Status quo of the injector for the IFMIF/EVEDA prototype accelerator

The prototype accelerator is being developed as an engineering validation for the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) equipped with an accelerator-driven-type neutron source for developing fusion reactor materials. This prototype accelerator is a deuteron linear accelerator consisting of an injector, an RFQ, a superconducting linac and their auxiliaries. It aims to produce a CW D$$^+$$ beam with the energy and current of 9 MeV/125 mA. The injector test was completed at CEA/Saclay in 2012 for producing a CW H$$^+$$ beam and a CW D$$^+$$ beam with the energy and current of 100 keV/140 mA. After the beam test at CEA/Saclay, the injector was transported to the International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) located in Rokkasho, Aomori, Japan. In the end of 2013, installation of the injector was started at IFERC for the injector beam test beginning from summer 2014 in order to obtain better beam qualities to be satisfied with the injection and acceleration of the following accelerators. In this paper, some results of the injector beam test performed at CEA/Saclay and the status quo of the installation of the injector at IFERC are presented.

Cabling technology of Nb$$_3$$Sn conductor for ITER central solenoid

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is procuring all amounts of Nb$$_3$$Sn conductors for Central Solenoid (CS) in the ITER project. Before start of mass-productions, the conductor should be tested to confirm superconducting performance in the SULTAN facility, Switzerland. The original design of cabling twist pitches is 45-85-145-250-450 mm, called normal twist pitch (NTP). The test results of the conductors with NTP was that current shearing temperature (Tcs) is decreasing due to electro-magnetic (EM) load cycles. On the other hand, the results of the conductors with short twist pitches (STP) of 25-45-80-150-450 mm show that the Tcs is stabilized during EM load cyclic tests. Because the conductors with STP have smaller void fraction, higher compaction ratio during cabling is required and possibility of damage on strands increases. The technology for the cables with STP was developed in Japanese cabling suppliers. The several key technologies will be described in this paper.

An development of accelerator-based neutron irradiation facility is planning to develop materials for a demonstration fusion reactor. To obtain a 14 MeV neutron energy using the neutron-generating D-Li stripping reaction, an injection into liquid lithium flow by a 40 MeV deuteron beam is employed in IFMIF design concept. In the acceleration of deuteron beam, the activation due to the beam loss is critical issue. The activation analyses for the air in an accelerator vault are carried out by PHITS code and DCHAIN code using the experimental data for deuteron induced thick target neutron yield at 5 MeV and 9 MeV for source term.

We have successfully manufactured all superconducting cables for CS and EF coils of JT-60SA. The low temperature performance of superconducting wires satisfied the specifications under sufficiently low deviations and high production yields. Ni-plated strands of EF cables having the larger sliding friction between strands than that of Cr-plated strands of CS cable caused difficulties on the cabling without any defects. Consequently, the newly developed cabling techniques with the original inspection apparatus significantly enhanced the manufacturability and were effective for guarantee of the quality.

Neutron radiography is one of useful tools to visualize water behavior in fuel cells under operation. In order to observe the detailed information about the water distribution in MEA and GDL in fuel cells, a high spatial resolution and high sensitivity neutron imaging system are required. We developed an imaging system using the neutron color imaging intensifier and continuously observed water distribution in operating a fuel cell. By using the system, a small type fuel cell under operation was continuously observed at the TNRF in every 20 sec. In the results, the water area was appeared from GDL and MEA, and expanded to the channel of the cathode side. On the other hand, voltage was gradually reduced with the operation time, and steeply dropped. It is considered that voltage drop was caused by blockage of gas flow due to the piling up water in the channel of the cathode side.

The Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute submitted "Second Progress Report on Research and Development for the Geological Disposal of HLW in Japan" to the Japanese government. This report contains investigations of the corrosion life time of the overpack on the basis of experimental data and past research, assuming the ranging geological environment of Japan. However some subjects, such as the behavior of the overpack under high pH conditions and the behavior of the engineering barrier with change of near-field environmental condition with time for promoting reliability have still been left. To take into account these conditions, expert committee composed of metal corrosion science experts were established in the Nuclear Safety Research Association and past research outcomes and the theory of safety assessment were investigated from the view points of long term stability and corrosion resistance of engineering barrier.

Latest status on development of long-term fusion nuclear technologies at JAERI is overviewed. A tritium processing system for the ITER and DEMO reactors was designed and basic technologies for each component of this system was demonstrated successfully by an operation of the integrated system for one month. An ultra-violet laser with a wave length of 193 nm was found quite effective for removing tritium from in-vessel components of D-T fusion reactors. Blanket technologies have been developed for the Test Blanket Module of the ITER and for advanced blankets for DEMO reactors. This blanket is composed of Li$$_{2}$$TiO$$_{3}$$ breeder pebbles and neutron multiplier Be pebbles, contained in a box structures made of a reduced activation ferritic steel F82H. Mechanical properties of F82H under neutron irradiation up to 50 dpa were obtained in a temperature range from 200 to 500$$^{circ}$$C. Design of the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) has been developed so as to obtain engineering data for candidate materials for DEMO reactors, under neutron irradiation up to 100-200 dpa.

Polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFC) are expected as one of the clean energy sources in next generation. The water management is one of important subjects for enhance of stability and durability of the PEFC. Neutron radiography is one of useful tools to visualize water behavior in operating fuel cells. In order to observe the detailed information about the water distribution in fuel cells, we developed an imaging system using a neutron color image intensifier which is novel neutron image detector with high spatial resolution and high sensitivity. By using the imaging system, the water distribution in a small sized fuel cell during operation was visualized. In this paper we would report results and discussion about correlation between the water behavior and fuel cell performance.
