The role of valence electrons for the muon capture process by molecules is experimentally investigated with the aid of cascade calculations. Low-momentum muons are introduced to gas targets below atmospheric pressure. The initial states of captured muons are determined from the measured muonic X-ray structure of the Lyman and Balmer series. We propose that the lone pair electrons in the carbon atom of CO significantly contribute to the capture of a muon with large angular momenta.

We have developed a new Fermi chopper referred to as Magic chopper to realize the full optimization of the experimental condition for Multi-Ei method in a chopper spectrometer. In this study, the theoretical aspects of MAGIC chopper concept will be initially presented, and the performances of MAGIC chopper will be evaluated by both Monte Carlo simulation and neutron transmission experiment.

We present a two-body calculation method for a rigorous treatment of Coulomb interaction in momentum ($$p$$-)space. The method is based on a modified Coulomb potential which is equivalent to the genuine Coulomb potential in configuration ($$r$$-)space. We also use the two-potential theory with the auxiliary potential. The calculated proton-proton phase shifts are in very good agreement with the experimental data for the states $$0 le ell le 2$$. The phase shifts for the $$3 le ell le 5$$ states are also calculated. Practical applications of our method in a few hadron problems are discussed.

Elemental analysis of bulk materials can be performed by detecting the high-energy X-rays emitted from muonic atoms. Muon irradiation of standard bronze samples was performed to determine the muon capture probabilities for the elemental components from muonic X-ray spectra. Nondestructive elemental analysis of an ancient Chinese coin was also performed.

Estimation of kinetic parameters based on chirping Alfv$'e$n Eigenmodes

Lesur, M.*; Idomura, Yasuhiro; Shinohara, Koji; Garbet, X.*

Proceedings of 23rd IAEA Fusion Energy Conference (FEC 2010) (CD-ROM), 8 Pages, 2011/03

Alfv$'e$n Eigenmodes (AEs) with frequency sweeping (chirping AEs) are analyzed based on the so-called Berk-Breizman (BB) model. Kinetic parameter regimes with chirping nonlinear solutions are delimited, and a new quasi-periodic chirping regime is found, where the quasi-period of chirping events depends on the linear growth rate. Fundamental kinetic parameters such as the linear drive and the external damping rate are estimated by fitting nonlinear chirping characteristics between the experiment and the BB model. This approach is applied to Toroidicity-induced AEs on JT-60U, which suggests the existence of modes far from marginal stability. Two collision models are considered, and it is shown that dynamical friction and velocity-space diffusion are essential to reproduce nonlinear features observed in experiments. The results are validated by recovering measured growth and decay of perturbation amplitude, and by estimating collision frequencies from experimental equilibrium data.

New determination method for iodine-129 in the environmental samples by using MIP-MS

Proceedings of the International Workshop on Distribution and Speciation of Radionuclides in the Environment, p.354 - 357, 2000/00

Iodine-129 is an important radionuclide for environmental assessment, because it has a long half-life. A new analytical technique with Microwave Induced Plasma Mass Spectrometry (MIP-MS) was applied to the determination of iodine-129 ($$^{129}$$I) in the environmental samples. Environmental samples contain a large amount of matrices elements. Therefore, the interference elements were eliminated by ashing at 1000$$^{circ}$$C, and iodine was trapped by activated charcoal and finally extracted by tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH). I-129 in the soil sample was also analyzed by conventional method [neutron activation analysis (NAA)] and MIP-MS method. The analytical data by MIP-MS and NAA methods showed excellent agreement.
