra built-in inhomogeneities due to the spatial distribution of crosslinks in addition to the frozen concentration fluctuations inherent in polymer gels.

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA)clay nanocomposite hydrogels (NC gels) possess extraordinary superior mechanical properties. We have investigated the structure of NC gel by means of contrast variation small-angle neutron scattering (CV-SANS) technique. By applying CV-SANS in a sophisticated manner, the partial scattering functions of each component can be decomposed quantitatively. The extracted partial scattering functions of clay, polymer, and the polymer-clay cross-term were analyzed in detail, and the selective interaction between clay and polymer is revealed. On the basis of these structural observations, it is confirmed that the clay nanoparticles serve as 2-dimensional cross-linkers. Furthermore, the detailed structure of uniaxially-stretched NC gel was also studied by applying CV-SANS, and microscopic origin of the deformation mechanism of NC gel was explored.

Instruments in JRR-3 have been continuously upgraded, and produced many interesting results in research fields of materials and life science. JRR-3 has been unfortunately out of service for a long time due to the earthquake occurred on March 11th, 2011. The damage of instruments in the JRR-3 due to the earthquake was not so serious, so fortunately they have already been recovered from the disaster. However, lost alignment in neutron guide tubes estimates about 85% neutron flux of before the disaster even after the realignment. Meanwhile, we have undertaken not only recovery but also improvement, e.g., replacing the cold neutron guides with the supermirror guide tube for increasing their neutron flux. On the other hand, the JRR-3 Users Office was started in Apr., 2010 to provide user supports for 18 instruments owned by JAEA. They have recently worked to improve the user-interface like establishments of the JRR-3 publication database and the new proposal application system, RING. Furthermore, they have dedicated their efforts to internationalization for accepting international users in near future. In this presentation, we will introduce current status of JRR-3 after the earthquake including present user support system as well as some research topics especially in neutron engineering diffraction.
