Fission-fragment mass distributions were measured for $$^{237-240}$$U, $$^{239-242}$$Np and $$^{241-244}$$Pu populated in the excitation-energy range from 10 to 60 MeV by multi-nucleon transfer channels in the reaction $$^{18}$$O + $$^{238}$$U at the JAEA tandem facility. Among them, the data for $$^{240}$$U and $$^{240,241,242}$$Np were observed for the first time. It was found that the mass distributions for all the studied nuclides maintain a double-humped shape up to the highest measured energy in contrast to expectations of predominantly symmetric fission due to the washing out of nuclear shell effects. From a comparison with the dynamical calculation based on the fluctuation-dissipation model, this behavior of the mass distributions was unambiguously attributed to the effect of multi-chance fission.

The Japanese government has a plan to remove the melted reactor fuel for the full deconstruction of Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plants, which have been seriously damaged in the Great East Japan Earthquake. The removal of the fuel must be carried out without reaching the criticality of the fuel. However, it is quite difficult to detect prompt neutrons accompanied by fission to monitor the increased fission rate due to the background $$gamma$$-rays from the fission products in the fuel. On the other hand, the spontaneous fission of $$^{252}$$Cf shows a high energy $$gamma$$-ray component around $$E_{gamma}$$ = 14 MeV, which is significantly larger than that for the background $$gamma$$-rays from the fission products. We are proposing to develop a system based on the use of the high energy $$gamma$$-rays accompanied by fission. In order to design the system, it is essential to know the spectrum of prompt fission $$gamma$$-rays up to more than 8 MeV for thermal neutron-induced fission of $$^{235}$$U. However, no data are available in the energy range larger than 7 MeV. This prompted us to make a new measurement to extend the known prompt $$gamma$$ ray energy spectrum up to 20 MeV. In this contribution, we will present the results of a test experiment to know the measuring condition such as background $$gamma$$-ray yield and spectrum.

A project of the fission data measurement as well as the measurement of the neutron capture cross sections, using a surrogate method based on multi-nucleon transfer reactions, is running at JAEA. We have constructed appatus consists of a fission setup including four position-sensitive multi-wire proportional counters (MWPCs) to detect fission fragments and a capture setup containing two anti-Compton LaBr$$_{3}$$(Ce) spectrometers to measure the $$gamma$$ rays from the populated compound nuclei. Both setups contain a Si $$Delta$$E-E detector to detect outgoing projectile-like particles by which we can identify the populated compound nuclei. We also placed 33 scintillators around the fission setup to detect fission neutrons in coincidence with the fission fragments. The measurements was carried out at the JAEA-Tokai tandem accelerator facility. In this contribution, we will present our results on neutron-induced fission and neutron capture cross sections by using the surrogate method.
