Electronic stopping power dependence of ion-track size in UO$$_{2}$$ irradiated with heavy ions in the energy range of $$sim$$1MeV/u

In order to investigate electronic stopping power dependence of ion-track size in UO$$_{2}$$, ion-tracks in UO$$_{2}$$ irradiated with various ions with the specific energy in the order of 1 MeV/u have been observed by a transmission electron microscope. The ion-tracksize shows monotonic increase as a function of the electronic stopping power. Theion-track size obtained for UO$$_{2}$$ is smaller than that obtained for CeO$$_{2}$$, although these two compounds have same crystallographic structure and similar thermal properties. The ion-track sizes for irradiations with ions having relatively low energy of about1 MeV/u are smaller than those expected from the thermal spike models based on melting temperature criterion. The possible interpretations for the unusually smallion-tracks observed for UO$$_{2}$$ are discussed.

X-ray study of radiation damage in UO$$_{2}$$ irradiated with high-energy heavy ions

In order to characterize the radiation damage due to ion-track formation in UO$$_{2}$$, polycrystalline samples have been irradiated with 210-MeV Xe ions, and measured with XRD (X-ray diffraction) technique using Cu X-ray. We have also tried EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) measurement using X-ray near U L$$_{3}$$-edge. The results show that XRD technique detects damage at relatively low fluence of 10$$^{16}$$ ions/m$$^{2}$$ and higher, while the irradiation-induced change of EXAFS spectra is not observed even at highest fluence of 10$$^{19}$$ ions/m$$^{2}$$. The damage detection may be critically influenced by the depth profile of X-ray penetration.

To study the effects of swift heavy ion irradiation on cerium dioxide (CeO$$_{2}$$), CeO$$_{2}$$ sintered pellets were irradiated with 200 MeV Xe ions at room temperature. For irradiated and unirradiated samples, the spectra of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were measured. XPS spectra for the irradiated samples show that the valence state of Ce atoms partly changes from +4 to +3. The amount of Ce$$^{3+}$$ state was quantitatively obtained as a function of ion-fluence. The relative amount of oxygen atom displacements, which are accompanied by the decrease in Ce valence state, is 3-5%. This value is too large to be explained in terms of elastic interactions between CeO$$_{2}$$ and 200 MeV ions. The experimental result suggests the contribution of 200 MeV Xe induced electronic excitation to the displacements of oxygen atoms.

High-energy particle irradiation effects of CeO$$_{2}$$ is investigated using electron microscopy. It is found that ion track is formed only when the electronic energy transfer exceeds 16 keV/nm.

Analysis of the uranyl nitrate solution fuel is carried out at the analytical laboratory of NUCEF (Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Research Facility), which provides essential data for operation of STACY (Static Experiment Critical Facility), TRACY (Transient Experiment Critical Facility) and the fuel treatment system. Analyzed in FY 2006 were uranyl nitrate solution fuel samples taken before and after experiments of STACY and TRACY, samples for the preparation of uranyl nitrate solution fuel, and samples for nuclear material accountancy purpose. The total number of the samples analyzed in FY 2006 was 254. This report summarizes work related to the analysis and management of the analytical laboratory in the FY 2006.

CeO$$_{2}$$ thin films were irradiated with 200 MeV Xe ions. Effects of the irradiation were studied by using Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) measurement at SPring-8 synchrotron radiation facility. EXAFS spectra for the irradiated thin films near the Ce K-edge show that the coordination number for oxygen atoms around Ce atom decreases and that the Ce-O Debye-Waller factor increases by the irradiation. The atomic distance between oxygen atom and Ce atom does not vary within the accuracy of EXAFS measurement. The effect of high density electronic excitation on the structure of CeO$$_{2}$$ is discussed.

The New Crossover Project (NXO) is studying effect of fission irradiation on fuel material that research activity is crossing over universities, national and private laboratories. Simulation studies are being performed to find principal and triggering processes of the rim-structure formation in high burnup LWR fuel pellet, using accelerator irradiation and computational calculations. Accelerator irradiation, high energy electron irradiation, fission energy particle beam and ion implantation (ragegas atoms) and combined overlapping irradiations are being performed. For the target of irradiation, CeO$$_{2}$$ isused as simulation of nuclear fuel. The initial results were such as planar structure made by Oxygen defects created by high energy electrons, and surface modification similar to grain-sub-division created by high fluence high energy particle irradiations.

Criticality experiments using uranyl nitrate solution fuel are being conducted at STACY (the Static Experiment Critical Facility) and TRACY (the Transient Experiment Critical Facility) in NUCEF (the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Safety Engineering Research Facility). Chemical analyses of the solution have been carried out to take necessary data for criticality experiments, for treatment and control of the fuel, and for safeguards purpose at the analytical laboratory placed in NUCEF. About 300 samples are analyzed annually that provide various kinds of data, such as uranium concentration, isolation acid concentration, uranium isotopic composition, concentration of fission product (FP) nuclides, tri-butyl phosphoric acid (TBP) concentration, impurities in the solution fuel and so on. This report summarizes the analytical methods and quality management of the analysis for uranyl nitrate solution relating to the criticality experiments.

Analytical results of uranyl nitrate solution are essential data for the operation of the Static Experiment Critical Facility (STACY), the Transient Experiment Critical Facility (TRACY) and the fuel treatment system in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Safety Engineering Research Facility (NUCEF). Analytical works were carried out for the determination of fuel characteristics before and after criticality experiments, fuel preparation and nuclear material accountancy in FY. 2001. Moreover,as to preparation of critical experiments at STACY, plutonium preliminary tests were carried out to confirm the treatment condition (characteristics of the dissolution of the mixed oxide (MOX) powder and the extraction & separation for uranium / plutonium) of plutonium nitrate solution. Analytical works were carried out on the preliminary tests. A total number of analytical samples in FY. 2001 were 322 samples.This report summarizes the data on analytical works in FY.2001.

In accordance with handling and dissolution of mixed oxide(MOX) powder in the fuel treatment system of NUCEF ,the preliminary tests for dissolution of the MOX powder in nitric acid solution have started since the end of 2000 ,after the MOX powder transfer to the NUCEF. The analytical works were carried out for the preliminary tests. A total number of analytical samples in FY. 2000 were 483 samples . This report summarizes the data on analytical works in FY.2000.
