In this study, a post-irradiation examination of pure tungsten (W) and tantalum (Ta) specimens irradiated at the Swiss Spallation-Neutron Source is conducted. W is used as a potential candidate for a solid spallation-target material owing to its favorable properties. However, W also suffers from several disadvantages such as poor corrosion resistance to water coolant and irradiation embrittlement. To improve these properties, cladding technologies using Ta for W alloys have been developed. In the present study, we investigated the irradiation effects on two tungsten materials, poly-crystal W (W-Poly) and single-crystal W (W-Sin), along with pure polycrystalline Ta. The tensile-test results revealed that W-Poly exhibited almost no ductility after irradiation of 10.2-35.0 dpa. W-Sin was irradiated up to 10.2 dpa and demonstrated 6% of total elongation (TE). With regard to Ta, TE decreased based on the increase in irradiation, reaching almost zero at doses of more than 10.3 dpa.

Spin-contrast-variation neutron reflectivity obtains multiple reflectivity curves from a single sample and a single beam source. We used the strong point of the technique to reveal that, although methylated-perhydropolysilazane-derived silica layer has a higher porosity near the interface with acrylic urethane resin, the resin did not permeate the pore network.

We evaluated the structural change of the cathode material Li$$_{2}$$MnO$$_{3}$$ that was deposited as an epitaxial film with an (001) orientation in an all-solid-state battery. In case of the electrode with LiPO$$_{4}$$ coating. Experiments revealed a structural change to a high-capacity (activated) phase that proceeded gradually and continuously with cycling. The activated phase barely showed any capacity fading. We propose a mechanism of structural change with cycling: charging to a high voltage at a sufficiently low Li concentration typically induces irreversible transition to a phase detrimental to cycling that could, but not necessarily, be accompanied by the dissolution of Mn and/or the release of O into the electrolyte, while a gradual irreversible transition to an activated phase happens at a similar Li concentration under a lower voltage.

Development of spin-contrast-variation neutron reflectometry for structural analyses of multilayer films

Hamon, 30(4), p.207 - 211, 2020/11

We developed a technique of spin-contrast-variation neutron reflectivity (SCV-NR) for structural analyses of multilayer films. The SCV-NR curves of the polystyrene monolayer film were precisely reproduced using a common set of structural parameters and neutron scattering length density at each proton polarization. This result ensures that SCV-NR curves are not deformed by inhomogeneous PH due to the spin-diffusion mechanism. The number of structural parameters of the lamellar microphase-separated poly(styrene-block-isoprene) thin film is too large to determine with a single unpolarized reflectivity curve only. However, these parameters converged through the global analysis of the SCV-NR curves. In this manner, SCV-NR determines the structure of multilayer films while excluding the incorrect structural model that accidentally accounts for a single unpolarized reflectivity curve only.

A post-irradiation examination (PIE) was performed on the tensile specimens prepared from the MEGAPIE (MEGAwatt Pilot Experiment) target which were irradiated in flowing lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE). Thicknesses of the specimens were over two times larger than that of the standard specimen. The PIE revealed that the T91 specimens showed a 1.5-2.0 times larger total elongation (TE) compared to the literature values for a specimen with standard t/w (ratio of thickness to width). It could be suggested that the t/w and TE were strongly correlated. Then, we tried to investigate the effects of the t/w on the TE by comparing unirradiated specimens. We found that there was no t/w dependence on the strength and uniform elongation. On the other hand, the TE increases with increasing t/w. Based on the experimental data, we correlated the TE with various specimens t/w to estimate appropriate TE values, including that for the standard specimen.

FAPIG, (196), p.8 - 15, 2020/01

The prototype fast breeder reactor Monju has already started (from June 2017) the unloading operation period (about 5.5 years: until the end of 2022) of the fuel assembly, which is the first stage of decommission. Among them, the first "Processing of fuel assembly" operation (86 in total) was conducted from August 2018 to January 2019 as the first handling of the fuel assembly. Fuji Electric provided technical support, such as dispatching technicians throughout the period, in cooperation with Japan Atomic Energy Agency for the "Processing of fuel assembly" operation, and contributed to the completion of the operation while experiencing various troubles. This manuscript introduces the contents of the first "Processing of fuel assembly" operation and the overview of the trouble status. This manuscript is a sequel to FAPIG No.194 "Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor Monju Decommissioning and Unloading Operation of the Fuel Assembly from the Core", please refer to it.

We developed a technique of spin-contrast-variation neutron reflectometry (SCV-NR). Polarized-neutron reflectivity curves of film samples vary as a function of their proton-polarization P. The P-dependent reflectivity curves of a polystyrene film was precisely reproduced using a common set of structure parameters and the P-dependent neutron scattering length. The reflectivity curve of poly (styrene-block-isoprene) (PSPI) presented a shoulder attributed to holes with the depth corresponding to one period of periodic lamellae on the free surface only at a specific P. In this way, structural information about specific surfaces or interfaces can be obtained by controlling the P.

Development of separation reagent, which can efficiently separate lanthanides, is of increasing importance because it concerns establishment of purification and recycle techniques rare-earth elements. In our research group, several hetero donor type ligands, which have both oxygen and heterocyclic nitrogen atoms as donor atoms, were developed and revealed that this type of ligands show the selective complexation with specific lanthanide. In this paper, we will discuss the lanthaides complexation properties of the hetero donor type ligand containing benzimidazole group as nitrogen donor ($$N$$-methyl-$$N$$-phenyl-2-(1$$H$$-benzimidazol-2-yl)-pyridine-6-carboxamide) based on structural investigation by crystallography.

This paper outlines an advanced procedure involving the chemical Th-U-total Pb isochron method (CHIME) dating of monazite using a field-emission electron probe microanalyzer (FE-EPMA) equipped with spectrometers of 100 mm Rowland circle (R$$_{rm R}$$) radius. The higher count rate of R$$_{rm R}$$ = 100 mm wavelength dispersive spectrometer (WDS) compared to R$$_{rm R}$$ = 140 mm WDS enables measurements to be taken in a shorter time. CHIME dating using R$$_{rm R}$$ = 100 mm WDS had previously been difficult because of lower resolution compared to that of R$$_{rm R}$$ = 140 mm WDS. This problem has been overcome by a new interference correction method using natural monazites.

Nagoya Daigaku Nendai Sokutei Kenkyu, 1, p.36 - 43, 2017/03

We established a CHIME monazite dating method using R$$_{rm R}$$ = 100 mm spectrometers and a provenance analysis method using heavy minerals for the dating and analysis of minerals. CHIME dating has traditionally been performed with conventional R$$_{rm R}$$ = 140 mm spectrometers for measurement of U, Th, and Pb. These spectrometers, however, have low count rates in measurements of Pb. We used a JEOL JXA-8530F FE-EPMA equipped with R$$_{rm R}$$ = 100 mm spectrometers, a system installed at Tono Geoscience Center in 2014, for the CHIME dating of monazite. We corrected the spectral interferences peculiar to R$$_{rm R}$$ = 100 mm spectrometers by the method of AA mli and Griffin (1975) for monazite analyses. We calculated the correction factors by a new interference correction method using natural monazites. We also established a quick quantitative analysis and identification method for heavy minerals using the EPMA.

Development of the prediction technology of cable disconnection of in-core neutron detector for the future high-temperature gas-cooled reactors

Shimazaki, Yosuke; Sawahata, Hiroaki; Kawamoto, Taiki; Suzuki, Hisashi; Shinohara, Masanori; Honda, Yuki; Katsuyama, Kozo; Takada, Shoji; Sawa, Kazuhiro

Journal of Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science, 2(4), p.041008_1 - 041008_5, 2016/10

Maintenance technologies for the reactor system have been developed by using the high-temperature engineering test reactor (HTTR). One of the important purposes of development is to accumulate the experiences and data to satisfy the availability of operation up to 90% by shortening the duration of the periodical maintenance for the future HTGRs by shifting from the time-based maintenance to condition-based maintenance. The technical issue of the maintenance of in-core neutron detector, wide range monitor (WRM), is to predict the malfunction caused by cable disconnection to plan the replacement schedule. This is because that it is difficult to observe directly inside of the WRM in detail. The electrical inspection method was proposed to detect and predict the cable disconnection of the WRM by remote monitoring from outside of the reactor by using the time domain reflectometry and so on. The disconnection position, which was specified by the electrical method, was identified by non-destructive and destructive inspection. The accumulated data is expected to be contributed for advanced maintenance of future HTGRs.

Proceedings of 23rd International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE-23) (DVD-ROM), 5 Pages, 2015/05

A numerical analysis controlling and managing system is implemented on K, which controls the modelling process and data treating, although the manager only controls a structural analysis by finite element method. The modeling process is described by the list of function ID and its procedures in a data base. The manager executes the process by order in the list for simulation procedures. The manager controls the intention of an analysis by changing the analytical process one to another. Experiments were carried out with static and dynamic analyses.
