Times Cited Count:0To investigate the geological evidence of near-surface crustal deformations in a high-strain shear zone that has been geodetically identified but not associated with clear tectonic landforms, a fieldwork was conducted in E-W trending southern Kyushu high-strain shear zone, Japan. According to our study, an investigation based on the slip data from minor faults and the occurrences of fracture zones could help to identify a concealed fault that is small in terms of size to record tectonic landforms but can trigger large earthquakes.

Occurrence of recent activity of faults is often evaluated based on displacements of subsurface sediments covering the faults. However, this evaluation is not applicable for faults that occur where subsurface sediments are not found. In this study, mesoscopic description in a field, microscopic observation using thin sections, chemical composition mapping for polished slabs, X-ray diffraction analysis, particle size distribution analysis, and detailed analysis for quartz fragments (scanning electron microscopy and measurement of electron spin resonance signals) were carried out for clay veins in order to contribute a development of evaluation of fault activity. This Data/Code reports the results of these observation and analyses.

The concept of geological disposal of HLW in Japan is based on a multi-barrier system which combines a stable geological environment with a robust barrier system. Potential geological host formations and their surroundings are chosen, in particular, for their long-term stability, taking into account the fact that Japan is located in a tectonically active zone. This report is a plan of research and development (R&D) on geosphere stability for long-term isolation of HLW in JAEA, in fiscal year 2014. The objectives and contents in fiscal year 2014 are described in detail based on the outline of 5 years plan (fiscal years 2010-2014). In addition, the planned framework is structured into the following categories: (1) Development and systematization of investigation techniques, (2) Development of models for long-term estimation and effective assessment, (3) Development of dating techniques.

Divertor IR Thermography is one of the diagnostics which Japan is in charge of development in ITER project. The conceptual design has been performed so far, and the progress is reported here. By reducing the size of mirrors, and making the optical path a labyrinthine structure, the design of a new optics that fills requirements of both spatial resolution and neutron shielding has been advanced. To achieve the required measurement accuracy, the detected signal and the noises such as bremsstrahlung light, detector noise and thermal noise of optical components were evaluated. Higher photons than the bremsstrahlung light are obtained, excluding the low temperature range. The simulation calculation of reflection from wall was started. Detailed method of data processing of deriving the profiles of surface temperature in the divertor plates from the observed signals and in-situ calibration strategies of the optical system are important issues and will be discussed.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.
