Pressure effect on intersite charge transfer in A-site-ordered double-perovskite-structure oxide

An A-site ordered perovskite-structure oxide, LaCu$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{4}$$O$$_{12}$$, shows unusual intermetallic charge transfer between the A-site Cu and the B-site Fe ions. Like temperature, pressure also induces the intermetallic charge transfer at room temperature and the compound changes from low-pressure LaCu$$^{3+}$$$$_{3}$$Fe$$^{3+}$$$$_{4}$$O$$_{12}$$ to high-pressure LaCu$$^{2+}$$$$_{3}$$Fe$$^{3.75+}$$$$_{4}$$O$$_{12}$$ accompanying with significant volume collapse and as well as unusual softening in bulk modulus. In addition, the material was changed from an antiferromagnetic insulator to a paramagnetic metal transition. Either by physical or chemical (cation substitution) pressure, the charge-transfer transition temperature decreases, and the lower volume phase stabilizes Cu$$^{2+}$$ and Fe$$^{3.75+}$$ at the A and B sites, respectively.

There is an idea of the application of piping expansion joints to main piping systems of Large-scale FBRs as one of the cost reduction measures. The internal pressure buckling test of bellows is one of the important items of the FBR piping expansion joints feasibility study. In PNC the internal pressure buckling test is going on in order to establish the analytical method and rules for the internal pressure buckling of bellows. In this report the buckling test results of the series of the sub-scale bellows (12B, 7$$sim$$30 convolutions) subjected to internal pressure are described, which were obtained during 1986 FY. The followings are the main results. (1)The root bulge occurred in the region between 7 and 10 convolutions and the column squirm occurred in the region between 15 and 30 convolutions. The simple plastic hinge mechanism predicts the critical pressure well in the former region and the simple column squirm analysis in the latter. (2)The initial bending angle of bellows affected the critical pressure badly only in the case of the column squirm. The buckling pressure of bellows must be estimated taking the bending deformation into consideration.

There is an idea of the application of piping expansion joints to main piping systems of Large-scale FBRs as one of the cost reduction measures. The FBR piping expansion joints feasibility study is going in PNC, and the pressure buckling test of bellows is one of the important items of the study. In PNC the internal pressure buckling test is going on with full-scale bellows test specimens (42$$^{B}$$) at oarai Engineering Center, and on the other hand with sub-scale bellows (20$$^{B}$$, 12$$^{B}$$) in other place in order to establish the analytical method and rules for the internal pressure buckling of bellows. In this report the result of the series of the sub-scale bellows internal buckling tests is discribed, which was carried out during 1984FY and 1985FY. The following is the main result. (1)In the relation among the thickness, the number of convolutions and the buckling pressure, the test data characteristic was similar to the estimated limit - EJMA standard for the squirm and the equations by RI Ltd. for the root bulge. This result made it certain that the pressure limit for bellows buckling could be constructed on the basis of existing evaluation methods. (2)Initial bending angle of bellows badly effected on the limit of bellows buckling pressure only in the case of the squirm. The pressure limit for the bellows buckling must be estimated taking the bellows displacements into consideration.
