The nuclear half-life of $$^{235m}$$U has been reported to vary depending on the chemical environment. In this study, both the half-life and the internal-conversion (IC) electron energy spectrum were measured for $$^{235m}$$U with identical chemical environments for the first time. $$^{235m}$$U oxide and fluoride samples were subjected to these measurements, and clear differences in the half-life and the energy spectrum between these samples were observed. The peaks in the energy spectra were identified with the relativistic density functional theory calculation, and the molecular orbital states of the $$^{235m}$$U oxide and fluoride estimated from the energy spectra and the calculation qualitatively explained the difference in the half-lives between the samples.

The magnetic hyperfine field and electric field gradient at the$$^{111}$$Cd($$leftarrow$$ $$^{rm 111m}$$Cd) and $$^{rm 111}$$Cd($$leftarrow$$$$^{rm 111}$$In) probe nuclei introduced in a perovskite manganese oxide $${rm La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}}$$ ($$T_C$$ $$sim$$ 250 K) were measured for the study of the local magnetism and structure by means of time-differential perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy. In the ferromagnetic phase at 77 K, a very slight supertransferred magnetic hyperfine field (SMHF) ($$<$$ 0.014 T) combined with a well-defined electric field gradient was observed at the nonmagnetic $$^{111}$$Cd nucleus on the La/Ca A site. This observation suggests that the large magnetic hyperfine field ($$B_{hf}$$ = 6.9 T) measured, in our previous work, at the $$^{140}$$Ce probe nucleus on the A site originates from the contribution of a 4$$f$$ spin oriented by the SMHF from adjacent Mn ions.

A detection system for synchrotron-radiation (SR)-based M$"o$ssbauer spectroscopy was developed to enhance the nuclear resonant scattering counting rate and thus increase the available nuclides. In the system, a windowless avalanche photodiode (APD) detector was combined with a vacuum cryostat to detect the internal conversion (IC) electrons and fluorescent X-rays accompanied by nuclear de-excitation. As a feasibility study, the SR-based M$"o$ssbauer spectrum using the 76.5 keV level of $$^{174}$$Yb was observed without $$^{174}$$Yb enrichment of the samples. The counting rate was five times higher than that of our previous system, and the spectrum was obtained within 10 h. This result shows that nuclear resonance events can be more efficiently detected by counting IC electrons for nuclides with high IC coefficients. Furthermore, the windowless detection system enables us to place the sample closer to the APD elements and is advantageous for nuclear resonant inelastic scattering measurements. Therefore, this detection system can not only increase the number of nuclides accessible in SR-based M$"o$ssbauer spectroscopy but also allows the nuclear resonant inelastic scattering measurements of small single crystals or enzymes with dilute probe nuclides that are difficult to measure with the previous detection system.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has the responsibility for procurement of all of the ITER central solenoid (CS) conductor lengths. The CS conductor is composed of 576 Nb$$_{3}$$ Sn superconducting strands and 288 Cu strands assembled together into a multistage cable and protected by a circle-in-square sheath tube (jacket) with the outer dimension of 49 mm. In preparation for CS conductor production, the following R&D activities have been performed; (1) Mechanical tests at 4 K have been performed for jacket candidate materials such as 316LN and JK2LB, (2) Welding test for filler selection, (3) Measurement of coefficient of sliding friction using a 100-m long dummy cable, (4) Deformation characteristics of the conductor cross section after compaction and spooling. As a result of these R&D, the CS conductor jacket manufacturing technologies have been confirmed to start the procurement of the CS conductor.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has the responsibility to procure 25% of the ITER Toroidal Field coil conductors as the Japanese Domestic Agency (JADA) in the ITER project. The TF conductor is a circular shaped, cable-in-conduit conductor, composed of a cable and a stainless steel conduit (jacket). The outer diameter and maximum length of the TF conductor are 43.7 mm and 760 m, respectively. JAEA has constructed newly conductor manufacturing facility. Prior to starting conductor, JAEA manufactured a 760-m long Cu dummy conductor as process qualification of dummy cable, the jacket sections and fabrication procedures, such as welding, cable insertion, compaction and spooling. Following qualification of all manufacturing processes, JAEA has started to fabricate superconducting conductors for the TF coils.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency has a responsibility for procurement of the ITER toroidal field coil conductors as Japanese Domestic Agency (JADA) of the ITER project. The TF conductor is a circular shaped cable-in-conduit conductor, which is composed of cable and stainless steel conduit (jacket). The outer diameter and wall thickness of jacket are 43.7mm and 2mm, respectively. The cable consists of 900 Nb$$_{3}$$Sn superconducting strands and 522 Cu strands. The length of TF conductor is 780m in maximum. Preparation of conductor fabrication was completed in December 2009. And then, to demonstrate a conductor manufacturing procedure, JADA fabricated 780m-long Cu dummy conductor as a process qualification. Finally, the 780m-long Cu dummy conductor has been successfully completed, ahead of other domestic agencies that are in charge of TF conductor procurement. Since all of manufacturing processes have been qualified, JADA started to fabricate superconducting conductors for TF coils.

Europium-hydride EuH$$_{x}$$ exposed to high-pressure H$$_{2}$$ conditions has been found to exhibit structural and valence changes, $$Pnma$$ ($$x$$=2, divalent) $$rightarrow$$ $$P$$63/$$mmc$$ ($$x$$=2, 7.2-8.7 GPa) $$rightarrow$$ $$I$$4/$$m$$ ($$x$$$$>$$2, 8.7-9.7 GPa) $$rightarrow$$ $$I$$4/$$mmm$$ ($$x$$$$>$$2, 9.7 GPa-, trivalent). Having trivalent character and distorted cubic fcc structure, the $$I$$4/$$mmm$$ structure is the $$beta$$-phase which has been commonly observed for other rare-earth metal hydrides. Our study clearly demonstrates that EuH$$_{x}$$ is no longer an "irregular" member of the rare earth metal hydrides.

We have developed a new method that yields M$"o$ssbauer absorption spectra using synchrotron radiation (SR); this method is applicable for almost all M$"o$ssbauer nuclides including those that cannot be measured by previous methods using radioisotope (RI) sources. The M$"o$ssbauer spectrum of the 68.752 keV excited state of $$^{73}$$Ge, which cannot be measured using a RI source, was measured using SR. Our results show that this method can be used to perform advanced M$"o$ssbauer spectroscopy measurements owing to the excellent features of SR.

Anion-exchange chromatography of element 105, dubnium (Db), produced in the $$^{248}$$Cm($$^{19}$$F, 5n)$$^{262}$$Db reaction is investigated together with the homologues Nb and Ta, and the pseudo-homologue Pa in 13.9 M hydrofluoric acid (HF) solution. The distribution coefficient (K$$_{d}$$) of Db on an anion-exchange resin is successfully determined by running cycles of the 1702 chromatographic column separations. The result clearly indicates that the adsorption of Db on the resin is significantly different from that of the homologues and that the adsorption of anionic fluoro complexes of these elements decreases in the sequence of Ta $$approx$$ Nb $$>$$ Db $$geq$$ Pa.

A synchrotron-radiation-based neV-resolution spectrometer has been developed using single-line pure nuclear Bragg reflection. The developed optical system consists of two components: a $$^{57}$$FeBO$$_{3}$$ single crystal near the N$'e$el temperature for producing $$^{57}$$Fe M$"o$ssbauer radiation from synchrotron radiation, and a single-line M$"o$ssbauer absorber ($$^{57}$$Fe-enriched stainless steel foil) for analyzing the energy distribution. As a feasibility study, we have performed the measurement of the M$"o$ssbauer radiation diffracted by a Si crystal under ultrasound vibration with the optical system and have successfully observed the neV-range energy modulation due to the ultrasound vibration.
