Electronic stopping power dependence of ion-track size in UO$$_{2}$$ irradiated with heavy ions in the energy range of $$sim$$1MeV/u

Ishikawa, Norito; Sonoda, Takeshi*; Sawabe, Takashi*; Sugai, Hiroyuki*; Sataka, Masao*

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research B, 314, p.180 - 184, 2013/11

 Times Cited Count:20 Percentile:82.62(Instruments & Instrumentation)

In order to investigate electronic stopping power dependence of ion-track size in UO$$_{2}$$, ion-tracks in UO$$_{2}$$ irradiated with various ions with the specific energy in the order of 1 MeV/u have been observed by a transmission electron microscope. The ion-tracksize shows monotonic increase as a function of the electronic stopping power. Theion-track size obtained for UO$$_{2}$$ is smaller than that obtained for CeO$$_{2}$$, although these two compounds have same crystallographic structure and similar thermal properties. The ion-track sizes for irradiations with ions having relatively low energy of about1 MeV/u are smaller than those expected from the thermal spike models based on melting temperature criterion. The possible interpretations for the unusually smallion-tracks observed for UO$$_{2}$$ are discussed.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency conducted a project "Isotopic Composition measurement of Fission Products in Spent Fuel from FY2008 to FY2011" by the entrustment of Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization. In that project, we measured the isotopic composition of neodymium isotopes which are important to evaluate the burnup value of spent nuclear fuel by using two different methods and obtained different results. So that we carried out the follow-up measurement in order to investigate the reason of the difference between two neodymium measurements. It was found that we needed correction to the measurement results of neodymium for two samples and a part of other fission products for all samples in total five samples. This report summarizes the all works carried out in this follow-up measurement and obtained results.

In order to characterize the radiation damage due to ion-track formation in UO$$_{2}$$, polycrystalline samples have been irradiated with 210-MeV Xe ions, and measured with XRD (X-ray diffraction) technique using Cu X-ray. We have also tried EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) measurement using X-ray near U L$$_{3}$$-edge. The results show that XRD technique detects damage at relatively low fluence of 10$$^{16}$$ ions/m$$^{2}$$ and higher, while the irradiation-induced change of EXAFS spectra is not observed even at highest fluence of 10$$^{19}$$ ions/m$$^{2}$$. The damage detection may be critically influenced by the depth profile of X-ray penetration.

The general purpose Monte Carlo electron-$$gamma$$ shower computer code (EGS5) was used to obtain the U, Np, and Pu X-ray response from the hybrid K-edge/XRF densitometry (HKED). In the present simulation, we adopt a monochromatic, linearly polarized photon beam generated by inverse Compton scattering of laser light with high energy electrons from an energy recovery linac. The simulation has been carried out under various conditions of the U, Np, and Pu concentrations to investigate the effect to counting rates as well as counting precision. The results of the simulation show that the assessment time for low concentration Pu input solutions can be reduced by the improvement of signal-to-background ratios. The Np concentration can also be determined with a counting precision of approximately 1% in standard deviation during the 1 hour measurement for a 3N HNO$$_3$$ sample solution including U (100 g/L), Np (0.1 g/L), and Pu (20 or 100 g/L).

Criticality experiments using uranyl nitrate solution fuel are being conducted at STACY (the Static Experiment Critical Facility) and TRACY (the Transient Experiment Critical Facility) in NUCEF (the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Safety Engineering Research Facility). Chemical analyses of the solution have been carried out to take necessary data for criticality experiments, for treatment and control of the fuel, and for safeguards purpose at the analytical laboratory placed in NUCEF. About 300 samples are analyzed annually that provide various kinds of data, such as uranium concentration, isolation acid concentration, uranium isotopic composition, concentration of fission product (FP) nuclides, tri-butyl phosphoric acid (TBP) concentration, impurities in the solution fuel and so on. This report summarizes the analytical methods and quality management of the analysis for uranyl nitrate solution relating to the criticality experiments.
